How to support a depressed partner while maintaining your own mental health | Society | The Guardian
Remember that depression isn’t just a mental illness
It used to drive me mad that Rob wouldn’t get out of bed. It took a while to realise that he “couldn’t” rather than “wouldn’t”. I was so sure he would feel better if he came out for a walk or met his friends, but depression is a physical illness, too. As Dr Cain says: “Physically, depression impacts energy levels. People sometimes feel very tired and want to stay in bed all the time.”

Plugging in through clothing: How children’s clothes influence perception and affective practices in day careThe Sociological Review - Elina Paju, 2017
Through the analysis of everyday practices of wearing clothing, clothes are seen as connectors. They enhance, diminish or expand possibilities for perception, action and affective practices in which children engage, thereby altering the children’s ways of being. The article proposes that the wearing of clothing plays a role in constituting selfhood outside of mere representations.

Mit kleinen Veränderungen bei Ernährung, Bewegung oder Schlaf lassen sich biochemische Prozesse im Körper anstoßen, die die Wahrscheinlichkeit deutlich erhöhen, gesund alt zu werden. Hannah Is a Girl. Doctors Finally Treat Her Like One. - The New York Times
Politicians could learn something from the doctors who treat these patients. Over the past few years, it has become clear that if we support these children in their transgender identities instead of trying to change them, they thrive instead of struggling with anxiety and depression.

Hannah is using a puberty-blocking implant and getting ready to embark on the path of developing a female body by starting estrogen. Ten years ago most doctors would have called this malpractice. New data has now made it the protocol for thousands of American children.

NHS Health Check: Short GP consultations crazy, say GPs - BBC News
Average consultation length is 10 minutes in the UK - thought to be the shortest in the developed world.
GP leaders said this was already too short and the extra workload from the hospital closures proposed by local leaders would destabilise care.
The proposals are being made by local health leaders to "modernise" the NHS.
There are 44 plans in England - many of which involve reducing hospital care and pushing more services into the community to save money and make the NHS more efficient. Similar measures are being taken in the rest of the UK. [...] The RCGP and BMA said they would result in even more complex cases being passed on to GPs once they start being introduced later this year.

Children from the poorest parts of Scotland are more than twice as likely to have concerns recorded about their development.

New figures show more than a quarter (26%) of children from the most deprived areas had at least one developmental concern identified during reviews offered to every child reaching 27 months.

That compares to just one in nine (11%) for children living in the most affluent parts of the country in 2015/16.

For millions with mental health problems, the modern workplace is an insult to body and soul
Our cultural insistence that paid work is the surest route to well-being and dignity has little basis in fact. For many millions of people, the modern workplace is a blunt insult to both body and soul, but we are invited by our bosses and leaders to agree that exhaustion is a sign of weakness and that despair is a mark of moral deficiency. It should not take a spate of suicides for us to begin to question that logic.

NHS in £2.4bn funding boost for GP services in England
NHS chiefs in England have announced a five-year plan to help GP surgeries "get back on their feet" and to improve access for patients.
