Heatwave sees record high temperatures around world this week | Environment | The Guardian
From Europe to Africa, extreme and widespread heat raises climate concerns in hottest La Niña year to date on record [...] Last week, a weather station at Ouargla in Algeria’s Sahara Desert, reported a maximum temperature of 51.3C on 5 July, the highest temperature reliably recorded in Africa.

Even when the sun goes down, night is not providing the cooling relief it once did in many parts of the world. At Quriyat, on the coast of Oman, overnight temperatures remained above 42.6C, which is believed to be the highest “low” temperature ever recorded in the world. Downtown Los Angeles also saw a new monthly July minimum overnight record of 26.1C on 7 July.

Supermarkets must stop using plastic packaging, says former Asda boss | Environment | The Guardian
ocean. peoples sewers. // “We have been able to recycle plastic for decades yet it remains a scourge on the planet. Recycling will never offer a durable solution to the plastic crisis – we simply have to use less plastic in the first place.” [...] Between 5m and 13m tonnes of plastic leaks into the world’s oceans each year to be ingested by sea birds, fish and other organisms, and by 2050 the ocean will contain more plastic by weight than fish, according to research by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

Scientists at Ghent University in Belgium recently calculated people who eat seafood ingest up to 11,000 tiny pieces of plastic every year. Last August, the results of a study by Plymouth University reported plastic was found in a third of UK-caught fish, including cod, haddock, mackerel and shellfish.

Assumed safety of widespread pesticide use is false, says top government scientist | Environment | The Guardian
“The effects of dosing whole landscapes with chemicals have been largely ignored by regulatory systems,” the scientists said. “This can and should be changed.” They contrast this situation with pharmaceuticals, for which there is a system of rigorous global monitoring after a drug is approved in case adverse effects emerge.

“Vigilance on the scale that is required for medicines does not exist to assess the effects of pesticides in the environment,” they said. They cite the UK as an example of one of the most developed regulatory systems: “Yet it has no systematic monitoring of pesticide residues in the environment. There is no consideration of safe pesticide limits at landscape scales.”

Plastic kills – let's stop treating it like a normal part of modern life
The oceans are now so full of man-made detritus that our health is being put at risk too. About a third of fish caught off the coast of the UK now contain traces of plastic. Some plastics contain diethylhexyl phthalate, which is toxic and thought to be carcinogenic. When you bear in mind that British seafood eaters may ingest more than 10,000 pieces of plastic each year, it’s obvious that plastic has been a complete disaster for health.

Plastic from tyres 'major source' of ocean pollution - BBC News
Particles of debris from car tyres are ending up in the ocean as "plastic soup", conservationists warn.
Microplastics from tyres and textiles are a bigger source of marine pollution than the breakdown of larger plastic waste in some areas, says the IUCN.
Up to 30% of plastic released into the oceans each year comes from primary microplastics, not the disintegration of larger pieces, a report found.
Debris from tyre abrasion and synthetic fabrics are the main sources, they say.

We have entered a new era of conflict, warns new book
In his new book, Irregular War (IB Tauris) , he reflects on Isis, al-Qaida, Boko Haram, Al Shabab, and the Taliban - all separate manifestations, he says, of a new non-state dynamic driving international conflict through asymmetric and hybrid warfare. But their significance is more fundamental. They are part of what Rogers calls “an historical shift towards revolts from the margins”. And such revolts are made more likely by “the widening global socio-economic divide and the onset of climate disruption”. [...] The causes of conflict are many and deep – economic, political, societal, environmental, demographic. [...] “the increasing marginalisation of the majority of the world’s people caused by the workings of the neo-liberal system of international economic activity” which concentrates most of the fruits of economic growth in the hands of a transglobal elite of some 1.5bn people.

UK air pollution 'linked to 40,000 early deaths a year' - BBC News
Air pollution is contributing to about 40,000 early deaths a year in the UK, the Royal Colleges of Physicians and Paediatrics and Child Health have said. [...] While the pollutants have changed over time - from coal soot to diesel vehicle emissions - the health risks remain. Tobacco still poses the biggest indoor threat, but wood-burning stoves, spray deodorants, cleaning products, air fresheners and fly spray contribute. Mould and mildew in poorly ventilated rooms can also cause illness. [...] "As NHS costs continue to escalate due to poor public health - asthma alone costs the NHS an estimated £1bn a year - it is essential that policy makers consider the effects of long-term exposure on our children and the public purse," he said. Prof Grigg said the public could also help by: walking, cycling or taking the bus or train instead of driving, when possible keeping gas appliances and solid fuel burners in good repair making homes more energy efficient

Scientists: air pollution led to more than 5.5 million premature deaths in 2013 | Environment | The Guardian
“Air pollution is the fourth-highest risk factor for death globally and by far the leading environmental risk factor for disease,” said Michael Brauer, a researcher from the University of British Columbia. Brauer said air pollution contributed to heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, bronchitis, emphysema and acute infections. He and his colleagues compared the problem in Asia to the conditions under centuries of industrial revolution in the US and Europe: massive economic growth smothered by clouds of toxic matter in the air. [... COAL ...] “Even in the most clean scenario in 2030,” Ma said, China’s growing and ageing population will still suffer 990,000 to 1.3 million deaths a year.

Bolivia's second-largest lake dries up and may be gone forever, lost to climate change | World news | The Guardian
Lake Poopó was officially declared evaporated in December. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people have lost their livelihoods and gone. High on Bolivia’s semi-arid Andean plains at 3,700 metres (more than 12,000 feet) and long subject to climatic whims, the shallow saline lake has essentially dried up before only to rebound to twice the area of Los Angeles. But recovery may no longer be possible, scientists say. “This is a picture of the future of climate change,” says Dirk Hoffman, a German glaciologist who studies how rising temperatures from the burning of fossil fuels has accelerated glacial melting in Bolivia. As Andean glaciers disappear, so do the sources of Poopó’s water. Hawking: Humans at risk of lethal 'own goal' - BBC News
Humanity is at risk from a series of dangers of our own making, according to Prof Stephen Hawking. Nuclear war, global warming and genetically-engineered viruses are among the scenarios which he singles out. And he says that further progress in science and technology will create "new ways things can go wrong". Prof Hawking is giving this year's BBC Reith Lectures, which explore research into black holes, and his warning came in answer to audience questions. He says that assuming humanity eventually establishes colonies on other worlds, it will be able to survive. "Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next thousand or ten thousand years. [...] But he also said that future generations of researchers should be aware of how scientific and technological progress is changing the world, and to help the wider public understand it. //&! bit.ly/1RwS7yA

Texas Fracking Zone Emits 90% More Methane Than EPA Estimated | twice as much as estimated by the Environmental Protection Agency's Greenhouse Gas Inventory, and 5.5 times the number from a separate global database. : science
Texan here. I can say it is getting pretty noticeable in some parts. The I-20 between Pecos and Abilene reeks of gas now. I've lived in Texas for over 20 years and this is the worst it's been. At one point, I had to turn the air off in my car just so the stench would stop flowing in (even the air filter did little to help). But in a bit of uplifting news, Sweetwater, also on the I-20, has installed a ton of wind turbines. So it's good to see that the move the green energy is being made in the state.

The Chemical in Cupcake Wrappers and Cookware Might Be Causing Cancer | Mother Jones
C8 is in a chemical family called PFCs (perfluorinated chemicals)—the same water- and stain-proofing class of chemicals used to make rain gear, pizza box and popcorn bag liners, stainproof upholstery treatments, and those waxy slips that hold pastries at cafes. Dozens of studies have linked PFCs to all sorts of health problems, from kidney and testicular cancer to increased risk of miscarriages. (3M phased out the chemical from production in 2002 due to potential health hazards.) [...] PFC contamination may not be isolated to the Ohio Valley. According to an Environmental Working Group (EWG) report that uses recent EPA data, C8 has been found in the drinking water in 94 counties serving more than 6 million Americans. (An interactive version of this map is available here.) [...] The EPA is in the process of investigating C8's health effects; in the meantime, it has set voluntary C8 safety standards to be used by utility companies. How Soviet pollution destroyed the Aral Sea - BBC News
[ one example. doesn't mean its the last one ] In October 1990 Western scientists confirmed the virtual disappearance of the Aral Sea in Soviet Central Asia, formerly the fourth largest inland sea in the world. The loss of sea water was the result of 60 years of intensive agriculture and pollution by the Soviet authorities. It is considered the biggest manmade loss of water in recorded history. The surrounding areas were devastated. Local fisherman watched as the shore gradually receded and fish stocks ran out. Local children fell victim to respiratory illnesses. Professor Denys Brunsden, of London's King's College, was one of the first Western scientists to visit the Aral Sea in 1990. //&! How humans are driving the sixth mass extinction | Environment | The Guardian
Scientists have been warning for decades that human actions are pushing life on our shared planet toward mass extinction. Such extinction events have occurred five times in the past, but a bold new paper finds that this time would be fundamentally different. Fortunately, there’s still time to stop it.

Scotland's environment in 'serious trouble' - BBC News
The report is a follow up to the 2013 State Of Nature UK-wide report, which warned that 60% of 3,148 species studied had declined in past 50 years, and 31% had declined strongly. More than one in 10 of all species assessed were under threat of disappearing from the UK's shores altogether. [...] "As NGOs, we naturally asked ourselves 'What should be done about that?' "This report seeks to answer that question, and is based on a year's interactive research with a wide range of experts - both in wildlife ecology and in policy development and delivery. "The conclusion is not one of despair, but we must act with urgency to create a common course to save wildlife and the natural environment."

Britain's water crisis | Nick Davies | Environment | The Guardian
The immediate cause of the early drying out at the source of the Ouse was simply that there was not enough water in the underground aquifer on which it feeds. But that turns out to be part of something bigger. In March 2013, the local branch of the Environment Agency reported that, depending on conditions, there are now years when they can extract water from the Ouse on no more than 94 days. For the rest of the year, abstractors can use water that has been stored during the wet months in the big reservoir at Ardingly, and they can pump up water through boreholes sunk into the underground aquifers. This in turn reduces the amount of water that bubbles up into the river and its tributaries. The Environment Agency has stopped issuing new abstraction licences for the river. Meanwhile, during the summer months, nearly half of what we like to describe as a river is, in fact, recycled waste water and sewage. [...] [south-east and south] “serious water stress”

How can plastic bag addiction be cured? - BBC News
From Monday large shops in England will charge 5p for each plastic bag. But how did shoppers get so used to free carrier bags in the first place, asks Chris Stokel-Walker. //&! bit.ly/1RgOTfj - Perhaps the crisis of conscience has eased and people have got used to the idea of their wastefulness again. The charge is clearly needed. But will it work? And does it go far enough? [ 5p isn't a pain, 50p probably. because then its seen (perceived) as overpriced/rip-off. but the consumer does not see, is not aware of the actual current cost and long-term cost to the environment, ecology, and knock-on economic damage of cleaning it up in 20-30 years because we have to to save the planet! where are the behavioural economic experiments when you need them? ] - make video arguing for a 50p price tag and study from dan ariely to conduct such a study.
