YouTube as you know it is about to change dramatically | The Verge
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10139266 // Would you pay to avoid ads on YouTube? [...] According to multiple sources, the world’s largest video-sharing site is preparing to launch its two separate subscription services before the end of 2015 — Music Key, which has been in beta since last November, and another unnamed service targeting YouTube’s premium content creators, which will come with a paywall. Taken together, YouTube will be a mix of free, ad-supported content and premium videos that sit behind a paywall.

Maker Studios May Not Hit Disney Earn-Out Goals | Re/code
The most significant issue for Kreiz and other Maker executives and investors will likely come down to money. There’s no dispute about the fact that Maker has continued to grow under Disney, but it appears that Maker hasn’t hit goals it thought it could clear in May 2014 (I don’t know how the specific earn-out goals are structured). It’s not unusual for acquired companies to miss earn-out goals — it may be more common than not. But at the time of the deal, Maker backers seemed unusually confident about their ability to get all or most of the extra $450 million Disney might pay out. Pando: “Video is an unfair advantage you either join or lose” [SPONSORED]
your Newsfeed in Facebook became 50% video over night, and those videos started to autoplay, grabbing all of your attention. I think the change was dramatic, and it changed social media from being this static journal to something where everything is moving all the time. [...] Video is not even remotely close to photos when it comes to complication, but it’s also 1000 times more powerful. [...] Just to give you an example, consider, autoplay video. It has different requirements. It needs to capture your attention very fast. When we design for autoplay video, how do we create the first few seconds to capture your attention? [ GaryV does edit his videos between YT and FB differently! ] [...] We expect the market will penalize someone who is not prioritizing video. [...] Photos and text are just becoming more and more invisible. // Snacking, Entertainment, Escapeism, - or - Utility (here is a 20% coupon)

It's official: Google blew it with YouTube, and Facebook has caught up | Nicholas Carlson | LinkedIn
"In April, Facebook hit 4 billion views per day, matching the latest estimates available for 10-year-old YouTube." [...] This is a core mission for Facebook. Facebook has become "synonymous with mobile," Facebook ad exec Carolyn Everson says. "I think that the next frontier is becoming synonymous with mobile video." People used to share video from other sites on Facebook. In February, however, "70% of Facebook's videos were uploaded directly," Griffith reports. Griffith: "Complex Media reports average completion rates of 78% for its Facebook videos, which last two to 10 minutes." Facebook has tweaked its News Feed algorithm to favor video, according to one Facebook page owner. If you have a page with a million followers, your photos will reach 14% of your followers, your text-only posts will reach 4%, and your videos will reach 35%.

Author And YouTuber John Green Tells Advertisers To Stop Worrying About Eyeballs | TechCrunch
John Green talked about how he and his brother Hank built a devoted following of “nerdfighters” on YouTube, contributing to the enormous success of his book. In fact, they’ve built an online video business with 30 employees. But Green’s ad revenue is outweighed by things like crowdfunding and merchandise — and that ad revenue is falling by 5 percent every year. He acknowledged that’s not true for everyone on YouTube. Nonetheless, he argued, “Many of the strongest communities are dramatically undervalued by advertisers, forcing YouTubers to find other paths.” [...] And sure, distraction is fine, but Green doesn’t see himself and other “passionate YouTubers” as being in “the distraction business.” Instead, the best shows are in “the community business,” and he watches them because they help him “grapple with and consider the problems and questions way down deep there in the darkness. [...] focusing on eyeballs is a crummy way to measure the success and value [...] eyeball biz shrinking!
