Italien: Rechtsradikale Gruppen wie Casa Pound wachsen - SPIEGEL ONLINE
From Spain to Turkey, the rise of the far right is a clash of cultures not civilisations
Elif Shafak
Vox and other extremists are making huge political gains for the first time in years. Their success risks tearing societies apart
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/may/06/spain-turkey-far-right-vox-culture-war
What Vox is selling is strikingly similar to the package embraced by populist nationalists elsewhere: anti-immigration, anti-diversity, anti-gay marriage and LGBT rights, an aggressive longing for a mythical golden past. The Catalan conflict has played into Vox’s hands – as through history, one type of “benign” nationalism has dangerously inflamed another to stoke a vicious conflict. Populist nationalists love imaginary enemies, and Vox is no exception. Misogyny lies at its heart. Talk that men are suffering at the hands of “feminazis”, and that radical feminists are threatening the social fabric, will be familiar to watchers of the far right. They don’t believe that patriarchy exists, just as they don’t believe climate change is happening. Coming from Turkey, the misogynist rhetoric of the Spanish movement is horribly familiar to me. Just like the Justice and Development party (AKP) in Turkey, Vox wants to convert the current gender ministry into a ministry of family. The shift in words is significant. Rather than looking at gender discrimination and institutional gender disparity, the new focus is on “traditional family values”. Until recently Spain was regarded as one of the few countries that had made huge gains in gender equality. Now we know that even in such countries history can go backwards.

End austerity – and kickstart Martin Luther King’s revolution of values | Richard Kozul-Wright | Opinion | The Guardian
Hyperglobalisation has concentrated massive wealth in a few hands, boosting the cult of materialism that the great civil rights campaigner warned us about // Byung-Chul Han // The real threat now is to the underlying trust, cohesion and sense of fairness that markets depend upon in order to function effectively. Against this, insisting that “there is no alternative” is yesterday’s political slogan. People everywhere desire much the same thing: a decent job, a secure home, a safe environment, a better future for their children and a government that listens and responds to their concerns. They want a different deal from that offered by hyperglobalisation. Prosperity for all cannot be delivered by austerity-minded politicians, rent-seeking corporations and speculative bankers. What is urgently needed now is a global new deal. Three elements – recovery, regulation and redistribution – remain at the heart of any such deal. Book Richard Kozul-Wright is director of the globalisation and development strategies division in the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Its annual report, Beyond Austerity: Towards a Global New Deal, is published today

Connie Fisher on Make-Up
evolutionary psychology explanation: in more patriarchal societies, women wear less make-up (middle east v western world) make-up is a signal of equality. why do women wear make-up? "women have to show sexiness (attractiveness) to signal fertility. [...] subconscious natural selection." // industry worker "a treat, feeling good that rather looking good." // art, and can look like a different person // study showed that people prefer no-make-up make-up look. // advertising and marketing is positioning and spin it that it is seen in a feminist way along the way of 'you made the decision, you made yourself look better, ...' rarely do we judge men by their look ... ie rob ford toronto mayor, or chris christie. // Selfie has become a culture/pop culture phenomenon. bare face selfie is seen now as courageous! #trend - bare face is so alien to our make-up (look your best) norm/cultural norm! // putting on make-up and nice outfit (shopping, treat) can become coping mechanism against stress.

Mobbing-Klage gegen Nestlé: Unappetitliche Einblicke - SPIEGEL ONLINE
Fake Cover Letters Expose Discrimination Against Disabled - The New York Times
Employers appear to discriminate against well-qualified job candidates who have a disability. [...] Experienced workers are also more likely to interact with clients on a regular basis. Regardless of whether these concerns are legitimate, said Dr. Schur, “employers see these people as riskier.” The researchers found that the decline in interest in disabled workers was roughly the same whether the disability was a spinal cord injury or Asperger’s.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai Brings in Less Egotistical Leadership | Re/code
“In leadership at Google, you have to be three-plus standard deviations better than normal in technical ability,” said Bowden, an equity partner at Data Collective who spent eight years at the search giant. That is, Google’s top execs stand well above the average software engineer in skill. That trait, Bowden continued, does not often correlate with an above-average “emotional intelligence” — a capacity for empathy. The savants usually aren’t people persons, said Bowden. Translation: They can be complete jerks. “Sundar,” Bowden added, “is a rare example.” [...] A former Google exec put it less charitably: “All the assholes have left.”

Land degradation costs the world up to $10.6tn a year, report says | Global development | The Guardian
More than half of the world’s arable land is moderately or severely degraded, according to a report published on Tuesday by the Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Initiative (pdf). The report estimates the cost of this environmental destruction, not only from lost agricultural production and diminished livelihoods, but also from the lost value of ecosystem services formerly provided by the land, including water filtration, erosion prevention, nutrient cycling and the provision of clean air. [...] “We should look at realigning the incentive structure that we have away from incentives that degrade the land to those that promote sustainable management,” [...] reduction in biodiversity, ecosystems, and ecosystem services.”

VW crisis won't put brakes on global goals - BBC News
Whatever motoring analogy you pick, the assumption so far has been that Volkswagen would deal with the biggest crisis in its history by taking its ambitions down a notch. But contrary to expectations, VW's new leadership says the company is instead putting its foot down. One analysis of the root cause of Volkswagen's emissions-rigging scandal is that the company just got too big, too ambitious and too greedy. VW was so determined to beat Toyota at all costs, goes the theory, that it was willing to cut corners. In a bid to crack the US market, pressure was reportedly piled on employees to achieve the holy grail of a diesel car which was low on both toxic emissions and fuel consumption - all the while staying unfeasibly powerful.

[<< Symptom of being a conglomerate! Corporate Culture & Values.] min 38:09 - Is hardware, software & even has to do something with the fuel tank. In some models (gen 2) its just software & a sensor. // 49:20 - framing of the answer with EPA (influenced?), cars on the road right now, even they are not passing emissions test, "are legal & safe to drive for the owners." // min 57 NOx, air pollution. "we will find other manufactures that installed defeat devices." // lax regulation and regulators, conflict of interest (partially financed by car manufacturers) with European Regulator/Test Center. // EU manufacturers focused R&D on Diesel. Volkswagen US boss told about emission cheat in 2014 - BBC News
Michael Horn said he was told about a "possible emissions non-compliance" in the spring of 2014. The revelation was made in testimony due to be presented to a committee of the US House of Representatives investigating the scandal on Thursday . He said he was told after a study by West Virginia University was published. "I was informed that EPA [Environmental Protection Agency] regulations included various penalties for non-compliance with the emissions standards and that the agencies can conduct engineering tests which could include 'defeat device' testing or analysis," he said. "I was also informed that the company engineers would work with the agencies to resolve the issue." Mr Horn said in the written evidence it was not until 3 September this year that Volkswagen told US authorities about the "defeat device" in emissions software in diesel vehicles for the model years 2009 to 2015. [...] "Responsible parties will be identified and held accountable," Mr Horn said.

Firm 'hides' university when recruits apply - BBC News
There will be a "university-blind" approach to selection, so that the name of the university attended will not be known. The aim is to find students with "potential" and to prevent the recruitment process producing an intake from a narrow range of universities and social backgrounds. "Improving social mobility is one of the UK's biggest challenges," said David Sproul, senior partner and chief executive of Deloitte UK. But Mr Sproul said there was also a "business imperative", as firms needed "to hire people who think and innovate differently, come from a variety of backgrounds and bring a range of perspectives". The move by Deloitte is the latest in a wave of changes by graduate recruiters wanting to look beyond academic results.

VW lost the plot. But that’s the danger when business lacks social moorings | Will Hutton | Comment is free | The Guardian
VW’s existential crisis has revealed the weaknesses inherent in western economies. Change must now happen [...] Despite a vast R and D budget, VW is far from a leader in the electrical car or hybrid market. Mr Winterkorn’s bonuses were based on his capacity to deliver production, jobs and profits: environmental sustainability or engaging with wider stakeholders did not get a look-in. [...] Capitalism, in short, may have boundless creative and innovative energy – but it also has boundless ways to go wrong. Intriguingly, recent work by a group of researchers at Harvard and the London Business School compared 90 American companies that took sustainability seriously with 90 who did not. Over 18 years the 90 committed to sustainability delivered annual financial returns 4.8% higher than the other 90.

Volkswagen's Scandal is Libor on Wheels - Bloomberg View
There's never just one cockroach. That's what we learned from the market-rigging scandals in recent years. Why going home from work on time is good for you – and your employer | News | The Guardian
There is a lot of evidence that the number of hours worked does not equate to how much you are getting done. With the OECD countries above, there is a statistically significant negative relationship between the average hours worked and the amount of money made per hour worked. In other words, the countries with longer working hours tend to have less economically productive workers. In Japan, several firms including the operators of clothing retailer Uniqlo are moving to cut the number of hours employees work. So don’t feel bad about clocking off on time – you might actually get more done.

The more you pursue happiness, the faster it runs from you | Zach Stafford | Comment is free | The Guardian
Psychologist Iris Mauss at the University of California, Berkley found that the pursuit of happiness might just leave you worse off. “Wanting to be happy can make you less happy,” said Mauss in an interview with livescience.com. “If you explicitly and purposely focus on happiness, that appears to have a self-defeating quality.” [...] In her studies, participants who were not happy would begin blaming themselves for feeling sad. They thought it was an immediate flag for their failure, making these negative feelings even more counter-productive. The people who accepted these negative feelings as normal, however, were much happier in the long run. So, accepting your sadness could actually make you feel good. [...] For Darwin, emotions were very much tied to surviving, which requires more than just happiness. The Myth of Valley DoucheBaggery - John Battelle's Search Blog
But I think our industry culture is moving far faster than the writers at Silicon Valley might wish to believe. I think we’re seeing the rise of a new culture, one that rejects arrogance and the founder worship which breeds it. But by and large, the teams making companies like Slack, LiveRamp, Medium, Earnest, MetroMile, Lyft, Okta, Pinterest, and hundreds more are damn fine people, and they are dedicating their lives to making something that creates positive change – a product or service that makes the world a better place (even if it’s in a small way). Alex Gibney’s New Documentary Paints An Ambivalent Portrait Of Steve Jobs | TechCrunch
It opens with footage of the mass outpouring of grief after Jobs’ death in 2011, and the rest of the movie asks: Why did people feel so much attachment to the CEO of an enormous tech company? And is Jobs really worthy of such admiration? Gibney isn’t trying to convince people that they should stop buying Apple products — after all, he’s still got that iPhone. Instead the aim is to raise questions about Jobs’ values and the influence those values had on the rest of Silicon Valley (where Gibney often sees a similar “rough-and-tumble libertarian vibe”). Nothing we know [ about X ] should be assumed to be true. // Technology is the product of the culture that builds it. // If you want to build for the long term, the only guarantee is change. UK seems to relax pressure on Caymans over company register | US news | The Guardian
The UK government appears to have relaxed its pressure on the Cayman Islands to create a register of company ownership, despite David Cameron’s plea last year for overseas territories to do so in the interests of tax transparency. The prime minister promised to introduce a public register of beneficial ownership in the UK and wrote to the overseas territories last year urging them to consider doing the same, arguing that public access to a central list is “vital to meeting the urgent challenges of illicit finance and tax evasion”. However, the Cayman Islands is one of several offshore territories – including the British Virgin Islands and Bermuda – that are refusing to implement the idea after consultation. // sanctions for the vulnerable, disabled, sick, deprived, in poverty going to the food bank without hot water or electricity. but no sanctions for Amazon, Starbucks, Vodafone, Boots, and Co. ... tending to those that donate and go out to vote.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer's minimal maternity leave plan prompts dismay | Technology | The Guardian
When she had her son in September 2012, she took two weeks of paid maternity leave, a fraction of what the company allowed. Eight months later and three months after banning telecommuting, Mayer announced more generous maternity benefits at Yahoo. The company doubled maternity leave and now offers new mothers 16 weeks of paid time off. Fathers are offered eight weeks of paid paternity leave. Both parents can take eight weeks in the case of adoption, fostering or surrogacy. [...] There is speculation as to whether another famous technology chief – Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook – will take his company allowance of paternity leave. [...] “Mayer’s announcement is disappointing,” said Anne Weisberg, senior vice-president of the Families and Work Institute in New York. “She’s a role model and I think she should take whatever Yahoo’s parental leave is – the mark of a great leader is that they have a strong team and don’t need to be there all the time themselves. &! vs bit.ly/1VGGunZ

[...] Der eigentliche Skandal sind die Logistikzentren

What to Make of Amazon's Work Practices? | Bothsides of the Table
It’s best encapsulated in a famous Jeff Bezos quote, “You can work long, hard or smart, but at Amazon.com you can’t choose two out of three,” [...] Try working at Goldman Sachs, [...] You think it’s different at any of the top consulting firms? [...] You see organizations like these thrive on large pools of some of the country’s best and brightest graduates that trade off 2-5 years of work experience under extreme pressure in exchange for skills, experiences & relationships that will last a lifetime. [Accelerated Learning] [...] Think its a cake walk working @ any of the countries top law firms? [...] Should we do an article on what it’s like to be a medical resident? How abt working in the US military? Chief of Staff for a major political figure? What abt a top athlete in the NFL or NBA or even part of the coaching staff. Think they dont have work/life balance challenges in a field theyve chosen to work in? [#Top 100 of X vs avg white- or blue-collar worker ] [what u optimize for?]

Amazon's Culture: Toxic or Just Tough? by The Jay & Farhad Show
Hello! This week, Farhad Manjoo (New York Times) and Jay Yarow (Business Insider) are joined by special guest Jodi Kantor (New York Times) to discuss her polarizing article about Amazon's culture. // // how technology functions in the workplace - efficiency, quantified self << the feedback tool you can always use, what ever your state of emotion, gripe, stick, bias, prejudice, ... feudal Darwinism creeps into knowledge worker, white-collar and blue-collar workers, MBA's and PhD's. [...] brutal years are NOT Tour of Duty - Reid Hoffman The Alliance. // PS: Reed Hastings (Netflix) Culture document transpires that it is expected to contribute, even if it doesn't spell it out. Netflix also had to fight and overcome as much as Amazon! Proves again that internal & external environment a company finds itself affects its values & culture inevitable [Thesis].

[ AMAZON's culture ] by USA TODAY Tech (podcast)
Amazon, Silicon Valley, Unicorns and Decacorns - go go go even for broke. making things happen. winning the category. // vs Google and Facebook are those that won sort of automatically and had not that much internal and external pressure growing up. had not to fight surviving dot.com crash. Facebook sort of became a self-runner despite of its many missteps. Amazon had to fight all the way, and still has to fight because now it faces antitrust on both sides of the Atlantic. That creates, inadvertently, a specific culture that has been cited by personal examples in the NYT piece.

Darwinism At Your Doorstep: Why You Only Care About Amazon Now | TechCrunch
“You either fit here or you don’t,” and that in Seattle the company has a widespread reputation for its toughness. For now, you have a choice whether to work for Amazon. For now, you have options. Amazon is the vanguard of a very scary movement in the tech sector but we’re not all there yet (though some techbros on Twitter seem happy at the thought of Amazon culture catching on). [...] Why do we care suddenly about working conditions when it turns out that white-collar employees are the ones getting shafted? The workers at Amazon fulfillment centers have much less choice and much less power than the marketers and engineers in the Times piece. [...] We’re acting shocked and horrified that Amazon applies what it calls “purposeful Darwinism” to people with MBAs and PhDs, // [ trend, conditions known in service sector job and manual labour sector swapping over into the cushy world of blue-/white-collar worker ] Capitalism regresses toward feudalism.
