Committee warns of decline in Scottish employment standards - BBC News
[ always announcing new jobs created #, but not the wage ] Members said there had been a "decline in job quality" in recent years, with an increase in low-paid zero-hours contract jobs since the 2008 recession. Their report said public money could be better used to support workers. The committee heard evidence from scores of organisations and took submissions from more than 600 people. Convener Murdo Fraser said the evidence from firms and workers suggested there had been a decline in job quality and an increase in low-paid jobs on "exploitative" zero-hours contracts in recent years. He said: "Whilst employment statistics point to an increase to those in work, if we look beyond the figures, we have uncovered a worrying trend in poor quality employment. [...] "We heard during our inquiry that poor quality work has a significant impact on people's health and wellbeing.

Laurie Anderson: 'Capitalism is a disaster for human relations' | Film | The Guardian
The experimental artist and director talks about her new film, The Heart of a Dog, the trouble with social media – and coming to terms with death [...] But if your brand is just you, is that uncomfortable? Extremely. It’s even worse to market your style. It’s truly sad. And everyone on Facebook has the same sort of marketing ploy selling their image. What does that do to people? It’s extremely brutalising that you’re going to be for sale. It’s one of the worst things you can possibly imagine. Go to any party and you see that: I just don’t think you’re worth talking to. Someone else has a bigger plus sign over their heads. Capitalism is an absolute disaster for human relations. // social isolation, deprivation, Perspektivlosigkeit, Free Will, Dopamine, mobile homescreen, social alienation,

Go tell the boss: let me work less and I’ll produce more | Life and style | The Guardian
The five-day work week is an artificial and outmoded idea. A shorter working week can boost efficiency and an employee’s happiness [...] The latest trend might have more going for it, though: more tech businesses are experimenting with four-day weeks. As Ryan Carson, co-founder of the education startup Treehouse, put it: “You get all day Friday off, instead of pretending like you’re working when you’re not.” [...] The most important reason to work fewer days, of course, is that it’s good for families, friendship, hobbies and the human spirit. But the most interesting implication of the current experiments, backed by some academic research, is that it appears to be good for productivity and work quality, too. Partly that’s because desk-based “knowledge work” relies on plenty of brain rest as well as exertion.

intrinsic motivation, fairness, social animal - social comparison (is encoded into the brain) - status anxiety // self-interest mostly wins over ethics/moral values? // trust between principle & agent // org structure and inventive - ie bonus variable attracts more selfish people and risk takers // justice and fairness is critically important - not only in orgs but also democracies //&! Natural rate theory (equilibrium) - service sector jobs (unskilled manual labour jobs) w minimum wage and not higher. and flexible wages with no minimum wage (USA) create working poor/inequality. institutional change - economists are not just analysts they also affect policy makers (think tanks). // austerity hurts equality/social mobility = economic long-run damage to potential (thus output gap and productivity loss) - lack of supply of able workforce to create added value products & services. trickle-down not helping. //&! tax code unfair, lower capital gains tax than on earned (labour) income

If People Understood This One Thing, We Would Have Revolution Overnight - YouTube
Martin Luther King, Jr. was working towards a guaranteed basic income for all when he was killed. Wealth inequality, neoliberalism, the actions of the Federal Reserve, along with the greed and theft of the global elite have made the call for a guaranteed basic income for all even more urgent in 2014 than in the 1960s. [...] In his new book, The Economics of Revolution, DeGraw writes: “Having that much wealth consolidated within a mere 1% of the population, while a record number of people toil in poverty and debt, is a crime against humanity. For example, it would only cost 0.5% of the 1%’s wealth to eliminate poverty nationwide. Also consider that at least 40% of the 1%’s accounted for wealth is sitting idle. That’s an astonishing $13 trillion in wealth hoarded away, unused.” In this clip from the full 30-minute interview, DeGraw points out that the Federal Reserve is already printing money and giving it away to the financial elite.
