Currently 39 per cent of the working age population in Scotland has at least one long-term condition, but that is forecast to surge as the population ages and Scotland grapples with the fallout of an obesity epidemic.

93% Of All Jobs "Created" Since 2008 Were Added Through The Birth/Death Model | Zero Hedge
Here are the details of how over 90% of the jobs created in the past decade were nothing more than a "statistical" adjustment in some BLS model. [...] Furthermore, self-employed persons as a percentage of the working age population and the number of jobs created by establishments less than one year old are also declining. [...] the multi-decade slowdown in new business formation. Further supporting the Harvard study findings, a Brookings Institution paper called “Declining business dynamism in the United States: a look at states and metros” shows that business formations slowed down and business deaths accelerated after the crisis of 2008 (below to the right). (( THE LOW HANGING FRUITS OF INNOVATION HAVE BEEN PLUCKED! + ECON WINNER TAKES ALL = COMPETITION ON PRICE )) [...] The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) seems to be alone in its belief that the entrepreneurial environment in the US is improving. We believe that the BLS has been artificially inflating the monthly payroll numbers via the birth and death adjustment. This overstatement is not trivial in nature – the adjustment added 30% of all jobs reported since 2010.

Researchers have answered a big question about the decline of the middle class - The Washington Post
“This idea that we’re having this progression of increasing incomes over time — I think that might be true for the upper regions of the income distribution but not for the median,” said Nathaniel Hendren, a Harvard University economist who was not involved in the study. [...] The implication, Guvenen argues, is that economists should search for explanations for households’ current financial woes in the youth and childhood of today’s workers.

“We are maybe looking at the wrong place for the solution to stagnation in wages and rising inequalities,” Guvenen said. “To understand higher inequality, we should turn and take a closer look at youth.” /// &! one comment https://redd.it/69zf27 said part to do w competition. if you don't work for that money, others will. labour pool available for some kind of work. already applicable in the auto industry in usa uk and germany.

Donald Trump, Marine Le Pen: Wie Wirtschaftskrisen Populisten helfen - Kolumne - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Can Emmanuel Macron solve France's economic riddle? | Larry Elliott | Business | The Guardian
Seen from this perspective, Macron does not offer radical centrism but more of the same. By seeing France’s problems as stemming from a lack of supply-side reform rather than from a shortage of demand, he is setting himself up to fail. The difference is that if Macron fails to deliver on his promises, the Front National will be able to mount an even stronger challenge for the presidency in 2022 than it has this time. That’s why the stakes for Macron are so high.

Where did all the GCSE pupils go – and why has no one noticed? | Education | The Guardian
[ underachieving taking pupils off roll to boost class/school rating! League Table. unintended consequences! macro over micro + staff shortage, pressure, not money, less money! making the short cut to let underachievers and trouble makers go. classic american school dropout. in childhood already left behind! ] Earlier this month, Sean Harford, Ofsted’s national director, said that from now on inspectors should question headteachers during inspections when large numbers of students have left. And Amanda Spielman, the chief inspector, described “off-rolling”, alongside other results-boosting methods, as a scandal.

Our investigation shows that even though the inspectorate recognised this as a national problem going back to 2010, it has not done anything about it.

The research organisation Education Datalab recently published reports on pupils leaving their secondary schools, following an investigation by Education Guardian in 2014. It raised concerns that 20,000 pupils were being lost to state education altogether, with no one knowing where they had gone. The reports do not show whether pupils were encouraged to move or left of their own volition. Those who had disappeared were mostly lower achievers.

Head teachers take school funding anxieties to Twitter - BBC News
Head teachers and their staff have taken to Twitter to highlight what may have to be axed in schools in England because of budget cuts.
There have been more than 27,000 tweets using the hashtag #whatwouldyoucut since the campaign against the cuts started on Sunday.
The government insists school investment is at a record £40bn.
But the Association of School and College Leaders said this was only because pupil numbers are rising.
It argued that head teachers are having to make tough decisions about which services to cut.
The tweets included photographs of science experiments, school trips, sporting activities and performing arts events.

UK faces return to inequality of Thatcher years, says report | Business | The Guardian
Pressure on the government to help struggling Britons has intensified after a leading thinktank warned that falling living standards for the poor threatened the biggest rise in inequality since Margaret Thatcher was prime minister.

The Resolution Foundation said Theresa May would need to make good on her pledge to support “just about managing” households as it released a report showing that rising inflation and an end to recent strong jobs growth would hit the least well-off hardest.

The clearest example is competition from foreign workers, which really has slammed the American working class. Economists David Autor, David Dorn, and Gordon Hanson did very careful empirical work and found that competition from China lowered wages and increased unemployment for American workers who were in competition with Chinese imports. Economists Michael Elsby, Bart Hobijn, and Aysegul Sahin found that competition from developing countries—not the decline of unions or the rise of automation—has been responsible for the bulk of the recent decline in labor’s share of income in the United States.

When robots take jobs, workers deserve compensation
In a recent FT blog post, the economist Gavyn Davies concluded economics urgently needed to catch up with that runaway politics. “How to compensate the losers from globalisation will be the big story in macro in 2017,” he wrote.

Some economists argue the simplest and most radical solution would be to provide all citizens with a universal basic income, a guaranteed state handout paid to everyone, irrespective of work, wealth, or social contribution.

We need to talk about towns - Top Stories - The New European
[ Globalisation and neoliberalism crony capitalism and austerity] has wreaked a huge price on the working class here, [the fly-over country]. The shift of manufacturing jobs to cheaper parts of the world decimated once self-sufficient industrial communities. The jobs that came to replace them were often low paid, precarious and seen as emasculating by a generation of men raised on tales of life in the pits and the steel mills. [ but past jobs wont come back and technology will take even more away! Thus the promise of Brexit and co is worth nothing in 10 years, when technological unemployment rules the headlines, not immigration ]

Gig economy threatens government finances, says May adviser | Business | The Guardian
“There is no question that the growth of self-employment and incorporation is having a significant impact on our revenues.” It is not known how many of the UK’s 4.7m self-employed workers are engaged in work that could also be classed as employment, but if only 10% were, that could imply an annual loss to the exchequer of close to £1bn, according to the Guardian’s estimate.

The exchequer does not receive employer national insurance contributions on behalf of self-employed workers. [...] Writing in the Guardian, Taylor says Britain’s employment system “has weaknesses and is not future-proof”

The battle over Uber and driverless cars is really a debate about the future of humanity | Paul Mason | Opinion | The Guardian
Because soon there won’t need to be drivers at all. Given that there are 400,000 HGV drivers in the UK, that at least a quarter of Britain’s 2.5 million van drivers are couriers, and that there are 297,000 licensed taxi drivers – that is a big dent in male employment.

The most important question facing us is not whether Uber drivers should have employment rights (they should), but what to do in a world where automation begins to eradicate work. If we accept – as Oxford researchers Carl Frey and Michael Osborne stated in 2013 – that 47% of jobs are susceptible to automation, the most obvious problem is: how are people going to live?

A new syllabus | The Economist
Mrs May’s plan to increase academic selection would probably boost the number of high achievers. But it would not be “regardless of their background”: most would be from well-off families and if many schools opted for entrance exams, poor children would be harmed. A less flashy policy brought in by her predecessor, David Cameron, might raise standards more widely. Schools will no longer be rated according to the share of pupils achieving five C grades in exams taken at age 16 (which encouraged them to focus on the middle of the ability range) but on the share who do as well as expected given their ability on entry. That will promote high achievement—in every school.

A giant problem | The Economist
As our special report this week makes clear, the superstars are admirable in many ways. They churn out products that improve consumers’ lives, from smarter smartphones to sharper televisions. They provide Americans and Europeans with an estimated $280 billion-worth of “free” services—such as search or directions—a year. But they have two big faults. They are squashing competition, and they are using the darker arts of management to stay ahead. Neither is easy to solve. But failing to do so risks a backlash which will be bad for everyone. [...] The world needs a healthy dose of competition to keep today’s giants on their toes and to give those in their shadow a chance to grow.

For millions with mental health problems, the modern workplace is an insult to body and soul
Our cultural insistence that paid work is the surest route to well-being and dignity has little basis in fact. For many millions of people, the modern workplace is a blunt insult to both body and soul, but we are invited by our bosses and leaders to agree that exhaustion is a sign of weakness and that despair is a mark of moral deficiency. It should not take a spate of suicides for us to begin to question that logic.
