Hillary Clinton's book has a clear message: don't blame me | Thomas Frank | Opinion | The Guardian
She seems to have been almost totally unprepared for the outburst of populist anger that characterized 2016, an outburst that came under half a dozen different guises: trade, outsourcing, immigration, opiates, deindustrialization, and the recent spectacle of Wall Street criminals getting bailed out. It wasn’t the issues that mattered so much as the outrage, and Donald Trump put himself in front of it. Clinton couldn’t. [...] But by and large, Clinton’s efforts to understand populism always get short-circuited, probably because taking it seriously might lead one to conclude that working people have a legitimate beef with her and the Democratic party. &! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-41244474 &! https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/sep/12/hillary-clinton-supporters-memoir-book

Government Faces Labour Questions Over Universal Credit Risks
documents obtained under freedom of information showed a risk of fraudulent activity and cyberattacks. [...] It was finally disclosed this month by the department after a freedom of information request by John Slater, a former IT project manager, and Tony Collins, an investigative journalist, following a four-year legal battle. [...] The documents, which date from 2012, contain a line in which parts of the project are described as “pushing above the programme funding envelope”. They also raise concerns that the programme lacks a “robust framework of assurances”, which means “rework” may be needed if elements of the project are “not fit for purpose”. Fears over staffing are described, with concerns over “skilled staff resources not in the right place at the right time”. Council tried to cover up failings after Poppi Worthington's death | UK news | The Guardian
A local authority criticised for failing to protect Poppi Worthington’s siblings for almost a year after her death did not discipline social workers and instead applied for a draconian order in an attempt to cover-up the failings, documents show. Thirteen-month-old Poppi died after she was found with serious injuries at her home in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, three years ago. A high court family judge concluded that Poppi’s father, Paul Worthington, sexually assaulted her shortly before her death and she died as a result of the injuries she suffered during the assault. It has been revealed that her siblings were not taken into care until after their parents were arrested in August 2013.

Freedom of Information charges ruled out after review - BBC News
'Deep suspicion' The government has chosen not to legislate to shore up ministers' powers to veto the release of information. BBC political correspondent Ross Hawkins says campaigners, opposition politicians and many journalists regarded the independent review of FOI legislation with deep suspicion, concerned the government wanted to curtail a law that allowed them to reveal embarrassing facts about its failings. Some regular users of the law remain anxious about whether it will be easier for institutions to rule that information requests are too burdensome to be met, he says.

EU referendum: Hammond defends rules on access to papers - BBC News
Five cabinet ministers and a minister who attends cabinet are campaigning for Brexit Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has defended plans to prevent ministers who oppose EU membership from seeing certain government documents. He said the government, which backs EU membership, was not neutral and those who disagreed could draw on specific policy information from other sources. MPs are to question the UK's top civil servant after he issued guidance to withhold "referendum-related" material. One anti-EU minister said retaining documents "can't possibly happen". The government's official policy is that Britain should remain in the EU - and civil servants are duty-bound to support government policies. [...] And farming minister George Eustice said ministers needed "100% access" to material relating to day-day dealings with the EU.

Hitachi boss issues warning over Wylfa subsidy deal - BBC News
[ giving extortionate (for consumer) strike prices, while cutting renewable feed in tariff 95% and 500m subsidies for Oil/Aberdeen ] The head of the company behind a new £8bn nuclear power station on Anglesey has warned it may walk away from the project if a subsidy deal with the UK government cannot be reached. Hitachi chairman Hiroaki Nakanishi told the Telegraph he voiced concerns about Wylfa Newydd's expected cost to Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond. It followed problems a rival faced for the Hinkley Point plant in Somerset. The UK government said it wants low-cost nuclear power. Hitachi owns Horizon Nuclear Power which is behind the plans to build the new power plant, which could be operational by the early 2020s. Horizon is in talks with the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) on issues such as the strike price, which will be key to attracting additional finance.

Even Tory MPs are troubled by their party’s power grab
Since their victory, the Conservatives have introduced a battery of measures to weaken the opposition and reduce accountability. [...] It is not only within parliament that the government is seeking to limit accountability. Ministers are expected to weaken the Freedom of Information Act by introducing new exemptions and charging for requests. “I’m unsurprised that both [Tony] Blair and this government viewed it as an inconvenience,” Davis told me. “The trouble is, they’re forgetting who their bosses are.” The Lobbying Act, or “gagging bill”, has reduced the maximum amount that voluntary groups and trade unions can spend on political campaigning in the period before a general election by 60 per cent.

The blame for distorting our view of women doesn’t lie just with advertisers | Lucy Mangan | Comment is free | The Guardian
If we objected strongly enough to warped views of female bodies, women would take our custom elsewhere. But we keep buying the brands that offend us [...] But the lack of change in this area suggests consumers are not changing their spending habits. And as most of the consumers of the brands and products these advertisers are selling to are women purporting to hate this kind of thing, we have a conundrum: why are we still doing this? Why aren’t we putting our money where our mouths are? And then, obviously, in further solidarity taking our mouths off for a pizza somewhere? [...] Asking, or compelling by legislation, advertisers to do this runs counter to almost every prevailing ideology and trend. It asks that moneymaking ventures act for the greater good instead of the bottom line. It asks government to chip away at a cornerstone of the free market. It conceptualises women as hapless victims of intangible forces.

Working-class Americans feel screwed. I heard it across the entire country | US news | The Guardian
Donald Trump has exposed the opportunity gulf between those who make policy and those who live it – turning immigrants into scapegoats in the process [...] The disappointment, although often wrapped in anger over immigration, is at its core about diminished opportunity. It is consistent with the economic reality that has persisted over the last three decades: except for the very rich, Americans haven’t seen their wealth increase. The people I talked to are not entirely wrong; their particular job prospects and their particular wealth have been harmed. [...] The angry are mostly people who work with their hands, who feel stuck in a vise tightening from two sides: there is a greater number of people looking for the same jobs and there are fewer jobs available, since many of these jobs having moved overseas.

Brighton and Hove initiative tackles sugar addiction - BBC News
The "devastating harm" caused by having too much sugar is the focus of Brighton and Hove's first city-wide campaign as part of a drive to help reduce obesity. More than 300 children were admitted to hospital for teeth extraction in the city in 2012-13, while treating diet-related diseases costs £80m a year. The Sugar Smart City initiative has the backing of TV chef Jamie Oliver. He has asked food outlets in the city to adopt a voluntary 10p sugar levy on soft drinks with added sugar. The food campaigner has recently launched a voluntary levy on sugary drinks in his own restaurants, with the money raised going to Sustain, a charity working in health and food education. The money raised elsewhere in the city from the charge will be paid into the Children's Health Fund. Statistics have shown that one in four children in Brighton and Hove are already overweight or obese by the time they leave primary school. [...] "We don't know where it is [...]"
