Bye, Thigh Gap. [Hi] Thighbrows. [ superficial world that Social Media created.

The blame for distorting our view of women doesn’t lie just with advertisers | Lucy Mangan | Comment is free | The Guardian
If we objected strongly enough to warped views of female bodies, women would take our custom elsewhere. But we keep buying the brands that offend us [...] But the lack of change in this area suggests consumers are not changing their spending habits. And as most of the consumers of the brands and products these advertisers are selling to are women purporting to hate this kind of thing, we have a conundrum: why are we still doing this? Why aren’t we putting our money where our mouths are? And then, obviously, in further solidarity taking our mouths off for a pizza somewhere? [...] Asking, or compelling by legislation, advertisers to do this runs counter to almost every prevailing ideology and trend. It asks that moneymaking ventures act for the greater good instead of the bottom line. It asks government to chip away at a cornerstone of the free market. It conceptualises women as hapless victims of intangible forces.

For These Millennials, Gender Norms Have Gone Out Of Style : NPR
More than two-thirds of people ages 14 to 34 agree that gender does not have to define a person in the way that it used to[.] And 6 in 10 say that men & women do not need to conform to traditional gender roles or behaviors anymore. [...] defying gender expectations. "This generation views gender as a mark of self-expression — they view it as a way of displaying their full sense of self," she says. For example, Rae Tutera, who will appear in an upcoming documentary produced by Lena Dunham about gender nonconformity in fashion, says that the first time she felt like herself was in a men's suit. Tutera, 29, says she is "on the masculine side of the gender spectrum." [...] "Sometimes you have to act braver than you feel," she says, remembering what it felt like to enter a fancy men's suit store in Manhattan. [ ... but ...] most [vast majority of] millennials don't push gender boundaries. [...] [M]illennials are considering the ways in which gender might be flexible. [+See Comments!]

BBC News - A Point of View: Are we really interested in saving time?
... but what about phytonutrients/phytochemicals and fiber ... see nutritionfacts.org ... as long as no long-term study is done, one should not live off it. [...] !!! It's worth asking how we've become as time-poor as we feel we are today. I'm old enough to remember discussions of 40 or 50 years ago about how we'd fill our days when most kinds of human labour were done by machines. Technology is largely a succession of time-saving devices. It's strange, then, that an age of unprecedented technological advance should also be one of such acute time-poverty. Are we really dreaming of living more slowly? Or could it be that many of us are secretly addicted to the fast life? [... being busy became a status symbol, of being needs and important ... for other peoples life/people depend on us ...] [...] the fact that we're going to die. By being always on the move and never leaving ourselves without distraction, we can avoid such disturbing thoughts.

BBC News - American Dream breeds shame and blame for job seekers
"Unemployed auto workers, factory workers, they have a lot of regrets about the past," he said. "A lot of workers are internalising, 'You succeed on your own merits and your own abilities, and if you fail, you're to blame'," Chen says. He isn't alone in seeing this pattern. Experts tell the BBC that job seekers in the US are now, more than ever, blaming themselves for being out of work, due in part to misconceptions about what it takes to succeed in America. [...] Meritocracy became the prevailing ideology, encouraging workers to aim high and reap the resultant rewards. Anyone could achieve greatness. Paupers could become princes. The more people made, the more likely they were to believe they were worthy of it. A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology last year found that the higher people perceived their social class to be, the more likely they were to believe that success comes to those who most deserve it. Fairness: Warum der Mensch Gerechtigkeit will - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Sexualkunde-Reform in Niedersachsen: Schüler wettern gegen Abgeordnete - SPIEGEL ONLINE
BBC News - Selfie science: Taking the perfect snap
The selfie has arguably become the greatest photographic trend of our time. Why are we so interested in taking and sharing selfies and how does observing an image of yourself differ from observing a picture of someone else, asks University College London neuroscientist James Kilner. [...] Given that we have a poor representation of what we look like, this is perhaps unsurprising. What is surprising is that people systematically choose images that have been digitally altered to make the person appear more attractive. In other words, we have an image of ourselves that tends to be younger and more attractive than we actually are. This might in part explain our obsession with selfies. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-magazine-monitor-25763704

Study Finds Something Disturbing Happens to Kids Forced into Traditional Gender Roles - Mic
The idea that gender is "imposed" on a person might be confusing to some people, particularly those who have always felt at home in their bodies. But a study conducted by the University of Warwick's Centre for the Study of Women and Gender proves Cox's point, concluding that children "with fixed ideas about what should be considered 'masculine' and 'feminine,' can actually be detrimental to their physical and mental health," according to ThinkProgress writer Tara Culp-Ressler.  >> http://thinkprogress.org/health/2014/08/07/3468380/gender-roles-health-risks // http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-Spirit_identity_theory

Psychologie Heute-Shop - Greiner:Schamverlust Schamverlust 9783498025243

Facebook is bad for you: Get a life! | The Economist
>> People posting only the best things in their life. << The Economist reported in 2013 that people tend to grow more depressed the more time they spend on Facebook after volunteers in a University of Michigan study had their activities and emotions tracked by submitting reports about both five times every day for two weeks. The finding: people who spent more time on Facebook were more depressed than those who didn’t. “A volunteer’s sex had no influence on these findings; nor did the size of his (or her) social network, his stated motivation for using Facebook, his level of loneliness or depression or his self-esteem,” the Economist said in its report. “[Study organizers] Dr Kross and Dr Verduyn therefore conclude that, rather than enhancing well-being, Facebook undermines it.” ( source http://pando.com/2014/06/17/facebooks-slingshot-brings-some-authenticity-to-the-worlds-most-disingenuous-social-network/ )

BBC News - The power and peril of the middle name + Names as indicator of parents background and child's potential future.
+ Does a baby's name affect its chances in life? || http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-26634477 >> But more recent work has presented a mixed picture. Richard Zweigenhaft, a psychologist at Guilford College in the US, pointed out that wealthy, oddly-named Americans are more likely to find themselves in Who's Who. He found no consistent bad effects of having a strange name, but noted that both common and unusual names are sometimes deemed desirable. Conley, who is a sociologist at New York University, says that children with unusual names may learn impulse control because they may be teased or get used to people asking about their names. "They actually benefit from that experience by learning to control their emotions or their impulses, which is of course a great skill for success." But for the main part, he says, the effect of a name on its bearer rarely amounts to more than the effect of being raised by parents who would choose such a name.

Do Not Despise Your Inner World: Advice on a Full Life from Philosopher Martha Nussbaum | Brain Pickings
Martha Nussbaum - Our emotional life maps our incompleteness: A creature without any needs would never have reasons for fear, or grief, or hope, or anger. But for that very reason we are often ashamed of our emotions, and of the relations of need and dependency bound up with them. Perhaps males, in our society, are especially likely to be ashamed of being incomplete and dependent, because a dominant image of masculinity tells them that they should be self-sufficient and dominant. So people flee from their inner world of feeling, and from articulate mastery of their own emotional experiences. The current psychological literature on the life of boys in America indicates that a large proportion of boys are quite unable to talk about how they feel and how others feel — because they have learned to be ashamed of feelings and needs, and to push them underground.

And because national travel is vry affordable and people want to escape their walls on the weekend if they could afford and its users use it for niche items/services >> providing accommodation for events. Staying in someones place is very different than a hotel. a hotel is generic. every AirBnB is different. It is an experience. not only might you experience a new city, but you also experience someones life, how he or she or they live. Their view. Plus - this is the time of the Airbnb - experience services - because millennials favour experiences of commoditised consumer goods. and babyboomers want that cake too because of the youthification trend. only retrospective u see the pieces of the puzzle.

IMF study finds inequality is damaging to economic growth | Business | The Guardian
International Monetary Fund paper dismisses rightwing argument that redistributing incomes is self-defeating. [...] It is 18 months since the IMF published its controversial view that government cuts to public-sector spending were having a larger detrimental effect than previously thought. The paper, written by its chief economist, Olivier Blanchard, was incendiary and sparked denials in London and Brussels where calls for austerity were strongest. [...] In an interview later Ostry said it was his belief that the inclusion of higher welfare payments would only support the argument in favour of redistribution.

Limbic Revision: How Love Rewires the Brain | Brain Pickings
In a relationship, one mind revises the other; one heart changes its partner. This astounding legacy of our combined status as mammals and neural beings is limbic revision: the power to remodel the emotional parts of the people we love, as our Attractors [coteries of ingrained information patterns] activate certain limbic pathways, and the brain’s inexorable memory mechanism reinforces them. Who we are and who we become depends, in part, on whom we love. [...] Real, honest, complete love requires letting go.

BBC News - Charlotte Church attacks 'sexist' music industry
The music industry has a "culture of demeaning women" that forces stars to sell themselves as sex objects. The business is "a male dominated industry with a juvenile perspective on gender and sexuality" and increasingly wants "sex objects that appear child-like", Church claimed. [...] Sinead O'Connor wrote an open letter to the pop star, warning her not to be exploited by the music business. [...] "Short burst messaging." (Shallow Content with no Context. Cheap. Meaningless. BBC News - Fears over 40% fall in part-time students
t examines why part-time students have fallen by 40% in two years, equivalent to a reduction of 105,000. There are concerns that such part-time courses are necessary to provide the skills needed by industry. Sir Eric Thomas, who headed the review, said "something is going wrong". There has been widespread recognition of the economic importance of part-time courses in allowing adults to improve their skills.

"Masculinity in crisis" cannot justify killing your family
“some men are unable to come to terms with different and developing notions of the institution of the family, where women increasingly play a much more dynamic role than they had in the past”. I don’t suspect Wilson of ulterior motives in saying this, nor do I feel he is making excuses for the 59 men studied by his team. All the same, I find the reporting of his conclusions shocking, particularly in the direct use of the “masculinity in crisis” phrase.

Stop being a wimp! Pain IS good for you | Mail Online
Pain starts activating bodies repair mechanisms. Study found.

This month, British scientists have discovered that the intense pain suffered during a heart attack may actually be helping to save people’s lives. Blocking it with powerful drugs may worsen the victim’s chances of survival, according to the investigators at Bristol University.

They have found that during a heart attack, pain signals from cardiac nerves help to attract stem cells from bone marrow to repair damage, and restore blood flow after a clot has starved the heart of oxygen-carrying blood. The investigations were first done on mice, and then with human patients.

... When we feel pain, it can also be a sign the body is doing what it can to fix the problem.

pain plays an important role in regulating the body’s inflammatory cycle.

The Downside of Cohabiting Before Marriage - NYTimes.com
Couples who cohabit before marriage (and especially before an engagement or an otherwise clear commitment) tend to be less satisfied with their marriages — and more likely to divorce — than couples who do not. These negative outcomes are called the cohabitation effect.

The majority of young adults in their 20s will live with a romantic partner at least once, and more than half of all marriages will be preceded by cohabitation. This shift has been attributed to the sexual revolution and the availability of birth control, and in our current economy, sharing the bills makes cohabiting appealing. But when you talk to people in their 20s, you also hear about something else: cohabitation as prophylaxis.

ie You would only marry someone if he or she agreed to live together with you first, so that you could find out whether you really get along.

But that belief is contradicted by experience.
The "gradual slope" of relationships makes the couple bypass talking about why & what is happening

Blame Facebook Photo Tagging for Your Weird Body Issues
obsessively combing the pages of the social networking site can not only lead to an unhealthy fixation

not only is Facebook making people more cognizant of their own perceived bodily flaws, it's making them feel like they must be in a photographable state every time they attend a social event. Nearly half of survey respondents reported feeling pressure to be "camera-ready" when attending parties, as pictures from the soiree could very well end up on Facebook. The site can also encourage competitiveness in users — more than half of survey respondents said they often find themselves envying their friends' lives based on their status updates and posted photos.

That Facebook would become a megaphone for everyone's body issues — from neurosis to narcissism — is unsurprising.
