Intense future climate change could have a far different impact on the world than current models predict, suggests a thought-provoking new study just out in the journal Science Advances. If atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations were to double in the future, it finds, a major ocean current — one that helps regulate climate and weather patterns all over the world — could collapse. And that could paint a very different picture of the future than what we’ve assumed so far.

Climate change 'to make transatlantic flights longer' - BBC News
Previous studies have shown that climate change is likely to increase turbulence on these transatlantic flights. In this new study researchers modelled how atmospheric winds would change given a doubling of atmospheric CO2. They fed the results into the same route algorithms that airlines routinely use to plan their transatlantic journeys. They found that the winds on the New York to London route will become 15% faster on average. Flights from London will become twice as likely to take over seven hours while flights from New York will speed up and will become twice as likely to take under five hours and 20 minutes. While on average, flights will only gain and lose a few minutes each way, the cumulative impact is "significant" says the study.

January hurricane forms in Atlantic for first time since 1938 | World news | The Guardian
Hurricane Alex develops near Azores in water barely warm enough for any storm to form, says US researchers. This question is what climate scientists across the northern hemisphere are trying to answer, especially since it coincides with an exceptionally cold North Atlantic, which might be even more important because it affects the position of the jet stream. The easterly winds of last week, bringing unseasonably cold weather, are believed to be as a direct result of this North Atlantic cold diverting the jet stream and allowing cold easterly air from Siberia to reach our shores. There has already been snow in Germany.

The immediate cause of the early drying out at the source of the Ouse was simply that there was not enough water in the underground aquifer on which it feeds. But that turns out to be part of something bigger. In March 2013, the local branch of the Environment Agency reported that, depending on conditions, there are now years when they can extract water from the Ouse on no more than 94 days. For the rest of the year, abstractors can use water that has been stored during the wet months in the big reservoir at Ardingly, and they can pump up water through boreholes sunk into the underground aquifers. This in turn reduces the amount of water that bubbles up into the river and its tributaries. The Environment Agency has stopped issuing new abstraction licences for the river. Three category four storms seen together in the Pacific for the first time The current El Nino weather phenomenon could be one of the strongest on record, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). [...] Researchers say that these hurricanes can disrupt the predominant easterly trade winds that are found along the equator. This disruption allows more heat to build up in the eastern part of the Pacific, adding more fuel to stormy conditions. But researchers cautioned that the scale of impacts, especially in the northern hemisphere, is very hard to read because there is also an Arctic warming effect seen in the Atlantic jet stream. "The truth is we don't know what will happen. Will the two patterns reinforce each other? Will they cancel each other? Are they going to act in sequence? Are they going to be regional? The meandering jet stream has accounted for the recent stormy weather over the UK and the bitter winter weather in the US Mid-West remaining longer than it otherwise would have. "We can expect more of the same and we can expect it to happen more frequently," says Prof Francis [...] This results in weather patterns tending to becoming stuck over areas for weeks on end. It also drives cold weather further south and warm weather further north. Examples of the latter are Alaska and parts of Scandinavia, which have had exceptionally warm conditions this winter.

Carbon Dioxide Buildup Could Spell More Turbulence in Flights -
the rise in turbulence could mean higher costs for airlines, because pilots typically fly around turbulence rather than through it. “Our study shows that the amount of air space containing significant turbulence is most likely to double,” said the study’s lead author, Paul D. Williams, an atmospheric scientist at the University of Reading (projected patches of turbulence are in lighter tones in the figure below). “Therefore, if they want to avoid it, pilots won’t be able to fly in a straight line, but they will have to take on a wiggly, more circuitous flight path.” That could lead to longer flights, more delays and a greater expenditure of fuel (which would add more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere).

BBC News - Why, oh why, does it keep raining?
The jet stream normally sits to the north of the UK in summer, directing areas of low pressure and bad weather further north.

But it isn't and that for weeks on end.

+ Climate change

On top of this, there is the related question of climate change. Most researchers are extremely reluctant to attribute any single weather event to global warming.

But Dr Peter Stott, a leading climate scientist at the UK Met Office, says that since the 1970s the amount of moisture in the atmosphere over the oceans has risen by 4%, a potentially important factor.

That does not sound like much but it does mean that extreme rain storms may bring more rain than before - with more moisture in the air, what goes up must come down, and the odds are worse.
