Amazon fires: Merkel and Macron urge G7 to debate 'emergency' - BBC News
Satellite data published by the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) has shown an increase of 85% this year in fires across Brazil, most of them in the Amazon region.

Conservationists say Mr Bolsonaro has encouraged loggers and farmers to clear the land.

'Toxic garbage will be sold here': Outcry as Brazil moves to loosen pesticide laws | World news | The Guardian
“The economic interest will prevail over human and environmental health.”

Of 121 pesticides permitted in Brazil for coffee production, 30 are already banned in the European Union, including the toxic herbicide paraquat, Bombardi reported in an extensive 2017 study. [...] The country already lets foreign companies exploit its lower standards of protection, they said, “exporting hazardous pesticides prohibited from use in their domestic markets to be used in Brazil.”

Under Brazil’s current legislation, pesticides with elements considered teratogenic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, endocrine disruptive, or posing risks to the reproductive system can’t be registered, they said. But under the bill, hazardous pesticides will only be prohibited when there is a “scientifically established unacceptable risk” – a definition too vague to be effective.

Brazil's worst month ever for forest fires blamed on human activity | World news | The Guardian
September saw more fires than any month on record, as experts say uptick is due to expansion of agriculture and reduction of oversight and surveillance //&! Researchers found that forest areas in South America, Africa and Asia – which have until recently played a key role in absorbing greenhouse gases – are now releasing 425 teragrams of carbon annually, which is more than all the traffic in the United States. - https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/sep/28/alarm-as-study-reveals-worlds-tropical-forests-are-huge-carbon-emission-source

Really? The Claim: Eating Soy Increases the Risk of Breast Cancer - NYTimes.com
THE FACTS

Soy milk, tofu and other soy products contain phytoestrogens, chemicals that can mimic the behavior of the hormone estrogen. Because estrogen fuels many breast cancers, soy has long been a source of concern: Can it heighten the risk of breast cancer or raise the odds of recurrence?

In the lab, phytoestrogens can stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells. But in human studies, scientists have not found that diets high in soy increase breast cancer risk. In fact, most have found the reverse.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Despite concerns about its phytoestrogen content, eating soy has not been shown to promote breast cancer.

***

My personal educated take:: reduce refined and fake product (ie products mimicking meat made out of soy)

YouTube - ‪TEDxAustin Robyn O'Brien 2011‬‏
Robyn shares her personal story and how it inspired her current path as a "Real Food" evangelist. Grounded in a successful Wall Street career that was more interested in food as good business than good-for-you, this mother of four was shaken awake by the dangerous allergic reaction of one of her children to a "typical" breakfast. Her mission to unearth the cause revealed more about the food industry than she could stomach, and impelled her to share her findings with others. Informative and inspiring.
About this speaker
Robyn authored "The Unhealthy Truth: How Our Food Is Making Us Sick and What We Can Do About It." A former Wall Street food industry analyst, Robyn brings insight, compassion and detailed analysis to her research into the impact that the global food system is having on the health of our children. She founded allergykidsfoundation.org and ...  The New York Times has passionately described her as "Food's Erin Brockovich."
