'It feels like a wilfully ignored secret': how commentators painted Stoke-on-Trent all wrong | UK news | The Guardian
(career) politician placards and journalists (headline grabbing) can only tell one-line slogan stories. ... for "ordinary people" there is just no space. and they can't make space for them. [...] Not many of these accounts left any room for complexity, nor any recognition of Stoke’s collective push for regeneration and revival, and plenty of local people greeted them with a mixture of anger and anxiety. [ also sold out to professional class, the ascendent as on the other side of the pond ]

Cameron’s monkeys are feasting on the BBC’s nuts | Comment is free | The Guardian
‘The culture secretary, a massive fan of torture porn, had strung the director general over a meat hook and spat into his face while dressed as an old woman’ Culture secretary John Whittingdale. [...] In January 2014, when a critically endangered water lily was stolen from Kew Gardens, the former Conservative MP Louise Mensch tweeted on her Twitter, “Got to say what’s the point? Ordinary plant hardly worth saving.” The Conservatives can’t even see the point of flowers. It’s asking a lot to expect them to see the point of the BBC. It doesn’t even attract bees.

// via bit.ly/1R6V2yA

bbc.in/1GQXVcJ - leaner simpler, delayering &! TV Licence shortfall - there will be calls to close iPlayer loophole // &! BBC director general Tony Hall has said he believes the licence fee has "got 10 years of life left in it". The Guardian view on the licence fee: a time to rally round the BBC - The way to stop the Conservatives marginalising the corporation is to make them realise that an assault would spell political disaster - bit.ly/1JzeQ6F [...] What is pernicious about these objections, supposedly arising from principle, is that they frequently veil envy of the BBC from its business competitors, whether Rupert Murdoch or the Daily Mail. Jeff Bezos Bought The Washington Post For One Thing: Distribution ⚙ Co.Labs ⚙ code + community
[surrounding yourself with smarter people] In some sense you wouldn’t even be human anymore. People like Jeff are better regarded as hyper-intelligent aliens with a tangential interest in human affairs . . . Trust me folks, I saw this happen time and again, for years. Jeff Bezos has all these incredibly intelligent, experienced domain experts surrounding him at huge meetings, and on a daily basis he thinks of shit that they never saw coming. It’s a guaranteed facepalm fest. [...] Purpose-built distribution networks for different kinds of content are beginning to solidify into infrastructure, just as e-commerce did 10 years ago. And if we’ve learned anything about Bezos, it’s that he loves to own his own infrastructure and leverage it into new kinds of business we can’t even imagine right now.
