Inequality driving 'deaths of despair' - BBC News

there is income inequality

there is political inequality, your voice only heard when you have money to donate and can pay lobbyists.

Widening inequalities in pay, health and opportunities in the UK are undermining trust in democracy, says an Institute for Fiscal Studies report. [...] The think tank warns of runaway incomes for high earners but rises in "deaths of despair", such as from addiction and suicide, among the poorest.
It warns of risks to "centre-ground" politics from stagnating pay and divides in health and education.
The report says such widening gaps are "making a mockery of democracy".
The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), one of the country's leading research institutes, is launching what it says is the UK's biggest analysis of inequality.
That will be chaired by Nobel Prize-winning economist Prof Sir Angus Deaton.

Food Standards Scotland chief says NHS at 'tipping point' amid obesity crisis | HeraldScotland
february 2018 by asterisk2a
However, the head of Scotland's food watchdog said he believed there was a growing consensus in public and political opinion that a "tipping point" was being reached in the battle against obesity, and that a failure to reverse the crisis would eventually "cripple the NHS". The number of people living in Scotland with Type 2 diabetes has increased by 29 per cent since 2010, to more than 289,000, according to figures published today.

Over 3,700 deaths linked to alcohol - BBC News
february 2018 by asterisk2a
Alcohol was a factor in more than 3,700 deaths in a single year in Scotland, according to new research.
Findings from NHS Health Scotland show that drink was involved in more than 1,000 deaths from cancer in 2015.
It was also linked to hundreds of deaths from conditions such as liver disease, as well as accidental injuries.
In addition, more than 41,000 people were admitted to hospital as a result of consuming alcohol, the study found.
Experts said the findings show that alcohol has a wider impact on health than many people think.

Patients are suffering while the SNP shamefully dithers | Kevin McKenna | Opinion | The Guardian
october 2017 by asterisk2a
One senior health professional told me last week: “Yes, there is a backlog for operations, but the issue is the front and back door – not the bit in the middle. They are trying to solve the wrong problem and bringing on these new centres will only add to the problem. In addition, there is a huge problem with a lack of doctors across parts of the system. If they are moving planned care into these new elective centres, how are they going to staff them?”

What to do if your child is overweight - BBC News

One in ten young people in the UK, aged between five and 19, is obese, according to new research that looks at obesity trends in over 200 countries. How your blood may predict your future health | Inequality | The Guardian
october 2017 by asterisk2a
New research into bloodstream ‘biomarkers’ aims to unlock the full impact of social status on people’s lifetime health outcomes. The key is exposure to stress - quantitated self. making decisions on your own when presented w data? in case of the weight scale, never worked. why will it now? its just more medicalisation - door open for big pharma so people pop pills. vs inconvenience of changing diet lifestyle and learning something new like cooking and meditation. // &! Deprivation and Poverty Stress: The analysis suggested people in lower socioeconomic groups have a demonstrably longer exposure to chronic inflammation – with all its knock-on impacts on long-term health – even once the team corrected for the “usual suspects” of health inequality, including diet and smoking. There’s clearly something else at work. (inequality = health inequality)

Global cost of obesity-related illness to hit $1.2tn a year from 2025 | Society | The Guardian
october 2017 by asterisk2a
The cost of treating ill health caused by obesity around the world will top $1.2tn every year from 2025 unless more is done to check the rapidly worsening epidemic, according to new expert estimates. Obesity and smoking are the two main drivers behind the soaring numbers of cancers, heart attacks, strokes and diabetes worldwide, grouped together officially as non-communicable diseases. They are the biggest killers of the modern world.

Mental health: 10 charts on the scale of the problem - BBC News
october 2017 by asterisk2a
Over 10 years NHS prescriped 100% more anti-depressants. Medicalised Society. Parked indefinetly on management medication no healing. Left behind. // But so too is the fact prescribing patterns have changed. Doctors are much more likely to keep people on drugs for longer with evidence suggesting it is a more effective way of treating patients.
But as common as antidepressants are, the fact remains the majority of people with mental illness report they are not getting help.
Only one in three of those polled said they were receiving treatment, according to NHS Digital.

Chronic ill health among working age population poses 'unsustainable drain' on NHS | HeraldScotland
september 2017 by asterisk2a
Currently 39 per cent of the working age population in Scotland has at least one long-term condition, but that is forecast to surge as the population ages and Scotland grapples with the fallout of an obesity epidemic.
Prof MacDonald said a failure to prevent and manage long-term conditions properly would be catastrophic as pension age increases to 68 or more.

Loneliness: The cost of the 'last taboo' - BBC News
september 2017 by asterisk2a
There are an estimated 1.2 million people in the UK who have "chronic" loneliness, with links to poorer physical and mental health and increased use of GPs, hospitals and social services.
The campaign says it should be seen as a problem in public health terms, like obesity and smoking.
For a decade of an older person's life, the extra economic cost of loneliness is calculated as £6,000. [...] "Everyone's on their phones, they're closed off."

NHS Health Scotland: E-cigs 'definitely' less harmful than smoking - BBC News
september 2017 by asterisk2a
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-41339790 - E-cigarettes are "definitely" less harmful than smoking tobacco, health bodies in Scotland have stated for the first time.
NHS Health Scotland said it wanted to "clarify" confusion around the harms and benefits of vaping devices.
More than 20 organisations have signed up to the consensus, which was led by NHS Health Scotland.
But health chiefs said that using e-cigarettes while still smoking did not provide any health benefits.
The consensus statement, published by Scotland's national health education and promotion agency, was agreed by the Scottish government, health boards, academia and charities such as the British Lung Foundation and Cancer Research UK.

Snacks, fags and booze: Scotland's triple health challenge | Holyrood Magazine
september 2017 by asterisk2a
Obesity is linked to 13 types of cancer, as well as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and strokes, with obesity-related illnesses costing Scotland approximately £4.6bn. The annual cost of type 2 diabetes alone to NHS Scotland is £800m.
Obesity is now the second biggest risk factor for cancer after smoking and Cancer Research UK has warned that Scotland is in the grip of an obesity epidemic, with Scots consuming 110 tonnes of sugar a day, fuelled by promotions on unhealthy foods. End austerity – and kickstart Martin Luther King’s revolution of values | Richard Kozul-Wright | Opinion | The Guardian
september 2017 by asterisk2a
Hyperglobalisation has concentrated massive wealth in a few hands, boosting the cult of materialism that the great civil rights campaigner warned us about // Byung-Chul Han // The real threat now is to the underlying trust, cohesion and sense of fairness that markets depend upon in order to function effectively. Against this, insisting that “there is no alternative” is yesterday’s political slogan. People everywhere desire much the same thing: a decent job, a secure home, a safe environment, a better future for their children and a government that listens and responds to their concerns. They want a different deal from that offered by hyperglobalisation. Prosperity for all cannot be delivered by austerity-minded politicians, rent-seeking corporations and speculative bankers. What is urgently needed now is a global new deal. Three elements – recovery, regulation and redistribution – remain at the heart of any such deal. Book Richard Kozul-Wright is director of the globalisation and development strategies division in the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Its annual report, Beyond Austerity: Towards a Global New Deal, is published today

Analysis: a year in health - supply and demand | Holyrood Magazine

stop increasing general taxation. increase tax on causes. Verursacherprinzip. // Calls for a similarly tough approach on obesity have not yet been rewarded with a strategy, despite one being due last year and Scotland’s obesity rates amongst the highest in the world, even higher than in the rest of the UK.
Could the protracted legal wrangling with the drinks industry have tempered the Scottish Government’s appetite for imposing tough restrictions on food manufacturers and supermarkets? It will be clearer when the obesity and diet strategy emerges in the winter. [...] One long-awaited strategy which did see the light of day was the new mental health strategy, launched by Maureen Watt in March, but the minister may well have been disappointed in the response.
The document “lacks the ambition and investment that Scotland deserves” said the Scottish Association for Mental Health’s chief executive, Billy Watson.
The question, as with the rest of NHS Scotland’s challenges, is how would it be paid for?

NHS waiting times 'driving people to turn to private treatment' | Society | The Guardian
september 2017 by asterisk2a
Growing numbers of patients are paying for private treatment to beat rationing and delays for treatment imposed by the cash-strapped NHS.
People who do not have health insurance are increasingly paying up to £14,880 for operations such as a hip or knee replacement or cataract removal, a report reveals.
Profit-driven hospital firms are experiencing 15 to 25% year-on-year rises in the number of uninsured “self-payers”, with the increase mainly driven by long waiting times to undergo non-urgent surgery in NHS hospitals. Patients are using their savings or taking out loans to pay for their treatment. [...] There has also been a rise in those paying for private cancer care in the wake of NHS England cutting the number of drugs it pays for under the Cancer Drugs Fund. “Widely publicised restrictions on NHS funding for cancer drugs is fuelling the growth in self-pay oncology,” notes the report, titled The Private Healthcare UK Self-Pay Market 2017. & https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/sep/11/the-guardian-view-on-the-nhs-crisis-private-treatment-is-not-the-answer

E-cigarettes containing nicotine linked to raised heart attack risk | Society | The Guardian
september 2017 by asterisk2a
A study discovered that vaping devices containing the stimulant could cause a stiffening of the arteries, as well as an increased heart rate and blood pressure.
Swedish scientists recruited 15 healthy volunteers to take part in the experiment, none of whom had used e-cigarettes before.
The tests found in the 30 minutes after smoking the e-cigarettes containing nicotine, there was a significant increase in blood pressure, heart rate and arterial stiffness.
There was no such effect in the volunteers who smoked the e-cigarettes without nicotine.
