Pando: At what point is the convenience of technology outweighed by the constant stress?
Yesterday, I wrote about new proposals to allow the government to trawl the social media accounts of visa applicants before allowing or denying entry to the US.  Specifically, I wrote about my relief, as a visa-carrying foreign worker, at having deleted my social media accounts last year. For all the myriad reasons the government might declare me unworthy of living here -- particularly under President Trump -- at least an old dumb tweet won’t be one of them. [...] Connected technology was supposed to make our lives easier. And of course it has, in countless ways. But what it doesn’t seem to have done is made our lives less stressful...

Pando: Hot or Not founder responds to Nancy Jo Sales' new book: "I don’t think we invented human nature"
Nearly every tweet I’ve read about Nancy Jo Sales’ new book “American Girls: Social Media and the Secret Lives of Teenagers” has been some variation of “I’m scared to read this.” Indeed by page 20, I started making plans to move to an Amish village by the time my daughter turns 12. The deeper I read, the more I was impressed by many of the young women Sales interviewed, and the more sorry I felt that we've given them this world.  [...] Sales also describes how young girls worship Kim Kardashian and derive their self worth from how many likes they get on Instagram.

Draft snooper's charter 'fails on spying powers and privacy protections' | World news | The Guardian
Theresa May’s draft “snooper’s charter” bill fails to cover all the intrusive spying powers of the security agencies and lacks clarity in its privacy protections, a parliamentary committee has said. The intelligence and security committee said the draft legislation published by the home secretary suffered from a lack of sufficient time and preparation. It was evident that even those working on the legislation had not always been clear about what it was intended to achieve, it said.

Every Day I Want To Quit Social Media
[ no more time to reflect and think for yourself ... we are all and feel Alon Together. ] I am drowning in a sea of anxiety created by Twitter and Facebook. [...] We all want to be recognized as clever or witty. [ your best side, public ] [...] I ended up on social media for a reason, and though the reason escapes me during moments of sheer panic and anxiety, I take part, no matter what — the pursuit of relevancy, or, in the strictest sense of the term, validation, is an imperative that exists as a key part of humankind’s quest for meaning. Self-definition has become intertwined with social media. We are all here for each other. I wake up staring at my phone. I fall asleep to the glow of the very same screen.

David Cameron & the director of the FBI have both asked for ‘backdoors’ to be included in encryption software [...] Keys Under Doormats: Mandating insecurity by requiring government access to all data and communications, is worth reading in full. It concludes that proposals for backdoors are “unworkable in practice, raise enormous legal and ethical questions, and would undo progress on security at a time when internet vulnerabilities are causing extreme economic harm”.

Resistance is not enough – we need a whole new political vision | Zoe Williams | Comment is free | The Guardian
[ trying to pit the weak and squeezed against the weaker, on the the dole, and bread line and disadvantaged (born into extreme poverty) ] // The budget took us further down a vindictive, regressive path. DDR: Tonbandmitschnitte west- und ostdeutscher Denunzianten - SPIEGEL ONLINE
[ Jeder fuer sich selbst. Alle under generalverdacht.

Teachers 'fear debating extremism in class' - BBC News
Teachers are avoiding class discussions on Islamic extremism for fear they may have to report pupils to the police, a teachers' union says. New counter-terror rules aiming to expose radicalisation require schools to report any concerns about pupils. The National Union of Teachers says the rules are too heavy handed and stifle much-needed debate in schools. The Conservatives said the guidance made clear that no teacher should feel unable to talk about sensitive issues. A party spokesman said teaching about "fundamental British values" actively encouraged such discussions. 'British values' The Counter Terrorism and Security Act which became law in February puts a responsibility on schools to prevent children being drawn into terrorism and challenge extremist ideas.

Former Homeland Security head tells Pando why he doesn’t trust his fitness data to the cloud | PandoDaily
“One shouldn’t default to the position that connecting everything is perfect.” Chertoff tells Pando he also applies a kind of digital “Washington Post test” to his activities that require him to allow any of his data to be captured by a product or service. (That’s a reference to the litmus test among politicians of a certain vintage, weighing whether they’d be ok with the Washington Post finding out and printing a particular thing they’ve done or said.) All of us, Chertoff says, should treat our data online with the same degree of care with which we guard our reputation. [...] [ book “Terms of Service"] [...] It also wasn’t that long ago that Apple had a major security breach with iCloud. You can’t change your fingerprint. But the safest way to guard sensitive information is not to collect it in the first place. [ everything in the cloud is at risk. period, private data that can, if stole, put your well-being at risk, should not be there without merit/reason.]

The French government can now force ISPs to block websites without a court order | PandoDaily
Efforts to grant the French government the ability to control which websites are allowed inside the country accelerated after the shooting at Charlie Hebdo’s office on January 7. The government has also threatened to consider companies like Facebook and Google “accomplices” to hate-speech if they don’t remove extremist content from their properties. That’s the unfortunate irony of the Charlie Hebdo attack: an effort to silence a magazine which has since become an idol for free speech has led France and the United Kingdom to propose or introduce laws that limit speech through direct censorship and intimidation. [...] Internet content, France once again circumvents the judicial power, betraying the separation of powers in limiting what is the first freedom of all in a democracy — freedom of speech. // invites also abuse of the system. say one hacks ones business website, uploads illegal stuff, reports website, gets blocked 24hrs later, business has no website/business for 3 months.

Chief constable warns against ‘drift towards police state’ | UK news | The Guardian
The battle against extremism could lead to a “drift towards a police state” in which officers are turned into “thought police”, one of Britain’s most senior chief constables has warned. [...] It is politicians, academics and others in civil society who have to define what counts as extremist ideas, he says. [...] He stressed he supported new counter-terrorism measures unveiled by the government last week, including bans on alleged extremist speakers from colleges. Fahy said government, academics and civil society needed to decide where the line fell between free speech and extremism. Otherwise, he warned, it would be decided by the security establishment, so-called “securocrats”, including the security services, government and senior police chiefs like Fahy. &! see Twitter & FB & GitHub now (have to comply with regional/country specific censorship et al - ie Germany got laws against the display and public use of Nazi symbols - tcrn.ch/1w62DmH

May be for western people it's hard to believe how can it be possible to support this crazy regime. I can tell you that even top managers from leading russian internet company (from my private conversation with them) dreamed about great russian firewall because in that case, they won't have competitors like Google. Furthermore even IT guys like Putin regime and don't get worry about crazy laws passed against the internet. I assure you in that because many of my colleagues really like Stalin and really like what's happening in Ukraine. Almost all people in Russia really hate western world. They don't care about currency exchange rates and inflation, they care only about imperialism. When Putin made desision about Crimea, and when people totally supported it, I stopped believe in Russia at all. Russia is a pure soviet country, with pure 100% soviet mindset, vast majority of russian people like idea of self-isolation. This is why Russia has no future as a liberal market-driven country.

[...] behördlicher Vertuschung: "nationale Sicherheit" [...] demokratischen Gesellschaft angreift.

How Social Media Silences Debate - NYTimes.com
http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/aug/26/facebook-twitter-snowden-nsa-revelations-pew >> Facebook and Twitter users 'more likely' to censor their views offline Pew study warns about ‘spiral of silence’ in US discussion of Edward Snowden’s NSA online surveillance revelations >> “The traditional view of the spiral of silence is that people choose not to speak out for fear of isolation. Other Pew Internet research has found that it is common for social media users to be mistaken about their friends’ beliefs and to be surprised once they discover their friends’ actual views via social media. Thus, it might be the case that people do not want to disclose their minority views for fear of disappointing their friends, getting into fruitless arguments, or losing them entirely. Some people may prefer not to share their views on social media because their posts persist and can be found later—perhaps by prospective employers or others with high status.” - http://bit.ly/1q4LTra

Study Finds Something Disturbing Happens to Kids Forced into Traditional Gender Roles - Mic
The idea that gender is "imposed" on a person might be confusing to some people, particularly those who have always felt at home in their bodies. But a study conducted by the University of Warwick's Centre for the Study of Women and Gender proves Cox's point, concluding that children "with fixed ideas about what should be considered 'masculine' and 'feminine,' can actually be detrimental to their physical and mental health," according to ThinkProgress writer Tara Culp-Ressler.  >> http://thinkprogress.org/health/2014/08/07/3468380/gender-roles-health-risks // http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-Spirit_identity_theory

Personal Privacy Is Only One of the Costs of NSA Surveillance | Threat Level | WIRED
The Foundation’s report, released today, outlines some of the collateral damage of NSA surveillance in several areas, including: Economic losses to US businesses due to lost sales and declining customer trust. The deterioration of internet security as a result of the NSA stockpiling zero-day vulnerabilities, undermining encryption and installing backdoors in software and hardware products. Undermining the government’s credibility and leadership on “internet freedom” and governance issues such as censorship. -->> its like trade sanctions - but on the internet among other things. +++ http://youtu.be/DU_1yoUzKs8
