UK housing crisis deepens as benefit claimants priced out by high rents | Society | The Guardian
LHA is relied upon by 1.2m households to rent private accommodation but it has been frozen since 2016 and will continue to be frozen until at least 2020 as part of welfare cuts.

Council bosses have said that with private rents continuing to rise, sharp falls in affordability over the last three years are causing homelessness and child neglect as families cut back on essentials including food to make up rent shortfalls.

Too poor to play: children in social housing blocked from communal playground | Cities | The Guardian
In a move reminiscent of the ‘poor doors’ scandal, a London developer has segregated play areas for richer and poorer residents [...] Guardian Cities has discovered that developer Henley Homes has blocked social housing residents from using shared play spaces at its Baylis Old School complex on Lollard Street, south London. The development was required to include a mix of “affordable” and social rental units in order to gain planning permission. [...] But the designs were altered after planning permission was granted to block the social housing tenants from accessing the communal play areas.

Yorkshire council leaders threaten to pull out of asylum seeker housing scheme | UK news | The Guardian
Responsibility for housing people seeking asylum in the UK was taken away from local authorities in 2012 and given to Serco, G4S and Clearsprings under contracts with the Home Office. The Refugee Council criticised the system in October for “routinely dumping” traumatised people into “squalid, unsafe, slum housing conditions”.

Racism will not be solved by there being more mixed-race children | Nikesh Shukla | Life and style | The Guardian
“Beige Britain” won’t be the utopia we want. It’ll be the same country it always was, but with a significant demographic change. The whole “mixed-race kids ending racism” feeling is a nice thought that doesn’t change anything. It doesn’t look at divisions in the country right now. It doesn’t interrogate problems we have. US-Eltern meiden Adoption afroamerikanischer Kinder - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Once you’re labeled a felon, the old forms of discrimination— employment discrimination, housing discrimination, denial of the right to vote, denial of educational opportunity, denial of food stamps and other public benefits and exclusion from jury service — are suddenly legal. ...We have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it." - Michelle Alexander

The Civil Rights Movement Is Going in Reverse in Alabama | New Republic
But in other, less obvious ways, black people in Alabama and across the South are as politically vulnerable as they’ve been since the emergence of the civil rights movement. “It’s a total disempowering of African Americans,” Sanders said. “We are going back to the past very fast.” [...] From that perch, he struck a deal in 2006 with Republican Governor Bob Riley that raised the threshold at which an Alabama family of four starts paying state income tax, from $4,600 annually to $12,500. Knight would have preferred to raise the threshold to the poverty line, but he felt that he had to focus on what was politically feasible. It was an approach indicative of Knight’s overall legislative philosophy. “ [...] Sanders and Knight were criticized by some black politicians, as well as by liberal white ones, for being too timid, too incremental. But the two argued that they were playing a long game and that, eventually, they’d achieve their larger goals.
