Bathroom predator myth defeats transgender rights in New Hampshire.
But in the end, the bathroom predator myth still won out. House Republican leadership insisted that a trans nondiscrimination law would somehow allow sexual predators to rape women and children in public bathrooms. And anti-LGBTQ advocates overwhelmed legislators over the weekend with anti-trans rants, alleging that a vote for the bill would lead to more sexual assault. The bathroom predator myth, of course, is wholly fictional, a canard concocted to dress up religious objections to trans rights in secular pretext. Yet by sheer force of repetition, activists have managed to convince legislators that this fabrication might be a legitimate concern, introducing ersatz ambiguity into the discussion—and giving representatives cover to oppose trans rights.

Conspiracy-theorist nutbags run Congress, and they’re making Benghazi a verb: Next up, climate scientists - Salon.com
But in this political environment, being cautious about just handing a bunch of documents over to Republican is a smart move. After watching the Planned Parenthood and Benghazi hearings, a couple of things are clear: One, the Republicans will extract any stray word or number they can and take it out of context in an effort to advance their political agenda, with concerns about decency and honesty not restraining them in the slightest. Two, if they can’t find something like that, they’ll probably just lie about it. [...] The episode was a stellar demonstration of how the utter lack of morals and decency among House Republicans will lead them to distort and lie about numbers, even in the most obnoxious and obvious ways. [...] Imagine what kind of lies and distortions Republicans could gin up with the complex equations and variables that go into climate science. // confusing people. put doubt into peoples mind.

The Trans Movement Needs a New, Science Based Strategy | Brynn Tannehill
Tuesday's defeat of HERO highlights several conclusions that the LGBT movement needs to take to heart for the next decade or so. Foremost is that we will not win transgender issues directly at the ballot box, or in the gerrymandered republican legislatures which dominate the political landscape. [...] When opponents frame legal protections for transgender people as a choice between a group strangers (who are suspected of being perverts anyway) and the safety your wives and daughters, transgender people will lose every time. So far, anti-LGBT forces have been far more successful at pushing their narrative. I don't foresee this changing anytime soon. [...] Convincing large numbers of people driven by fear and religious beliefs simply will not happen. &! bit.ly/1MgrDKK &! https://redd.it/3rxwmd &! slate.me/1Op7eck

Robert Reich - Timeline Photos
What about all the ballyhoo about manufacturing jobs coming back to America? Well, some have. But they pay lousy wages. The average wages of production and non-supervisory employees in manufacturing are lower today than they were in 1985, when adjusted for inflation. [...] Bottom line: Most Americans have got zilch out of this recovery. In fact, they’re worse off now than they were in 2000. Meanwhile, the top 0.1 percent is doing fabulously well. More and more people are concluding the game is rigged -- which it is. No one should be surprised at the surge in populist anger on the left and the right.

Podcast Extra: After Oregon - On The Media
In 2011, Michael Luo of The New York Times was writing a series of articles about gun laws across the country. He requested data from Oregon officials about the state's gun license holders, but when pro-gun rights groups learned he was trying to get the information they lobbied the state legislature to shield the data. Within months a new law had passed: all of the records, formerly in the public domain, were now private. Bob talks with Luo about why the data is important and why shielding it can making searching for answers after a tragedy so difficult.  Bob also revisits his conversation with Tom Teves, whose son Alex was killed in the shooting rampage in Aurora, Colorado, about his efforts to keep the press from turning mass killers into media icons with his group, NoNotoriety.

The All New Don't Think of an Elephant!: Know Your Values and Frame the Debate by George Lakoff: tax evasion - tax avoidance = those people are the scum, the benefits of a welfare state ... financing public resources (infrastructure investment) ... private depends on the public!!! if private takes active measures to not bear the fair and reasonable weight they can afford ... than the public, anything that is provided for everyone, can not exist as is. [... you have to understand framing. how to frame x issue ... in terms that it feels/impacts everyone. every rational being seeing the issue at hand ... thus frame it in a moral and fairness / speak to the Gerechtigkeitssinn ... moral ... public resources/utilities give you freedom !!! < welfare state - ie abortion issue, birth control, reproductive rights is also about individual freedom - sex ed is also about freedom, kids making up their own minds, granting them the freedom to think for themselves - and not get their parents view. ]

The Civil Rights Movement Is Going in Reverse in Alabama | New Republic
But in other, less obvious ways, black people in Alabama and across the South are as politically vulnerable as they’ve been since the emergence of the civil rights movement. “It’s a total disempowering of African Americans,” Sanders said. “We are going back to the past very fast.” [...] From that perch, he struck a deal in 2006 with Republican Governor Bob Riley that raised the threshold at which an Alabama family of four starts paying state income tax, from $4,600 annually to $12,500. Knight would have preferred to raise the threshold to the poverty line, but he felt that he had to focus on what was politically feasible. It was an approach indicative of Knight’s overall legislative philosophy. “ [...] Sanders and Knight were criticized by some black politicians, as well as by liberal white ones, for being too timid, too incremental. But the two argued that they were playing a long game and that, eventually, they’d achieve their larger goals.

Pew-Studie: Republikaner in USA lehnen Wissenschaft ab - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Van Jones: Protecting Society from Corporate 'Tyranny' - YouTube
Van Jones, Founding President of Rebuild the Dream, criticizes the influence corporations and special interests have on our political system. Jones argues that "the Tea Party is correct, our liberties are under threat," but their "negative" rhetoric is misguided.

In 2010, the United States Supreme Court held in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission that laws prohibiting corporate and union political expenditures were unconstitutional. Citizens United made it legal for corporations and unions to spend from their general treasuries to finance independent expenditures, but did not alter the prohibition on direct corporate or union contributions to federal campaigns; those are still prohibited.

Obama Is Too Good for Us: Charles Fried on the Debt Fiasco - The Daily Beast
The debt deal fiasco proved that any decent, honest politician like the president simply doesn’t stand a chance against the likes of Michele Bachmann. Charles Fried on how the Tea Party ruined America.

Look at the roster of leaders vying for my party’s nomination. At the top of the list stand Mitt Romney, who will say anything, and Michele Bachmann, who assured us that defaulting on the national debt is no big deal, while a sensible man like Jon Huntsman is in single digits.
Oh, I know: it’s not funny, but one must either laugh or weep.

Another Deal Older and Deeper in Debt Currency Thoughts
Politicians failed to segregate what needs to be done in the long term from what ought to be  addressed in the short term and, as a result, got both tasks wrong.

Below are ten consequences I expect from the Federal government’s latest handiwork. Obama will probably be a one-term president.
The increasingly skewed distribution of U.S. wealth and income will become even more so.  Because of the diminishing marginal utility of money, this trend dampens the potential growth rate of aggregate personal consumption.

Peter Diamond withdraws Fed nomination with scathing attack on GOP - Political Hotsheet - CBS News
Nobel Prize-winning economist Peter Diamond announced the withdrawal of his nomination to serve on the Federal Reserve board with a scathing rebuke of this Republican critics.
He suggested his impressive credentials were overlooked because he favors a monetary policy out of sync with Republican views."Skilled analytical thinking should not be drowned out by mistaken, ideologically driven views that more is always better or less is always better," Diamond wrote.Diamond's main detractor, Sen. Richard Shelby (Ala.), the top Republican on the Senate Banking Committee, argued that Diamond's expertise in labor market theory was not relevant to the job."But understanding the labor market -- and the process by which workers and jobs come together and separate -- is critical to devising an effective monetary policy," Diamond wrote.

Gay donors fuel Obama's 2012 campaign - Ben Smith and Maggie Haberman - POLITICO.com
“He’s coming back up in the estimation of the gay community pretty rapidly, and I think justifiably,” said Ethan Geto, a New York lobbyist and key figure in Dean’s gay fundraising, who said many gay supporters had hoped “Don’t Ask” would be repealed during the president’s first year in office. “When things didn’t happen in (that) time frame and on the track that Obama had held out hope for, people got very disillusioned,” said Geto. “This was the time to strike.”
Others said that Republican candidates’ shots at gay rights in their attempt to appeal to socially conservative Iowa voters had reminded gay donors of the stakes. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum this week said gays and lesbians shouldn’t have the “privilege” of adopting children, while former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty suggested he would block the repeal of the ban on gays in the military, and Donald Trump compared same-sex marriage to faddish golf gear.

Why We're Fasting - NYTimes.com
This is a moral issue; the budget is a moral document. We can take care of the deficit and rebuild our infrastructure and strengthen our safety net by reducing military spending and eliminating corporate subsidies and tax loopholes for the rich. Or we can sink further into debt and amoral individualism by demonizing and starving the poor. Which side are you on?

Commodities Regulator Gary Gensler Pleads for More Money - NYTimes.com
Mr. Gensler, in testimony before a House appropriations subcommittee, called the Commodity Futures Trading Commission “a good investment for the American public, overseeing vast markets with a relatively small staff.” Despite the nation’s budget deficit, Mr. Gensler said his agency needed a budget increase “because, as we saw in 2008, without oversight of the swaps market, billions of taxpayer dollars may be at risk.”
Although the White House agrees with Mr. Gensler, Congressional Republicans are eying severe cuts to the agency’s funding.

Prospect of WikiLeaks Dump Poses Problems for Regulators - NYTimes.com
“high-tech terrorist.” (Such was Vice President Joseph R. Biden’s description of Mr. Assange over the weekend.)And just Monday, Mr. Assange told a reporter from The Times of London that he had enough material to make bosses of a major bank resign.
You’d think that bank executives would be quaking in their Gucci loafers. But guess who may be even more nervous about the possible data dump?Regulators in Washington.

It seems the prospect of gigabytes of e-mail and other documents from financial institutions can be viewed one of two ways: as a treasure trove for regulators to scrutinize — or as an embarrassment for the United States government, which has spent millions of dollars investigating Wall Street in the last two years without a scalp to show for it.
Inside the Securities and Exchange Commission, the organization is bracing for a public outcry,

Debt Pyramid Scheme Now the Norm in U.S.: Roger Lowenstein - Bloomberg
The tax compromise that the president, after protracted bargaining with Congress, signed into law Friday represents the worst of each party’s principles. Democrats agreed to forgo their insistence on raising taxes to narrow the widening budget deficit. Republicans forgot (again) that they are supposedly the party of smaller government.
In effect, each party stuck to the portion of its principles that will be popular with the electorate right now -- and dismissed the part that would be unpopular. The Washington compromise is symptomatic of the disease infecting government at many levels. It is known as short-termism.
The better course would have been the simplest one: Let the Bush tax cuts -- on every income group -- expire.

Axis of Depression - NYTimes.com
China and Germany are on the warpath against the Fed, accustomed to running huge trade surpluses. But for some countries to run trade surpluses, others must run trade deficits — and, for years, that has meant us. The Fed’s expansionary policies, however, have the side effect of somewhat weakening the dollar, making U.S. goods more competitive, and paving the way for a smaller U.S. deficit. And the Chinese and Germans don’t want to see that happen.

For the Chinese government, by the way, attacking the Fed has the additional benefit of shifting attention away from its own currency manipulation, which keeps China’s currency artificially weak — precisely the sin China falsely accuses America of committing.

But why are Republicans joining in this attack?

Milton Friedman, who blamed the Fed for not acting more forcefully during the Great Depression — and who, in 1998, called on the Bank of Japan to “buy government bonds on the open market,” exactly what the Fed is now doing.

Jon Stewart Rally Shifts Blame to the News Media - NYTimes.com
So instead the host of “The Daily Show” took steady aim on the one American institution that everyone can agree to hate: The Media. Within the first minute of his deft, very articulate stump speech at the end of the rally, Mr. Stewart turned his gun sights on the, um, fake news, which he called, “the country’s 24-hour political pundit perpetual panic conflictinator,” which, he added, “did not cause our problems, but its existence makes solving them that much harder.”

“The press can hold its magnifying glass up to our problems bringing them into focus, illuminating issues heretofore unseen or they can use that magnifying glass to light ants on fire and then perhaps host a week of shows on the sudden, unexpected dangerous, flaming ant epidemic,” he said, to roars of approval from the crowd.
