Inequality driving 'deaths of despair' - BBC News
there is income inequality
there is health inequality (air)
there is political inequality, your voice only heard when you have money to donate and can pay lobbyists.
>> electoral reform (1), limit lobby influence and party donations (2), citizens assembly, devolution might have failed.

Widening inequalities in pay, health and opportunities in the UK are undermining trust in democracy, says an Institute for Fiscal Studies report. [...] The think tank warns of runaway incomes for high earners but rises in "deaths of despair", such as from addiction and suicide, among the poorest.

It warns of risks to "centre-ground" politics from stagnating pay and divides in health and education.

The report says such widening gaps are "making a mockery of democracy".

The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), one of the country's leading research institutes, is launching what it says is the UK's biggest analysis of inequality.

That will be chaired by Nobel Prize-winning economist Prof Sir Angus Deaton.

Are the women speaking up about sexual assault taking down celebrities or the patriarchy? / LGBTQ Nation
Within a patriarchal society that transmits distorted binary gender extremes, questions inevitably arise: How dare women demand their reproductive freedoms, which would reduce or even take away my (the male) making the decision whether to carry or abort my genetic offspring? How dare a woman choose not to marry a man? How dare women compete with me for a high social position?
How dare gay men think of coming onto me? How dare trans men take on the privileges by transitioning that I have “earned” from birth? How dare trans women relinquish male privilege and betray their gender (read as betray patriarchy itself)? How dare intersex people not choose to “become either one or the other”?
Toxic forms of hypermasculinity require the promotion and use of firearms to keep at bay the intensive psychosocial compulsive fear and dread of penetration from bullets, and by extension the gaze of gay and bisexual men, and the female gaze since patriarchy promises males the right to the aggressive outward intrusive gaze, the right of penetration of “others.” And when patriarchal social and family structures converge with patriarchal religious systems, which reinforce strictly defined gender hierarchies of male domination, women and girl’s oppression and oppression of those who transgress sexual-, sexuality-, and gender binaries and boundaries became inevitable.

The sun may never set on British misconceptions about our empire | Ian Jack | Opinion | The Guardian
How much this avoidance has to do with Britain’s present feelings towards its old empire is hard to know. No doubt the history curriculum has changed since my day and, in any case, feelings about the past come from many other sources than the classroom. But according to a YouGov poll conducted around the time of the Rhodes Must Fall protests two years ago, 43% of British people believed the British empire was a good thing and only 19% a bad thing, with 25% believing it was neither. Furthermore, 44% felt that Britain’s history of colonialism was something to be proud of and only 19% felt it should be regretted. As to the statue of Cecil Rhodes at Oriel College, Oxford, only 11% thought it should be removed.

People from the most deprived areas are nearly eight times more likely to need help, according to the NHS. There were 36,235 alcohol-related hospital admissions last year - the equivalent of more than 100 a day. They involved 24,060 individual patients - up from the 35,376 admissions involving 23,656 patients the previous year. In our focus on the digital, have we lost our sense of what being human means? | Genevieve Bell | Opinion | The Guardian
MAKE OUR OWN FUTURE - And of course, there are bigger questions about the role of technology more broadly. In making the machines smarter, we have sacrificed a little something of ourselves – we run the risk of being reduced to data and the decisions it drives. I believe we are more than data, more than just intelligence. I worry that, in our current focus on the digital, we have lost some of our agency and some of our sense of what being human might mean. But I don’t believe this is inevitable or irreversible.

Psychologically, however, they are more vulnerable than Millennials were: Rates of teen depression and suicide have skyrocketed since 2011. It’s not an exaggeration to describe iGen as being on the brink of the worst mental-health crisis in decades. Much of this deterioration can be traced to their phones. [...] You might expect that teens spend so much time in these new spaces because it makes them happy, but most data suggest that it does not. [...] Teens who spend more time than average on screen activities are more likely to be unhappy, and those who spend more time than average on nonscreen activities are more likely to be happy. Plugging in through clothing: How children’s clothes influence perception and affective practices in day careThe Sociological Review - Elina Paju, 2017
Through the analysis of everyday practices of wearing clothing, clothes are seen as connectors. They enhance, diminish or expand possibilities for perception, action and affective practices in which children engage, thereby altering the children’s ways of being. The article proposes that the wearing of clothing plays a role in constituting selfhood outside of mere representations.

The left should just admit it: victims aren’t always good people | Deborah Orr | Opinion | The Guardian
[ see alain de botton analysis in one of the many videos, babies are a blank canvas, what happesn to them is a collective decision process, the environment in front of their eyes and as far back as westminster ] Human beings, despite the witless homilies of humanism, don’t all start out good and kind and perfect, only to have it driven out of them by a cruel world. Cherished children sometimes grow up to be antisocial, gazing with dead-eyed contempt at the people whose love they exploit. There can be no human utopia, because there will always be humans in it.

(297) Wer glücklich ist kauft nicht - Vortrag Prof. Hüther - YouTube
Denkmuster. Schwer heraus zu brechen! Kein kind komt als konsumer zur welt. Nacheifern wer erflogreich erscheint. Grunderfahrung Wachstum. Neugier. Dopamine.

- SPIEGEL ONLINE

Atul Singh: "The Global Rise of the Far Right" | Talks at Google - YouTube
people have to come to expect XYZ, but never materialised. literally // communities locally (suburb aspiration) have been broken down by consumerism materialism and 24/7 work / work being identity // & no certainty. thus you hang onto anyone who promises you past certainty, salvation, promised age. continuity in age of uncertainty and volatility. don't know if you have job next month. and gives you promises you collective identity. thus seeking authoritarian father figure. // & have to address - future (certainty, moral purpose), identity, inequality.

Swipe right for negative self perception, says research into Tinder users | Science | The Guardian
Tinder users were more dissatisfied with their bodies and more likely to objectify their appearances than those who did not use the app, study shows [...] “People are living in a surreal world, creating these unattainable ideals and expectations that no one can meet,” said lead author Jessica Strübel of the University of North Texas. “It’s creating a 24/7 constant need for impression and appearance management.”
