Agency tried to charge care homes £2,700 a shift for workers | Society | The Guardian
One of the country’s biggest providers of agency health workers has been accused of “profiteering” after trying to charge care homes up to £2,700 to supply a staff member for a single shift.

The Guardian can reveal that Newcross Healthcare, already exposed for fining workers £50 when they call in sick, quoted the sky-high charges in a price list sent out to homes looking for cover over Christmas.

Unintended consequences: when government health campaigns backfire | Life and style | The Guardian
Meanwhile a second research paper has spotted a flaw in the government’s “responsibility deal” with drinks makers. The industry agreed on reductions in alcohol levels by 2015, but while more low-alcohol products are on offer, things aren’t panning out as expected. Cambridge University researchers have scrutinised how low-alcohol drinks are being promoted by Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons and found that consumers are being prompted to buy these beverages in situations where they wouldn’t ordinarily hit the bottle. The drinks are presented as a perfect lunchtime treat, and as healthy options next to pictures of fruit. “Lower-strength wines and beers appear to be marketed not as substitutes for higher-strength products, but as ones that can be consumed on additional occasions with an added implication of healthiness,” wrote the researchers. Make that an “irresponsibility deal” then.

Finance trumps patients at every level – UK healthcare needs an inquiry | Aseem Malhotra | Healthcare Professionals Network | The Guardian
tl;dr Diet & Lifestyle changes of the nation in the short-, medium- and long-term term can help (substantially) save the NHS. // A full public inquiry on the scale of Chilcot into the Iraq war may ultimately be required to overhaul a system where at every level financial interest continues to trump what’s best for patients – not only to improve the quality of care, but to restore trust in medical research. Until then, NHS England, the BMA and the Department of Health must make it a national priority to emphasise to patients that less medicine and healthier lifestyles are the most important solutions to sustaining the NHS. // statistics use in medical research and patient selection and reporting issue. absolute risk v % of all patients. // Such statistical and health illiteracy, far from being the exception, is actually the norm. Sewage plants are leaking millions of tiny plastic beads into Britain's seas | Environment | The Guardian
Sewage plants are contributing to plastic pollution in the oceans with millions of tiny beads spilling into the seas around the UK, according to a new report.

Dozens of UK wastewater treatment plants use tiny plastic pellets, known as Bio-Beads, to filter chemical and organic contaminants from sewage, according to a study from the Cornish Plastic Pollution Coalition (CPPC).

The report found that many millions of these pellets, which are only about 3.5mm wide, have been spilled and ended up in the environment.

The author of the report, Claire Wallerstein, said once the Bio-Beads had been released they are hard to spot and almost impossible to remove – yet can cause significant harm to marine wildlife. // Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Falling unemployment is great for the economy? Try telling cleaners like Irene | Stefan Baskerville | Opinion | The Guardian
While UK unemployment fell by 75,000 in the three months to July, bringing the jobless rate down to 4.3%, these figures disguise a disturbing trend in the British labour market – one of falling wages, rising insecurity and false self-employment. At the New Economics Foundation, we carried out research that shows two in every five people employed in the UK are in “bad jobs” – work that doesn’t provide a secure, living wage.

NHS waiting times 'driving people to turn to private treatment' | Society | The Guardian
Growing numbers of patients are paying for private treatment to beat rationing and delays for treatment imposed by the cash-strapped NHS.

People who do not have health insurance are increasingly paying up to £14,880 for operations such as a hip or knee replacement or cataract removal, a report reveals.

Profit-driven hospital firms are experiencing 15 to 25% year-on-year rises in the number of uninsured “self-payers”, with the increase mainly driven by long waiting times to undergo non-urgent surgery in NHS hospitals. Patients are using their savings or taking out loans to pay for their treatment. [...] There has also been a rise in those paying for private cancer care in the wake of NHS England cutting the number of drugs it pays for under the Cancer Drugs Fund. “Widely publicised restrictions on NHS funding for cancer drugs is fuelling the growth in self-pay oncology,” notes the report, titled The Private Healthcare UK Self-Pay Market 2017. & https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/sep/11/the-guardian-view-on-the-nhs-crisis-private-treatment-is-not-the-answer

Supersize us: upselling is fuelling the obesity epidemic, warns report | Society | The Guardian
Consumers persuaded to scale up a meal or drink take on an extra 55% more calories on average – and a big annual weight gain, experts reveal [...] Public health experts have called on the government to take action against buy-one-get-one-free promotions in supermarkets, but upselling has gone under the radar. [...] “Obesity is the public health challenge of our generation and if not addressed urgently could tip over the point of no return,” said Shirley Cramer, chief executive of the RSPH. &! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-41129960

How the humble potato fuelled the rise of liberal capitalism
Enlightened eating

Today’s somewhat uneasy marriage of public health and individual choice is the result of new ideas that emerged during the Enlightenment. During the 18th century, states across Europe began to rethink the bases of national wealth and strength. At the heart of these new ideas was a new appreciation of what we would now call public health. Whereas in earlier centuries rulers wished to prevent famines that might cause public unrest, in the 18th century, politicians became increasingly convinced that national strength and economic prowess required more than an obedient population disinclined to riot.

Plans to ban leaseholds on new-build homes in England - BBC News
Traditionally houses have nearly always been sold as freehold properties, meaning the buyer owns the building and land it is built on outright. [leasholde enables to 1 artificially lower price w the intention to jack up later bc leasehold enables you to do that. ludicrous to think to actually buy house but not own the land it sits on. this leasehold practice is not even the tip of the iceberg of the housing crisis and bubble territory. the tip of the iceberg has to be regulation and consumer rights/protections. shoddy builds for outrageous amounts of money. anybody remember Grenfell tower? ] MPs have described the situation as a "national scandal" and the "PPI of the housebuilding industry".

Volkswagen, Daimler, BMW unter Kartellverdacht: Einmal Schrottpresse - SPIEGEL ONLINE

The most foolish NHS privatisation yet? | openDemocracy
For the third time since 2010, the government is planning to sell off NHS Professionals, the NHS in-house temporary staffing agency. This is the latest in a long series of gradual and covert moves to privatise our NHS. The obscurity in the privatisation process is no surprise. 84% of us want a publicly owned NHS. Those who want to place it in private hands know they can’t do so transparently.
