The Mexicans dying for a fizzy drink - BBC News
Mexicans consume more carbonated drinks per person than any other nation, and the country has one of the world's highest rates of childhood obesity. Two years ago the government introduced a tax on sugary drinks - but is it working? [...] So what do the big US brands make of Mexico's approach? Hank Cardello of the Obesity Solutions Initiative, an industry-funded lobby group in Washington DC, cracks open a can of diet ginger ale and tells us. "You have to look at ways of expanding the tool kit of solutions," he says. "The typical regulatory tool kit is tax, ban, limit, constrain - those kinds of anti-growth words, if you would. They're anathema to what the companies have to do. "We should ban the word 'should'. It's like a parent talking to a child. 'You should eat better, you should do this.' "No. When broccoli tastes like a cheeseburger, I'll eat more broccoli. You don't lecture to people to get them to change."

Why Cancer Research Has Stalled - T. Colin Campbell
But such conclusions fail to explain changes in the rates of cancer over time, or the wide variation in cancer prevalence between different human populations. They are flawed for a very fundamental reason: they assume that most types of cancer are caused by DNA mutations. This is the mutation theory of cancer. It serves as a fundamental explanation of cancer development and thus is a central focus of cancer research and clinical practice. [...] I disagree with this theory. I suggest that failing to question the mutation theory of cancer is the underlying scientific reason the War on Cancer is not being won. A nutritional theory of cancer .... [ who makes money on cancer treatment if there is rarely cancer amongst the population vs major cause of death in western society? ]

Part II: Is the Government fulfilling its role in the fight against cancer?
The scale of the challenge is apparent. I think we should be as bold and ambitious as possible: scientists, clinicians, patients, the general public and politicians all working together for a single goal: to eliminate cancer within a generation, and Britain at the forefront of this. [...] Patient experience has to be prioritised and this is difficult when NHS cancer services are under unprecedented pressure and the Government far too often provides contradictory messages. The Department of Health must provide the NHS with the resources and the long-term, holistic stability to allow Trusts to invest in state-of-the-art equipment. The NHS needs to emphasise prevention and early detection too, but the risk is that under greater financial and workforce pressure, cancer services will be forced to firefight.

Diabetes uses 10% of NHS drugs bill - BBC News
Diabetes now accounts for 10% of the NHS drugs bill in England, according to official figures. The Health and Social Care Information Centre report shows £869m was spent on drugs for the disease last year. It marks a sharp rise from the £514m being spent on the drugs a decade ago, when they accounted for just 6.6% of the prescriptions budget. The figures include drugs for both type-1 and type-2 diabetes, which affect 2.8 million people in England. It includes insulin, metformin and other anti-diabetic drugs. // &! Obesity is an incurable disease. So why is the government intent on punishing sufferers? | George Monbiot | Comment is free | The Guardian
Fat-shaming is worse than useless. David Cameron points his finger at the afflicted, but food manufacturers and advertisers are the real culprits. s overeating more addictive than crack cocaine? It’s hard to compare addiction rates, or to produce a clear definition that holds true across all substances and behaviours. But consider this crude contrast: of people who use crack cocaine, 10%-20% become addicted to it; across a nine-year study of 176,000 obese people, 98.3% of the men and 97.8% of the women failed to return to a healthy weight. Once extreme overeating begins, it appears to be almost impossible to stop. [...] seek out a range of highly palatable, energy-dense foods, of the kind with which we are now surrounded. [...] [ abuse food ] comfort eating [ handling stress, as is binge drinking on the Fridays and Weekends and your glass of wine every evening during the week ] [ IT IS ABOUT PREVENTION AND ENVIRONMENT HAS TO CHANGE! ] [ 10% NHS Budget is spend on diabetes treatment ]
