Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith QUITS Cabinet with vicious swipe at George Osborne over shambolic disability benefit cut U-turn Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3499499/Work-Pensions-Secretary-Iain-Duncan-Smith-QUITS-Cabin
[ we are all in this together ] [IDS PIP cuts] 'not defensible' alongside the tax breaks for the wealthy in this week's Budget. [...] He branded slash in benefits for the disabled as being 'indefensible.' IDS hit out at Osborne for lack of awareness and for letting the welfare system be 'salami-sliced' [...] 'I am unable to watch passively whilst certain policies are enacted in order to meet the fiscal self-imposed restraints that I believe are more and more perceived as distinctly political rather than in the national economic interest,' he wrote. The former Tory leader and standard-bearer for the Eurosceptic Right of the party admitted he wanted to cut benefits enjoyed by wealthy pensioners, but these plans were blocked by the Chancellor and the Prime Minister. [...] Mr Duncan Smith believed the Chancellor was too sly and devious in the way he went about balancing the nation’s books. [ Osborne wanted also to increase VAT Solar Panels ]

George Osborne warns of further spending cuts in Budget - BBC News
[ LOL! ] But recent figures showing the UK economy was smaller than expected meant savings must be found in his Budget statement on 17 March, he said. [...] Mr Osborne said he would rather look for extra cuts now than risk breaking his own manifesto commitment to achieve a surplus in the budget by the end of this Parliament. The chancellor did not completely rule out raising taxes in the event of a further slowdown in growth, but said that now was not the time for "significant" tax hikes. [...] I'm absolutely clear we've got to root our country in the principle that we live within our means and that we have economic security." [...] "whole purpose of our economic plan was to have a budget surplus. [...] we got big challenges at home to make the economy more productive even as more people get work. [ because having part of your budget in the property bubble is so productive ] [...] I will do what is required to keep our country safe and secure." [ NOT CHANGING PLANS ie U-TURN ]

Obama climate initiative: Supreme Court calls halt - BBC News
this is akin to taking plaster to fix a crumbling high rise: limiting the emissions and putting cost on emissions for one industry, seen as heavies polluter in public eye ... while livestock industry is biggest +50% of them all. // what is needed is a carbon tax that also includes environmental and ecological cost (ie deforestation, water pollution from pig waste - livestock farming) and if we are already there, what about antibiotic-resistance? A Marschall Plan for the future of earth and its occupants. A future for us. // If and import doesn't have a carbon tax, tariffs have to be enacted on imports based on their damage to environment, ecology and carbon emissions. ... // economic damage & public health problems and health inequality in the future is deferred taxation for the next generation // Obama isn't bold enough. Hawking: Humans at risk of lethal 'own goal' - BBC News
Humanity is at risk from a series of dangers of our own making, according to Prof Stephen Hawking. Nuclear war, global warming and genetically-engineered viruses are among the scenarios which he singles out. And he says that further progress in science and technology will create "new ways things can go wrong". Prof Hawking is giving this year's BBC Reith Lectures, which explore research into black holes, and his warning came in answer to audience questions. He says that assuming humanity eventually establishes colonies on other worlds, it will be able to survive. "Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next thousand or ten thousand years. [...] But he also said that future generations of researchers should be aware of how scientific and technological progress is changing the world, and to help the wider public understand it. //&! bit.ly/1RwS7yA

UK's coal plants to be phased out within 10 years - BBC News
[How can gas be central if it has to be shipped from Russia & else?! - bbc.in/1WZQj4D ] UKs remaining coal-fired power stations will be shut by 2025 with their use restricted by 2023, Energy Secretary Amber Rudd has proposed. Ms Rudd wants more gas-fired stations to be built since relying on "polluting" coal is "perverse". Working-class Americans feel screwed. I heard it across the entire country | US news | The Guardian
Donald Trump has exposed the opportunity gulf between those who make policy and those who live it – turning immigrants into scapegoats in the process [...] The disappointment, although often wrapped in anger over immigration, is at its core about diminished opportunity. It is consistent with the economic reality that has persisted over the last three decades: except for the very rich, Americans haven’t seen their wealth increase. The people I talked to are not entirely wrong; their particular job prospects and their particular wealth have been harmed. [...] The angry are mostly people who work with their hands, who feel stuck in a vise tightening from two sides: there is a greater number of people looking for the same jobs and there are fewer jobs available, since many of these jobs having moved overseas.

// overuse of antibiotics in "industrial animal production."

BBC News - UK's oil, coal and gas 'gone in five years'
"Britain has just 5.2 years of oil." Aberdeen companies (whole region) got 2 pivot 2 off-shore windfarm tech and maintenance and tidal wave technology [clean tech - clean energy technology]. PLUS there is the decommissioning business, decommissioning of oil and gas platforms. Plus the option of building/solidifying itself as knowledge and skill hub for global oil and gas business - the mobile creative / skill-based worker. Otherwise it could turn sour quiet quickly like the areas where the coal mines and other post-heavy industry locations in the UK were - them being still smudge of economic inactivity on UK's economic landscape and economic history. "Ministers are hoping that enough shale gas - extracted by fracking - will be obtained to make a difference, the BBC's environment analyst Roger Harrabin says." The gas amount from fracking in UK is negligible, not comparable to USA even if accounted 4 landmass size & energy usage/capita. + http://econ.st/1n8oyAZ http://econ.st/1gdiesV

BBC Two - Mind the Gap: London v the Rest
Polarising UK. (1) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Gateway (Port is a 50 year bet that London and surroundings will thrive further. Keeping Supply chains as tight as possible.) Most great careers are in the City. 58% of jobs need/have graduate qualification. City/London networking economics. Economies of Agglomeration. Proximity fuels productivity. + Connection to the world of business. Once you've attracted good neighbours, it attracts more people and more businesses to be there too. Self-fulfilling, once you reach critical mass, Tipping Point. Cotton Mills in the 19th century were build where the cotton planted. Corporations want to locate parts of their business were the resources are - the talent pool. And for data centres, where cheap energy is. // UK is now a two speed economy. London followed by the other big cities, followed by the rest of UK, rural UK. // There is no formula of success that other cities less prosperous could copy from London. It evolves. Bottom up growth.
