Clouds gather over solar power after golden years of success
After a day in which Britain generated more power from the sun than from coal for the first time, the industry should be rejoicing. But the mood is fearful [...] But over the last year both the RO and FiT support mechanisms have been either removed or wound dramatically further down – with the government arguing the industry should largely be fending for itself while bill payers should be spared unnecessary cost. Britain heading for power cuts next winter, say 60 local authorities | Business | The Guardian
bit.ly/1TOwjhT &! A group representing 60 local authorities has warned that recent closures of large power stations have left Britain heading for power cuts next winter, despite assurances to the contrary from the government. [...] National Grid needed to act immediately to fill the supply gap by sending out new contracts for at least 2,500 megawatts (MW) of additional generating capacity – enough to power 2.5m homes. The alliance wants ministers to reconsider the level of carbon taxes, saying this is one of the key reasons why so many coal-fired power stations are being shut down early. [...] In recent years, coal, nuclear and gas-fired plants have been shut because of low prices, high operating costs or old age. Windfarms have been erected and new nuclear facilities promised but energy companies say gas plants cannot be built without higher subsidies. //&! bit.ly/1MpvhlE - UK doesn not meet 15% of EU renewables target, but cuts subsidies for renewables, duh! &! bit.ly/1sL8Kty

George Osborne warns of further spending cuts in Budget - BBC News
[ LOL! ] But recent figures showing the UK economy was smaller than expected meant savings must be found in his Budget statement on 17 March, he said. [...] Mr Osborne said he would rather look for extra cuts now than risk breaking his own manifesto commitment to achieve a surplus in the budget by the end of this Parliament. The chancellor did not completely rule out raising taxes in the event of a further slowdown in growth, but said that now was not the time for "significant" tax hikes. [...] I'm absolutely clear we've got to root our country in the principle that we live within our means and that we have economic security." [...] "whole purpose of our economic plan was to have a budget surplus. [...] we got big challenges at home to make the economy more productive even as more people get work. The lights are going out for solar energy
Back in December, when most people were focussed on Christmas and not renewable subsidies, the government quietly published their decision to cut Feed-in Tariffs for industries such as solar, wind and hydropower by a staggering 65 per cent. Included in the small print was analysis which showed a possible 19,000 job losses, mostly in solar, which would see that industry shrink to under half its size. [...] Instead the government is thinking short-term, and our economy will suffer. For a party that wants people to think of it as economically competent, this is an incredibly bad move.

Hitachi boss issues warning over Wylfa subsidy deal - BBC News
[ giving extortionate (for consumer) strike prices, while cutting renewable feed in tariff 95% and 500m subsidies for Oil/Aberdeen ] The head of the company behind a new £8bn nuclear power station on Anglesey has warned it may walk away from the project if a subsidy deal with the UK government cannot be reached. Hitachi chairman Hiroaki Nakanishi told the Telegraph he voiced concerns about Wylfa Newydd's expected cost to Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond. It followed problems a rival faced for the Hinkley Point plant in Somerset. The UK government said it wants low-cost nuclear power. Hitachi owns Horizon Nuclear Power which is behind the plans to build the new power plant, which could be operational by the early 2020s. Horizon is in talks with the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) on issues such as the strike price, which will be key to attracting additional finance.

German plasma success raises nuclear fusion hopes - BBC News
A German nuclear fusion experiment has produced a special super-hot gas which scientists hope will eventually lead to clean, cheap energy. [...] Physicists are in a worldwide race to create stable fusion devices that could not only mimic the Sun but release abundant energy, without the volumes of toxic waste generated by nuclear fission - the splitting of the atom. [...] The project began nine years ago and has cost 1bn euros (£720m; $1.1bn) so far. The EU's main nuclear fusion project is called Iter, at Cadarache, in the south of France. But it will not be fired up until the 2020s. It is controversial, having already cost more than €10bn. [...] Scientists have been working on nuclear fusion for more than 50 years but the extreme temperatures involved and the difficulty of controlling plasmas mean progress is slow.

It is consistent with the economic reality that has persisted over the last three decades: except for the very rich, Americans haven’t seen their wealth increase. The people I talked to are not entirely wrong; their particular job prospects and their particular wealth have been harmed. [...] The angry are mostly people who work with their hands, who feel stuck in a vise tightening from two sides: there is a greater number of people looking for the same jobs and there are fewer jobs available, since many of these jobs having moved overseas.

U.K. ‘Emergency’ Surveillance Law Ruled Unlawful By High Court | TechCrunch
In a high profile win for civil liberties in the U.K., surveillance legislation rushed through the national parliament in a matter of days last year has today been declared unlawful under European Human Rights law. Two MPs, Tom Watson (Labour) and David Davis (Conservative), along with civil rights campaign group Liberty, took the government to the High Court last month, challenging the Data Retention and Investigatory Powers Act (DRIPA) on privacy and data protection grounds. Today the High Court agreed with their challenge. [...] the European Court of Justice ruling that had, months earlier, struck down EU data retention powers as disproportionate. PRESSURE is mounting on ministers to take action on Police Scotland amid further criticism of the force over claims it illegally spied on a journalist to uncover sources. Law changed to allow GCHQ hacking ... just as GCHQ hauled into court for hacking • The Register

The NEW COLD WAR. see also 2015 BND affair with selectors. ] Government legislation to exempt GCHQ from prosecution on charges of illegal hacking has been passed and come into effect – apparently torpedoing an ongoing claim against the surveillance agency being heard by the Investigatory Powers Tribunal. Last July, a coalition of internet service providers and international organisations teamed up with Privacy International to take legal action against GCHQ. Their claim, which arrived in court today, has been hobbled by what the privacy warriors said was the revelation that the government had quietly ushered through legislation amending the Computer Misuse Act to exempt GCHQ and law enforcement from prosecution, and did so while the case was ongoing.

The NSA Reportedly Stole Millions Of SIM Encryption Keys To Gather Private Data | TechCrunch
The American National Security Agency (NSA), and the British Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), similar clandestine intelligence agencies, stole SIM card encryption keys from a manufacturer, allowing the groups to decrypt global cellular communications data. [...] “NSA and GCHQ basically have the keys to decyrpting mobile communications anywhere in the world, even without the participation of local communication carriers (which, even if not much, acts as some check on intelligence agency behavior). It’s the equivalent of these agencies having printed doorkeys for the front doors to millions or even billions of homes around the world, just in case they one day decided they needed to get in. Frankly, people should have no faith in the security of global mobile communications.” >> CLU’s Christopher Soghoian - "Steal millions of crypto keys and then complain publicly that encryption is a problem. President Obama Is Waging a War on Hackers | WIRED
war on whistleblower and investigative journalism. // "In next week’s State of the Union address, President Obama will propose new laws against hacking that could make either retweeting or clicking on the above (fictional) link illegal. UK government asks: How's our hacking?
UK gov releases equipment interference guidelines for spy & law enforcement agencies; the guidelines never calls it hacking but 'interference activities; Deputy Director @ Privacy International Eric King (@e3i5) says it's the UK gov's attempt to grant itself some of the most intrusive powers. // "This is the first time that the agencies have admitted that they are in the hacking business," Eric King, the deputy director of London-based digital rights watchdog Privacy International, told Mashable. King said that it amounts to a belated attempt to give these activities a scrap of legal basis, in the face of a lawsuit filed by his group last year, which challenged the legality of the UK intelligence service GCHQ's hacking activities, revealed by Edward Snowden documents. For King, the document is basically an attempt by the UK government to grant itself "some of the most invasive and intrusive" powers it has at its disposal.

Here’s how reporters are reacting to Snowden’s revelations | PandoDaily
The global surveillance programs revealed by Edward Snowden have caused journalists to change how they operate, question what the government knows about them, and consider abandoning investigative reporting, according to a survey from the Pew Research Center. A significant number of the journalists surveyed said they had changed their behavior, whether it’s how they store sensitive files (49 percent), how they communicate with other journalists (29 percent), whether they’ve reached out to a source (13 percent), or pursued a specific story (2 percent). Many are also convinced the government is gathering information about them. Some 64 percent of journalists believed intelligence agencies had “probably collected data” about them. (The other 36 percent, as “InfoSec Taylor Swift” joked, must not read the news.)

The Responsive Enterprise: Embracing the Hacker Way - ACM Queue
The "Seven Aspects of our Culture," as described in a Netflix slide presentation (Values are what we Value; High Performance; Freedom and Responsibility; Context, not Control; Highly Aligned, Loosely Coupled; Pay Top of Market; and Promotions and Development) provides a crisp formulation of people-management values for a software-centric enterprise.4 Here is our take on four of Netflix's seven core values: [...] No company embodies the hacker culture better than Facebook, and CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg explained the idea eloquently in his letter to investors when Facebook filed for its IPO: "Hacker culture is also extremely open and meritocratic. Hackers believe that the best idea and implementation should always win—not the person who is best at lobbying for an idea or the person who manages the most people."10

Middelhoff-Prozess: Das Urteil geht uns alle an - SPIEGEL ONLINE
[ Power Corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

US Spy Programs May Break the Internet if Not Reformed, Google Leader Says | WIRED
Until the US recognizes and restores the fundamental right of ownership you have in your data, he continued, the U.S. cannot hope to rebuild trust lost through the NSA’s widespread surveillance programs. This stance flies in the face of what we expect from internet companies these days, many of whom tend to act as if they own the content we create. [...] COMPANIES HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO TAKE THE STEPS THAT APPLE AND OTHERS WERE TAKING TO STRENGTHEN THE SECURITY OF CUSTOMER DATA, AND THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD GET USED TO IT.

The rise of robot scheduling is a nightmare for low-wage workers - Quartz
The Times story points at a larger truth: Advances in management and workplace technology all have essentially one goal, to get more out of employees at lower cost. And in the quest for efficiency, companies often forget they’re dealing with people. + Kantor offers as an example the heartbreaking chronicle of a woman named Janette Navarro, and her efforts to raise her young son while working at Starbucks under this scheduling system. She often found out about her work hours with only a few days notice, requiring panicked adjustments to take care of her son and the family’s finances. She was sometimes asked to “clopen” her store (work till closing at 11pm and return at 4am to open it). The job required constant scrambling and caused tension with family members she frequently needed to beg for help to keep an eye on her son. ... She wasn’t alone.

Killing the Messenger at Mozilla, by Tim Chevalier | Model View Culture
The tech industry has a hero problem, and during my time there, Mozilla was no exception. Famously, Eich developed the JavaScript language in ten days, in order to meet a Netscape release deadline. This is a textbook example of how tech valorizes individual "heroes", always male, who can put in intense effort on a problem over a short period of time but not work with others on a solution in the long term. I have no doubt that Eich's work on JavaScript was solid, but I also see no reason to think that he was the only person who could have done the same thing. In fact, there are probably people who could have done better, but were not accorded the privileges in life needed for doing so. As far as I'm aware, Eich himself has maintained a humble attitude about his achievements, but the same can't be said of his fans. [...] Tacit acceptance of silencing and of abuse of power runs throughout our culture, but that doesn't make it okay in the specific instance of tech culture. [... >>]

On that gloomy note, I leave you by recommending Joe Nocera's New York Times article, Sheila Bair’s Bank Shot. The reality is that no matter what measures regulators implement to reign in banks, the rottenness of the world always prevails.
