Hillary Clinton's book has a clear message: don't blame me | Thomas Frank | Opinion | The Guardian
She seems to have been almost totally unprepared for the outburst of populist anger that characterized 2016, an outburst that came under half a dozen different guises: trade, outsourcing, immigration, opiates, deindustrialization, and the recent spectacle of Wall Street criminals getting bailed out. It wasn’t the issues that mattered so much as the outrage, and Donald Trump put himself in front of it. Clinton couldn’t. [...] But by and large, Clinton’s efforts to understand populism always get short-circuited, probably because taking it seriously might lead one to conclude that working people have a legitimate beef with her and the Democratic party. &! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-41244474 &! https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/sep/12/hillary-clinton-supporters-memoir-book

How the Tory election machine fell apart | Politics | The Guardian
Fiona Hill Nick Timothy Lynton Crosby // Tim Bale, a historian of the party and professor of politics at the University of London, argues that the Tories have gradually stopped presenting voters with an appealing vision of Britain. “In the 80s, they had a good balance of negativity and positivity,” he says. This meant exploiting the flaws of Labour leaders such as Michael Foot and Neil Kinnock while also promising a society of entrepreneurs and mass property ownership, an attractive idea in an era of increasing materialism. Yet at the 1992 election, under Thatcher’s less secure successor, John Major, this started to change. “He didn’t want a negative campaign,” says Bale, “but he was persuaded.” When the Conservatives won the election unexpectedly, victory was attributed by many Tories – and commentators and Labour politicians – to a single crude-but-effective Conservative campaign phrase: “Labour’s Tax Bombshell.”

"We believe we are experiencing a new trend in the threat we face as terrorism breeds terrorism," she said.
Mrs May said the UK's counter-terrorism strategy would be reviewed, as she promised to step up efforts to combat Islamist ideology and work with other countries to prevent the internet being a "safe space" for terrorists.
She said there was "too much tolerance of extremism in our country" and while it would involve "some difficult and embarrassing conversations", that must change. [...] Some analysts see this as a last desperate bid by IS to its supporters, following multiple setbacks in the Middle East where its self-proclaimed caliphate is shrinking fast. However, the ideology of IS is likely to survive those defeats and will continue to fuel terrorist attacks around the world. [...] With three attacks in close proximity, terrorism against soft targets is beginning to feel, to some people, like the new normal.
The brutal reality is that this kind of threat is absolutely typical of what jihadists sought to achieve in all their attacks across Europe.

Donald Trump, Marine Le Pen: Wie Wirtschaftskrisen Populisten helfen - Kolumne - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Why Theresa May is a true heir to Richard Nixon | Aditya Chakrabortty | Opinion | The Guardian
Trump wasn’t playing politics: he was prosecuting a culture war – and a culture war is anti-politics. [...] First came her speech about how “the country is coming together”, even while her political opponents were not. Her cheerleaders were in the press the next day, baying for “Blue murder” and for her to “Crush the saboteurs”. I watched all this from the US; and in the land where Democrats are now routinely labelled “treasonous” it all sounded eerily familiar: us v them; the people v Westminster; leavers v remainers. [...] “forged a public language that promised mastery of the strange new angers, anxieties, and resentments wracking the nation”. [...] Nixon appealed to the “silent majority”. Passport checks for patients is an abandonment of NHS principles | Zoe Stewart | Opinion | The Guardian
Dena Bryant, a lifelong resident of Grantham, had her eligibility for care at her local hospital questioned by a nurse who justified her questioning because Bryant was “not white” and did not “look English”.

The reality is that these policies represent yet another instance of the government attempting to blame migrants for the devastating impact of their austerity agenda. [...] The relationship between the doctor or health professional and a patient relies on respect and trust. A policy that demands we verify eligibility and report ineligible patients prioritises money over care, and jeopardises the relationship between a patient and their care provider.

How to Listen to Donald Trump Every Day for Years - The New York Times
We have to stop thinking that what President Trump says has any deeper significance [...] One major concern: His barking style lends itself to expressing casual hatred too easily. Also, Mr. Obama had much less room to be “authentic.” Mr. Trump has the privilege of talking as he pleases with no concern for how he sounds. He can string his impressions together as they come, while a black politician who sounds too “street” gets only so far. (Hillary Clinton, too, was boxed in, by gender. If she had used traits associated with the casual speech of women she would have been branded as trivial.) // language and bar for black presidents much higher - https://youtu.be/65I5aEYiaIs

May can think big all she likes. Britain’s about to find out just how small it is | Rafael Behr | Opinion | The Guardian
The UK struggles to see itself in perspective because it is richer and more powerful than most countries, yet so much less influential than it used to be. [...] May’s speech on Tuesday was meant to be a beacon illuminating Britain’s future outside the EU. But, coming days before Trump’s inauguration, it should be read also as an unwitting requiem for the global order that is passing away. It imagined a place where the contours of power are neatly defined and stable, where Britain has freedom to choose its friends and decide its status in the world. [...] Our interests matter, but probably not that much more than Belgian interests currently matter in Whitehall. [ EU a political project first ... ] It’s a question of perspective. For decades Britain has struggled to get a comfortable sense of its scale relative to the rest of the world. We are about to find out how big – or small – we really are.

UK at risk of Brexit ‘catastrophe’ warns Canadian trade expert | Politics | The Guardian
Former EU ambassador Sir Ivan Rogers ‘absolutely right to say replacement deal may take a decade to sort out’ - Britain risks a “catastrophic” Brexit because the government is so dismissive of the concerns of trade experts, according to one of the figures behind the EU-Canada trade deal which took a decade to negotiate. Writing in the Observer, Jason Langrish – one of Canada’s authorities in the field – says the UK’s former ambassador to the EU, Sir Ivan Rogers, who resigned last week and quit the civil service, was absolutely right to say that a British deal could also take a decade to strike. - http://bit.ly/2jugouM

How the Brexit vote unleashed a mutiny against the old order | Politics | The Guardian
But the revolution that had delivered Brexit, driven in large part by white working-class votes, was sweeping all before it in the most unpredictable way – careers and ambitions, along with what had seemed the safest of assumptions. The aftershocks of the referendum were wreaking havoc with the old system. //&! How bad can Brexit be if it has made bankers think about inequality? [...] Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML) immediately called Brexit the “biggest electoral riposte yet to [the] age of inequality”. Investment group Pimco, which manages $1.5 trillion of bonds, warned clients about the “battle against inequality”. Meanwhile French giant Axa (with €666bn under its belt) concluded: “UK voters have taken their frustrations about income inequality out on the EU.” - http://bit.ly/29gYh3T //&! decades long neglect from Westminster, Whitehall, No Representation - bit.ly/29lZVDn & bit.ly/29ey7jL

A less than United Kingdom
It has been striking to me how in one place almost everybody expressed genuine bewilderment that anyone would consider anything but a vote to leave, and in another neighbourhood they are quite baffled as to why people wouldn't be desperate to remain. [...] Anti-London sentiment [...] With Scotland voting overall to remain, and a similar picture in Northern Ireland, there will be powerful pressures upon the fabric of the UK. This country finds itself having to deal with an existential crisis. [...] For many English voters, this was an opportunity to wave the flag of St George and restore a sense of national pride. Many resented what they saw as special treatment for other parts of the UK, particularly Scotland. In some respects, the vote for Brexit was a vote for English nationalism.

Man removed from UK flight over 'prayer' message on phone | UK news | The Guardian
The Nigerian-born Christian believes the passenger next to him assumed he was a Muslim and jumped to the conclusion that he may be a terrorist. “That guy doesn’t know me and within two minutes he’s judging me,” he told the Guardian. “Even if I was a Muslim, it was pretty unfair the way I was treated. I don’t think anyone, irrespective of their religion should be treated in such a way. “If we keep on giving into this kind of bigotry and irrational fear, I dare say that the terrorists will have achieved their aim.” [...] But he now fears he is on a terrorist watchlist because when he returned the next day from his business trip, the electronic passport gate did not let him through and he had to speak to an immigration officer before proceeding. “Someone felt I was a terrorist because they saw the word ‘prayer’ on my phone and now I stand in uncertainty about my freedom of movement in and out of the United Kingdom,” he said.
