Superbugs are on track to kill 10 million people by 2050 if things don’t change—fast
april 2016 by asterisk2a
[under reported ] Today, 23,000 Americans die each year from infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Across the world, the estimated annual mortality rate is 700,000. If these trends continue, by 2050, 10 million people globally will die each year, as the potent diseases of previous centuries return to their old force, according to the Review on Antimicrobial Resistance. In 2012, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported an estimated 450,000 new cases of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. The emergence of multiple drug-resistant pneumonia and E. coli bacteria strains are predicted to contribute significantly to increased mortalities due to their ability to spread rapidly through populations.

Is the NHS in England stuck with soaring demand?
april 2016 by asterisk2a
service struggling to keep up with demand. [...] ambulance response times, delays in A&E, and treatment for cancer - have been missed. All this against a background of increased attendances, more referrals & GPs being busier than ever. So is the NHS is stuck in a never-ending cycle of soaring demand? The kitchen at Stanborough Lodge care home in Welwyn Garden City is part of the NHS frontline in the fight to ease the strain on hospitals. [...] Staff and residents of care homes are being taught to cook nutritious foods [...] "And I think we're going to have to see the NHS pull its finger out a bit in terms of making those investments." Whatever differences there may be about why the NHS is so stretched, there is no denying that with money so tight and performance slipping on many fronts, time to find a solution is running out. //&! bbc.in/23xX0yf &! bbc.in/1S95lh1 [...] system facing both inexorably increasing patient numbers and severe financial strain."

Investors urge fast food and pub chains to act to reduce farm antibiotics
april 2016 by asterisk2a
A group of powerful City investors who together control more than $1tn in assets have written to leading fast food, pub and restaurant chains urging them to take immediate action to reduce antibiotic use in their meat and poultry supply chains. [...] UK human campylobacter infections have become more resistant to antibiotic treatment. Percentage of human campylobacter cases tested that showed some degree of resistance to the antibiotic ciprofloxacin - approaches 50%!!! [...] Of the 17,332 human campylobacter cases tested in 2015 for resistance to ciprofloxacin, 48% had some degree of resistance to the drug. In 2005, this figure was 30%.

Government planning to repeal animal welfare codes
march 2016 by asterisk2a
Poultry industry to oversee chicken-farming standards as ministers move to create industry-led deregulation. Conservative ministers are planning to repeal an array of official guidance on animal welfare standards, starting with a move to put the code on chicken-farming into the hands of the poultry industry.
Liz Truss, the environment secretary, is overseeing moves to scrap the statutory codes on farm animal welfare and move to an “industry-led” guidance as part of her department’s deregulatory agenda. [ so industry funds its own regulatory body, lol! ] [...] Other sectors that could get control of their own guidance include the cattle, sheep and pig farming industries. //&! Poultry deregulation plans risk bringing back dark days of food scares. New UK food poisoning figures published | Food Standards Agency
march 2016 by asterisk2a
There are more than 500,000 cases of food poisoning a year from known pathogens. This figure would more than double if it included food poisoning cases from unknown pathogens.
Campylobacter was the most common foodborne pathogen, with about 280,000 cases every year. [...] Poultry meat was the food linked to the most cases of food poisoning, with an estimated 244,000 cases every year [... Obama climate initiative: Supreme Court calls halt - BBC News
february 2016 by asterisk2a
this is akin to taking plaster to fix a crumbling high rise: limiting the emissions and putting cost on emissions for one industry, seen as heavies polluter in public eye ... while livestock industry is biggest +50% of them all. // what is needed is a carbon tax that also includes environmental and ecological cost (ie deforestation, water pollution from pig waste - livestock farming) and if we are already there, what about antibiotic-resistance? A Marschall Plan for the future of earth and its occupants. A future for us. // If and import doesn't have a carbon tax, tariffs have to be enacted on imports based on their damage to environment, ecology and carbon emissions. ... // economic damage & public health problems and health inequality in the future is deferred taxation for the next generation // Obama isn't bold enough. Not Utopian enough.

Krebs: So lässt sich das Risiko verringern - SPIEGEL ONLINE
february 2016 by asterisk2a
'Almost too late': fears of global superbug crisis in wake of antibiotic misuse | Society | The Guardian
december 2015 by asterisk2a
Despite European Union regulations aiming to cut back on the unnecessary use of antibiotics, Dr Brown believes it will take more than just legislation to tackle the superbug crisis. Market forces will need to be compelled to cut usage, perhaps when prompted by a shift in public opinion, he said. “Those with a vested interest find ways around legislation. So, in addition to public policy we will need also the power of market forces,” he added. “When the public start demanding meat that has not seen antibiotics - because they understand that the meat may contain antibiotic resistant bacteria - only then will real progress be made. We need education about the threat.”

Bacteria that resist 'last antibiotic' found in UK - BBC News
december 2015 by asterisk2a
[ over 80% of antibiotic use - livestock farming. also use of colistin. self-regulated. ] Bacteria that resist the most common antibiotic of last resort - colistin - have been discovered in the UK. Officials say the threat to human health is low, but is under ongoing review. Scientists warned the world was on the cusp of a post-antibiotic era when such resistance was discovered in China last month. Now checks have discovered the same resistance on three farms and in samples of human infections. [...] Colistin-resistance was discovered in fifteen of them, including samples of Salmonella and E. Coli. [...] The DNA that gives bacteria resistance to colistin - the mcr-1 gene - can spread rapidly between species. The concern is that colistin-resistance will now find its way into other superbugs to create infections that doctors cannot treat. //&! youtu.be/M2xZBngTIas //&! bit.ly/1O5oHWa //&! bit.ly/1MW3FYW //&! bbc.in/1PkB6G9 //&! 50-50 chance to salvage situation - bit.ly/1Zmx8Qg

Behörde entdeckt Mineralölspuren in Adventskalendern - SPIEGEL ONLINE
december 2015 by asterisk2a
[ If you have the money, you can silence your critics.

Mobbing-Klage gegen Nestlé: Unappetitliche Einblicke - SPIEGEL ONLINE
december 2015 by asterisk2a
Man died with 'tapeworm tumours' - BBC News
november 2015 by asterisk2a
Up to 75 million people have an H. nana infection at any one time. Doctors believe that worm-cancer is rare, but know many cases could be going undiagnosed. The US Centers for Disease Control said hand washing and cooking raw vegetables was the best way to prevent infection. // https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hymenolepis_nana //&! http://www.cdc.gov/parasites/hymenolepis/faqs.html - How did I get infected? One becomes infected by accidentally ingesting dwarf tapeworm eggs. This can happen by ingesting fecally contaminated foods or water, by touching your mouth with contaminated fingers, or by ingesting contaminated soil.

GMO in Fodder aka animal feed, livestock feed. and Fodder also can contain ground up meat waste from other animals (see “mad cow” disease instance). farmed fish eating ground up male chicken. Or in EU pig fodder (Schweinefutter) containing too high toxin called dioxin ( http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs225/en/ ). Or in other instance added hormones to fatten pigs quicker that show up in the meat and are thus hormones that people ingest unkowingly, low-dose long-time, ... // in a commercialised profit driven environment, nothing is wasted. Immune clue to preventing schizophrenia - BBC News
october 2015 by asterisk2a
[ does diet and epigentics play a role, science knows that risk is higher if you have family case. big pharma would not be amused to hear that schizophrenic schizophrenia episodes could be reduced with an anti-inflammatory diet and active lifestyle. and anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID's) do not work at the same rate and have side effects (lower efficacy) ] Brain scans found an overactive immune system in patients as well as in those at high risk of schizophrenia. The UK Medical Research Council team wants to test anti-inflammatory drugs to treat or even prevent the disease. [...] There has been mounting evidence that the immune system and inflammation play a key role in schizophrenia and other psychiatric conditions. //&! http://nutritionfacts.org/?s=schizo >> ie &! http://nutritionfacts.org/video/poultry-exposure-and-neurological-disease/ - Poultry workers ...

Two-year-old children referred to NHS Grampian for being overweight - Press and Journal
october 2015 by asterisk2a
Children as young as two have been referred to health officials for being overweight. New figures released by NHS Grampian have revealed that 70 youngsters aged 15 and under have been referred to weight management programmes this year. In 2014, 132 children were sent invitations – eleven of whom were as young as two. The highest number of referrals occurred in 2012, when 201 were invited. Nutrition expert Dr Alex Johnstone, of Aberdeen University’s Rowett Institute, said the figures mirrored a national trend in obesity which showed childhood obesity is declining. [...] NHS Grampian has already spent more money putting kids on the programme this year than last. The scheme involves healthcare professionals working with families to encourage healthier lifestyles.

WHO | A call for higher taxes on tobacco
october 2015 by asterisk2a
Dr Margaret Chan and Mike Bloomberg call for higher taxes on tobacco. The evidence is clear: raising tobacco taxes cuts usage, encourages smokers to quit and discourages young people from picking up the habit in the first place. The United Nations ought to encourage countries to raise tobacco taxes to support the world’s Sustainable Development Goals and reduce tobacco use.

[...] “Our survey has shown that levels of campylobacter on UK chickens are too high, regardless of whether they are organic, free-range, or conventionally produced,” [...] The agency now names and shames retailers. The worst offender in 2014-15 was Asda, with 80% of chickens contaminated, 30% heavily so, and 12% of packaging contaminated. However, no major retailers came out well. [...] Chicken contamination with campylobacter accounts for about four in five cases of the most common form of food poisoning. Although the bacteria can be killed through cooking, they make about 280,000 people in the UK sick each year, with thousands needing hospital treatment, and about 100 people a year dying. &! bit.ly/1ODVRts < nutritionfacts.org food poisoning //&! wash hands after supermarket - bit.ly/1KDAVij

BBC News - The fatal attraction of lead
october 2014 by asterisk2a
The Romans boiled concentrated grape juice down in lead pots into a syrup that helped extend the life of wines. Why lead pots? According to the winemaker Columella, "brass vessels give off copper rust, which has an unpleasant flavour." The outcome is clear from bones in ancient Roman cemeteries, which contain lead levels more than three times the modern safe limit recommended by the World Health Organization. [...] Whether this contributed to the apparent madness of emperors such as Caligula and Nero, and the eventual collapse of the Empire remains a contentious question among classical scholars.
