Scale Google loves scale. It shutters products with user numbers that many companies would kill for (remember Reader?) because they don’t reach the billion-plus of its flagships. Chrome primarily lives on Chromebook devices. Gartner estimates Google will ship 7.9 million devices this year. Android, Google recently announced, crossed 1.4 billion users. Very different scale. Despite some traction, Chromebooks are still a tiny slice of the market, and Google has faced difficulty corralling developers to build apps for it. It hasn’t had the same problem with Android. [...] Google has manically reiterated that it does, in fact, have a cohesive plan for mobile. A chief Android distinction from Chrome is that it is built for mobile behavior. A vote for Android is, in some ways, a tacit admission that Google must devote its attention to the devices on which it lives.

In this light, incidentally, Satya Nadella's suggestion that Xbox is no longer core was as interesting as the end of 'Windows Everywhere' (which I discussed here). Microsoft has been working on adding computing to TV since before phones even had screens. But it turns out that it's the smartphone, not the TV, that's  the centre of the experience, and the TV is dumb glass just as the mobile network is a dumb pipe.

context is god, when content is king. Google was late to add contextual result - searching on phone - say a relevant app to said search query. Next would be to monetize via bid/paid placement (first shown) to query X like in Desktop search. PS Google also rolled out an update to its pagerank that includes if ur page is mobile friendly (responsive) and will be higher ranked to a comparable site that is not.

No, Really, the PC Is Dying and It's Not Coming Back | WIRED
[ some VC's already talked about using mobile CPU's for future data centres as the marginal cost of producing mobile processors is lower than PC CPU's (much lower production vs high production output of mobile CPU's) ... and as all the processing power is shifted and engineered via sw to the data center to compute instead on the client (ie see thin client's at work) ] As Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple all follow suit in spending unprecedented amounts on data centers, that can’t be all bad for Intel, which makes many of the chips on which those data centers run. But it shows just how much the power dynamic has shifted. It’s not the companies that make the basic components that run computers—especially PCs—that have the power anymore. It’s the companies that make the things with which users—especially mobile users—interact that are building and profiting off tech’s future.

To build e-commerce of that type, there are years of losses ahead. There was no possibility at that time in sight, to fund that with European VC's. Zalando raised in its lifetime till the IPO ~500m. That was around the same amount EU VC's handed out in 2008. They started 2007 w 20 ppl. EU VC's handouts are about 2% of SV VC's handout per year in aggregate. Capital intensive companies out of EU (Germany) are nearly impossible to pull off. Mittelstand/SME/Dude&Dudette businesses are ok with peanut investments/savings/bank credit and focusing on making it at nearly break even in the first year. That is not the mantra in SV. SV = go big or go home, once you got real traction. Reach for the sky. Biz (Start-ups) fail when you run out of money before you found traction.
