Can Liverpool's new hospital make the whole city healthier – and wealthier? | Cities | The Guardian
Jackson also says the trust is working hard to reduce the length of time patients – especially older people – will stay in the hospital. In part by helping people to stay at home for longer and return home more quickly. “Gerontologists will tell you that a 60-year-old who spends 14 nights in hospital will age 10 years,” Jackson says. Speeding up the time it takes to generate results such as ultrasounds will also reduce the time all patients have to spend in the hospital. [...] Despite the city’s fortunes improving in recent years, Liverpool is still one of the most deprived areas of the country [...] while the average household income is £22,787 – £14,000 lower than the national average (pdf) – and four in 10 children live in low income households – more than double the national average.

I had alcohol-related breast cancer. Here’s why I still drink | Joanna Moorhead | Opinion | The Guardian
The chief medical officer advises women to think about cancer when having a drink. But if I did that every time I had a glass of wine, I think I’d feel the cancer had won [...] I guess what it comes down to is quite simply the importance of enjoying life. When I had cancer, I discovered that I didn’t just want to survive; I wanted to have fun, to make the most of every single day, and to enjoy happy occasions and meals with my friends and family. [...] drinking wine, beer or tequila adds a dimension to social occasions that I rather enjoy. And somehow it feels to me that it wasn’t worth surviving cancer if I’m going to limit my life to thinking, every time someone offered me a glass of something, about my breast cancer and the likelihood of it returning. [...] Life is too short to cut out something you enjoy in moderation, [ picking up the words from the food lobby, heart disease and cancer in moderation. sprinkling in doubt. to continue that lifestyle. do you say asbestos in mod? ]

GPs battle fatalism in neighbourhood with Britain's worst life expectancy | Society | The Guardian
Doctors at new health centre in part of Glasgow known for the wrong reasons say ultimatums to give up smoking, drinking or fatty food just don’t work [...] And while they may live longer than before they do so in poor health, with complex, chronic illnesses. Clinicians call it premature multi-morbidity: patients who may be life-long smokers living with obesity, lung disease or ailing hearts. “Our patients have multiple chronic diseases about 15 to 20 years earlier than in affluent areas. They are living longer in poorer health,” Crawford says. [...] There is a strong sense that smoking is a rare pleasure in a difficult world; beating addiction is harder with great routine stress in daily life. [ self-medication and coping mechanisms ] [...] But they come to you because I don’t make judgments, and they don’t lie to me about how much they’re drinking,” [...] “I suppose you’re trying each time to enable them to finally make that change [...] [ keeping them alive ]

[...] Ungleichheit zwischen den sozialen Gruppen verstärkt.
