UK pay squeeze breaks all sorts of records for all the wrong reasons | Larry Elliott | Business | The Guardian
june 2017 by asterisk2a
As John Philpott, who runs the Jobs Economist consultancy, noted: “What’s remarkable is that pay growth, however measured, is so weak at a time when employment is at joint record rate of 74.8% and unemployment at a 42-year low of 4.6%, driven almost entirely in the latest quarter by relatively strong growth in full-time jobs for employees on permanent contracts. Hard times and near full employment make strange bedfellows, highlighting the extent to which a deregulated labour market with an abundance of workers available to fill low wage vacancies has altered the UK jobs landscape.”

Yes this really is the end of Tory austerity – because it was never about economics in the first place | The Independent
june 2017 by asterisk2a
[private sector will pick up the tap - the households did, but not corporations! bc long-term ROI growth in not attractive in the west w secular stagnation! see Richard Koo ] But it was a very long time coming. It became clear within a year of George Osborne’s 2010 “emergency budget”, which forced through huge cuts in capital budgets and an intense squeeze on Whitehall departments and welfare spending, that the austerity medicine was hurting, not helping.
The economy was flatlining, teetering on the verge of recession. Whether this was primarily due to the crisis in the neighbouring eurozone and a spike in global oil prices or because the negative knock-on impact of the government’s domestic spending cuts was bigger than initially thought is still debated by economists.

"Go Butler": So will das deutsche Start-up in den USA überleben - SPIEGEL ONLINE
january 2016 by asterisk2a
"Ich habe keine Ahnung, wie die je profitabel werden wollen" [...] Andere Concierge-Services haben sich vom Gute-Fee-Modell bereits verabschiedet: Der amerikanische Konkurrent Magic verlangt seit Kurzem die happige Gebühr von 100 Dollar für jede Stunde, die seine "Magicians" an der Wunscherfüllung arbeiten. Every Day I Want To Quit Social Media
october 2015 by asterisk2a
[ no more time to reflect and think for yourself ... we are all and feel Alon Together. ] I am drowning in a sea of anxiety created by Twitter and Facebook. [...] We all want to be recognized as clever or witty. [ your best side, public ] [...] I ended up on social media for a reason, and though the reason escapes me during moments of sheer panic and anxiety, I take part, no matter what — the pursuit of relevancy, or, in the strictest sense of the term, validation, is an imperative that exists as a key part of humankind’s quest for meaning. Self-definition has become intertwined with social media. We are all here for each other. I wake up staring at my phone. I fall asleep to the glow of the very same screen.

More patients in Scotland given antidepressants - BBC News
october 2015 by asterisk2a
814,181 patients in 2014/15. Since 2009/10, use of antidepressants has increased by 28.5%. Two-thirds of the patients given the drugs were women, with use peaking in the 50-54 age group. The figures indicated antidepressant use was associated with deprivation. They recorded 225,969 patients in the poorest parts of Scotland receiving the drugs, compared with 110,507 in the least deprived areas. The total cost of antidepressants to the NHS in Scotland was £40.8m. The use of lower-cost drugs means this figure has fallen by one-third over the past 10 years. [...] "We are now looking at the flabbergasting statistic of more than one in seven people in Scotland being prescribed antidepressants this year. The more you pursue happiness, the faster it runs from you | Zach Stafford | Comment is free | The Guardian
september 2015 by asterisk2a
Psychologist Iris Mauss at the University of California, Berkley found that the pursuit of happiness might just leave you worse off. “Wanting to be happy can make you less happy,” said Mauss in an interview with livescience.com. “If you explicitly and purposely focus on happiness, that appears to have a self-defeating quality.” [...] In her studies, participants who were not happy would begin blaming themselves for feeling sad. They thought it was an immediate flag for their failure, making these negative feelings even more counter-productive. The people who accepted these negative feelings as normal, however, were much happier in the long run. So, accepting your sadness could actually make you feel good. [...] For Darwin, emotions were very much tied to surviving, which requires more than just happiness. [...] Be open about how you’re feeling, don’t try to hide behind it or conceal it. // &! keeping a diary talking to and about yourself compassionately.

What I Learned This Week About Tim Cook’s Apple | Re/code
september 2015 by asterisk2a
[ always along the motto: extension of you, part of you. The new Apple under Jobs was NOT an overnight success! It build on its differentiation, strong base, a cult, a Tribe, 1000 True Fans, and build on it stride by stride. Most capitalistic company out of SV, no counter-culture out of largest corp on world. & can pull of iAd coup because it has monopsony! & Duopoly w Android. ] Many people love Apple, others despise it. But, even without Jobs, it cannot be ignored. There simply is no other company that combines such a high-quality hardware line with such well-regarded software platforms. A faltering Samsung has the former, but not the latter. A strong and admirable Google has the latter, but not the former. If you didn’t believe that before, this week’s event made it crystal clear, with once-bitter rivals like Microsoft and Adobe showing up onstage to boast about how well their products worked with new Apple hardware and software. One Map Shows Just How Expensive College Can Be for Students Making Minimum Wage
september 2015 by asterisk2a
[S]ubstantial evidence that lack of information plays a critical role in shaping the financial decisions people make. Consider how a vast majority of people who are currently defaulting on their student loans in the U.S. would be able to halt their financial suffering if they knew they could enroll in an income-based repayment plan that would shrink or eliminate their monthly payments. This map goes some way toward explaining why low-income students are less likely to enroll in college. If the idea that college is a risky investment is something thats gaining traction in well-to-do circles, then surely people who hail from less fortunate backgrounds are even more inclined to think the potential price is too high. // could be seen as balance sheet recession: rising cost of education - & on other side - unable 2 pay w job u can get (asset value). Alex Gibney’s New Documentary Paints An Ambivalent Portrait Of Steve Jobs | TechCrunch
september 2015 by asterisk2a
It opens with footage of the mass outpouring of grief after Jobs’ death in 2011, and the rest of the movie asks: Why did people feel so much attachment to the CEO of an enormous tech company? And is Jobs really worthy of such admiration? Gibney isn’t trying to convince people that they should stop buying Apple products — after all, he’s still got that iPhone. Instead the aim is to raise questions about Jobs’ values and the influence those values had on the rest of Silicon Valley (where Gibney often sees a similar “rough-and-tumble libertarian vibe”). [ ie lying to woz that he got paid only $700 ] &! theatln.tc/1EE17wR &! on.recode.net/1NdvHif - In his mind, his movie is a necessary counterbalance to overly positive portrayals of Apple’s iconic leader. [...] "I’m appalled, really, by his cruelty," [...] "This film really looks very carefully at his values." [...] "There’s a religion around Apple, and some won’t like it at all." [ Religion, duh. the personal assistant is the new smartphone! can't live without it once you (technology; augmented intelligence and artificial intelligence) mastered it. // GoButtler in Germany. And Operator in SV - http://techcrunch.com/2015/04/22/the-request-network/ - << both take a cut/commission fee. Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Facebook could have it as features. Just as Facebook can have Meerkat as feature, for the celebrities. And the personal assistant - will be JUST A FEATURE - on your phone. iOS, Android ... & Facebook's 'empire' Platform to keep you inside Facebook continuing scrolling that god damn newsfeed. // // noise is lower on FB newsfeed (learning algorithm - your personal filter bubble) vs Twitter and vs RSS. ... «Die Chinesen haben einen Plan – und das ist ein gewaltiger Vorteil» - watson
september 2015 by asterisk2a
[ focus on productive investment in the future - is hard to get going, internal economic re-tooling - social safety net, pension, health care - so people have higher propensity to spend/consume. ] Das Seidenstrasse-Projekt [massive integration of Asia/Africa into its own future, non-dependent on western world!!!] ist – obwohl die Chinesen diesen Vergleich hassen – eine Art Marshallplan. [ 21st century economy, STEM, research, added value, productive investment, high end manufacturing type of the future ie bio, gene stuff, 3D printing, knowledge economy, added value services by educated & skilled workforce, social mobility, sense of agency ]

Facebook Built a ‘Personal Assistant’ Inside Messenger | Re/code
august 2015 by asterisk2a
Facebook has a new, A.I.-powered Siri-like assistant tool in Messenger. It's called "M," and it's the company's latest effort in a battle with Google, Uber and others to be the artificial intelligence leader in Silicon Valley. // FB got AI lab in France, got money to invest, to diversify from other Messaging platforms - tcrn.ch/1N1rTSF &! tcrn.ch/1JCfs8Q --- can productise it! your personal assistant, for shopping - convenience - no clicking, not tapping, - M takes care of buying that item you saw in your stream. --- also keeps people inside Facebook! instead of leading them out to the shopping site/product site/... --- also expanding the category/vertical of the messenger you use. --- // // &! http://www.theverge.com/2015/5/28/8677147/google-now-on-tap-announced // &! tcrn.ch/1idSz5R

Staff Exodus, Pressure From Microsoft, Apple Hit Google Now | Re/code
august 2015 by asterisk2a
According to multiple sources, their initial vision of Now — as a mobile assistant tailored to particular users — works best living on the mobile operating system, not within search. Also, Google is a political place and search is Congress. Big, necessary, stodgy. [...] “‘Look, I’ve got a lot on my plate. Chrome and Android are my top priorities. Google Now is not on that. I can’t fight that battle for you.’” [...] Apple, for its part, looks prepared to launch a competitor to Now on Tap. With its proactive assistant and spotlight search, the Apple entry could elbow Google out. // // Amazon released a (SW/HW)PA for the living room, Apple got Siri & just recently launched its own integrated search engine called "Spotlight" & Google released Google Now (voice activated search in response to Siri) and at last Google I/O, Now on Tap [ Now on Tap will solve app developers’ nagging issue with discovery. ] And FB just came out w an assistant product for Messenger. // &! bit.ly/1JYeNCT

Amazon's Culture: Toxic or Just Tough? by The Jay & Farhad Show
august 2015 by asterisk2a
Hello! This week, Farhad Manjoo (New York Times) and Jay Yarow (Business Insider) are joined by special guest Jodi Kantor (New York Times) to discuss her polarizing article about Amazon's culture. // // how technology functions in the workplace - efficiency, quantified self << the feedback tool you can always use, what ever your state of emotion, gripe, stick, bias, prejudice, ... feudal Darwinism creeps into knowledge worker, white-collar and blue-collar workers, MBA's and PhD's. [...] contributes to gender inequality (women with the back on their wall, leave or get started and forget about family & kids, life.) [...] brutal years are NOT Tour of Duty - Reid Hoffman The Alliance. // PS: Reed Hastings (Netflix) Culture document transpires that it is expected to contribute, even if it doesn't spell it out. Netflix also had to fight and overcome as much as Amazon! Proves again that internal & external environment a company finds itself affects its values & culture inevitable [Thesis].

Michelle Mone: tsar quality? - BBC News
august 2015 by asterisk2a
[ gov role for No Campaign support, and possible Lord's appointment ] It's a message that speaks of defiance and determination, but also perhaps a thin skin and insecurity. So what is it that drives Michelle Mone? One guide is to follow her on Twitter. [...] What I've learned is not about business, but about image. [...] The image she projects is of someone constantly on the go from top hotel to yacht, to a glamorous photo shoot, to her evening gown laid out on her hotel bed, to a peek inside her wardrobe at the choices she's got that morning. There are pre-speech nerves when facing a glitzy, powerful audience, a menu from a swish restaurant, stroking some very expensive cars, and short messages of encouragement to her admirers. This is Michelle Mone: the brand. [...] [ it's sponsored by the DWP, aiming at those on benefits ] &! bbc.in/1JiCR3p &! bbc.in/1KvZPRf off Ultimo board. &! bit.ly/1Jr4rxi

Celebrity lifestyles for sale | Life and style | The Guardian
august 2015 by asterisk2a
It started with Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop – now everyone from Zooey Deschanel and Reese Witherspoon to Lena Dunham is selling you their way of life [...] Did this have a bearing on how they then responded to the way the story unfolded across the media? This is the less quantifiable benefit of the celebrity lifestyle brand: the emotional yank of feeling as if you’re part of a community, albeit one trying hard to sell you sunglasses. To be a fan today is to constantly be sold to, but also to constantly be questioning and scrutinising the celebrity’s choices. Fans are “polytheistic”, says Auerbach. “They have more choice and want to ‘follow’ a range of celebs who appeal to different parts of their personalities.” The aspirational foodie on Instagram, the interiors on Pinterest, the “sassy” motherhood blogger, the feminist tweeter. “It’s less about individual stars,” Auerbach adds, “and more about constellations.”

Robert J. Shiller: "Are We Headed for Another Financial Crisis?" (final edition, as of MAR 8) - YouTube
july 2015 by asterisk2a
3rd ed adds bond market. where richard koo explains bond prices are a symptom of the balance sheet recession as is "deflationary." // liquidity trap // predicting turning points is bad business - highlighting fundy skew is easy. // equity bubble BURST? no. bond bubble BURST? no. how abt unreasonable higher interest rates for businesses bc of Taper from Fed long dated bonds into illiquid market. like Koo argues as possibility, which would depress gdp growth further bc of higher capital cost than the economy fundy actually would demand. contributing 2 the secular stagnation. // Other case: Crash of China (too much of a good thing, irrational exuberance) & Western Central Banks have no means 2 ease further & Career Politicians have no guts 2 actually pull out the guns for once 4 intelligent fiscal stimulus w a long-term view (no white elephants & bridges 2 nowhere). // 19:30 status anxiety, Sozialer Abstieg, everyone for himself, austerity, inequality, Software, etc = secular stagnation

The escape from the balance sheet recession and the QE trap: An interview with Richard Koo - YouTube
july 2015 by asterisk2a
"deflationary" is a symptom of balance sheet recession, deleveraging, debtoverhang ... of the private sector, corporate sector (& public gov sector) (to repair balance sheet). inflation of price of goods 2 live is still existent. you cant eat laptops. inflation is still present. actions of private sector, corporate sector to repair balance sheet (and even public sector, all three together) is deflationary. // UK! interesting is that consumer still borrows ie via credit card and mortgages. // question is how long UK can run such a big current account deficit. somebody has to pay for it, if not the gov with debt, then it has to be the private sector. as long as it can serve debt payments, as long as it has wage growth (increase of productivity, closing of output gap). But job creation during recovery was mostly Service Sector Jobs & self-employment. Not added value STEM. // corporate sector will not, in the long-run, pay for current account deficit w debt. &! youtu.be/EhYvaMc3f44

Guess Who Doesn’t Fit In at Work - NYTimes.com
may 2015 by asterisk2a
[ rejecting an applicant because you don't see a fit is your fault by you limited point of view and field, at the end its about the work not necessarily to bond over drinks, sport, parties, ping pong, strip clubs and rating of porn stars and female co-workers ] Discovering shared experiences was one of the most powerful sources of chemistry, but interviewers were primarily interested in new hires whose hobbies, hometowns and biographies matched their own. Bonding over rowing college crew, getting certified in scuba, sipping single-malt Scotches in the Highlands or dining at Michelin-starred restaurants was evidence of fit; sharing a love of teamwork or a passion for pleasing clients was not. Some (former) athletes fit exclusively with other athletes; others fit only with those who played the same sport. At one hiring committee meeting I attended, I watched a partner who was an avid Red Sox fan argue for rejecting a Yankees supporter on the grounds of misfit. &! tcrn.ch/1FPTK2z values!

Monica Lewinsky: The price of shame - YouTube
may 2015 by asterisk2a
In 1998, says Monica Lewinsky, “I was Patient Zero of losing a personal reputation on a global scale almost instantaneously.” Today, the kind of online public shaming she went through has become a constant. In a brave talk, she takes a look at our “culture of humiliation,” in which online shame equals dollar signs — and demands a different way.

Staying Relevant In A Rapid Innovation Era | TechCrunch
february 2015 by asterisk2a
At the same time, development has never played a more critical role in driving an organization’s progress. Success requires developers and their teams to adapt fast. Below are strategies for navigating this complicated, sink-or-swim world of development [...] Invest in Retraining Yourself [...] Lynda.com, Function Space, Udemy, Codeacademy, Code School are all good options. A little bit of training and practice a few times a week will go a long way. [...] Keep Notes [ Documentation ] [...] Read StackOverflow. StackOverflow is the only game in town for asking development-related questions, and it contains a gold mine of information for developers. [...] Put Your Hobby Code on GitHub

With bullying app Secret on life support, investors learn the risk of investing in assholes | PandoDaily
december 2014 by asterisk2a
Oh, and there’s one more lesson for investors about investing in assholes: If they seem to be heading for the door after a just a few months, you probably should do the same. At the same time as Secret asked investors to pony up $25m to fund the company’s “growth”, Byttow and his co-founder Chrys Bader-Wechseler personally cashed out $6m. That big payday came just six months after Secret launched, and less than a month before Byttow told the world he didn’t care about the victims of bullying.

The Most Valuable Skill Every Recruiter Overlooks — The Entrepreneur’s Journey — Medium
december 2014 by asterisk2a
[ LISTENING SKILLS ] [...] >> Empathy. To be a great leader is to be a great listener instead of a talker. Think about it. When a project isn’t getting done, or somebody is unhappy, how do you move forward? Do you go into the solution right away? Absolutely not. Before you fix the problem, you need to figure out what the problem actually is. And you’re not going to figure that out by walking into a room and taking charge immediately. Why are we 2 weeks behind? Why is something at a standstill? The way you win is by listening to the reasons WHY things aren’t going well. Once you have assessed those, you can jump into problem solving mode.

The World’s Biggest Popstars are Walking Contradictions | NOISEY
december 2014 by asterisk2a
bit.ly/1HXHZIy &! "However, what's most telling, is that Lorde has become a bit of an icon for the materialists that she set out to criticise. Kanye loves her; "Royals" soundtracked an advert for a $700 Samsung phone; she's collaborated with MAC cosmetics. It's this exact contradiction - I'm this and I'm also this - which is part of a wider social trend that's fucking around with the definition of authenticity and counter-culture. This stems from what, if you want to get academic about it, is called hyperreality - a phenomenon first observed in the eighties by French sociologist Jean Baudrillard. Shows like The Only Way is Essex are the pinnacle of hyperreality, where even though it clearly states that it's been scripted for your pleasure, the programme relies on the viewer buying into the idea of the characters being completely genuine. [...] we don't want to reject consumer culture at all. We want to buy into the idea of rejecting it. [...] We suck it up and go along with it.

NASA: We're sending humans to Mars | Hacker News
december 2014 by asterisk2a
It's not a matter of public/private indeed, it's a matter of size. The bigger an organization, the more dis-aligned individual and collective incentives become. In a start-up you can't afford to harm the enterprise in order to further your own interest: if you act parasitically you'll kill your host almost immediately. In a big company, you won't make a meaningful difference, neither positively nor negatively, so you may as well serve your own interests, irrespective of their effect on the whole company. Corollary: people who want to play corporate politics concentrate in big companies, because that's where you can do it with relative impunity. Big private companies offset this competitive disadvantage through economy of scales and/or lobbying; public services do it through taxes and monopolies. NASA isn't inefficient because it's public, but because it's huge. // &! on a different note. improving NHS by managed market approach!? offering choice = competition, w care&quality standards.

The Responsive Enterprise: Embracing the Hacker Way - ACM Queue
december 2014 by asterisk2a
The "Seven Aspects of our Culture," as described in a Netflix slide presentation (Values are what we Value; High Performance; Freedom and Responsibility; Context, not Control; Highly Aligned, Loosely Coupled; Pay Top of Market; and Promotions and Development) provides a crisp formulation of people-management values for a software-centric enterprise.4 Here is our take on four of Netflix's seven core values: [...] No company embodies the hacker culture better than Facebook, and CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg explained the idea eloquently in his letter to investors when Facebook filed for its IPO: "Hacker culture is also extremely open and meritocratic. Hackers believe that the best idea and implementation should always win—not the person who is best at lobbying for an idea or the person who manages the most people."10

Unrest at Nest Labs
november 2014 by asterisk2a
Coming from Dropcam, which boasted a much more egalitarian culture, a clash seems all but inevitable. Yet these employees also suggest that the differences between Dropcam and Nest are not just stylistic. One Nest employee says that Nest, which employs between 700 and 800 people, will see roughly double the revenue of Dropcam this year but that Dropcam, which employs 100 people, is growing its revenue eight times as fast, thanks largely to its subscription business. Many employees were reportedly disappointed to sell to Google because “we were firing on all cylinders, with a sensor product about to be released and an outdoor camera about to come out in 2015 and great sales. It just felt like we’d been chopped off at the knees.”

Middelhoff-Prozess: Das Urteil geht uns alle an - SPIEGEL ONLINE
november 2014 by asterisk2a
[ Power Corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

october 2014 by asterisk2a
[Muendige Buerger? Ne ...]

According to the book "The Everything Store", Amazon employees pay for the parking ($20-30 per day). Coffee machines are ancient varieties but it's better than past when employees also had to pay for coffee. You get the desk that is downright cheapest possible thing you can get. And so on... If you are wondering how Amazon can attract any talent at all, the answer is that 70% staff is college hires that were promised significant stock. The caveat is that it doesn't even start getting vested until after 3rd year. Most of the hires leaves in about 2 year (attrition rate is being rumored as much as 70%). So their secret is feeding the growth engine on huge swaths of college hires that can be lured for stock options in distant futures with expectation that they will just leave before vesting starts. [...] Amazon seems to really lack a unified culture, [ ... explains those who actually stay, get promoted ... see http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-29617115 ]

BBC News - Why firms don't want you to be brilliant at your job
october 2014 by asterisk2a
The last reason is the one that troubles me most. It may not be true that the partners are miles dimmer than the graduates. It is just that the two can't talk to each other, and so are blind to each other's strengths. It was always the case that the old and the young sometimes struggled to understand each other at work, but now it is more true than ever. [...] The graduate trainees joining this year will be among the first to have grown up on the internet, which means they communicate differently, think differently, acquire knowledge differently and do different things with it. They look at the partners and see slowness - the partners look at them and feel sad about their limited vocabulary, and wonder if they have ever read a book.

Revealed: how Whisper app tracks ‘anonymous’ users | Technology | The Guardian
october 2014 by asterisk2a
[ NSA & Co. served them with an order to comply, in order to watch over employees. Spotting potential Whistleblowers and leaks. Period. ] The technology, for example, enables the company to monitor all the geolocated messages sent from the Pentagon and National Security Agency. It also allows Whisper to track an individual user’s movements over time. When users have turned off their geolocation services, the company also, on a targeted, case-by-case basis, extracts their rough location from IP data emitted by their smartphone. & http://techcrunch.com/2014/10/16/whisper-suspected-of-tracking-user-info-and-sharing-it-with-the-u-s-government/ & http://pando.com/2014/10/08/twitter-sues-the-justice-department-for-the-right-to-be-honest-with-consumers/ & http://www.theguardian.com/media/2014/oct/17/-sp-whisper-tracking-location-users-facts-response

Jaron Lanier mit Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels ausgezeichnet - SPIEGEL ONLINE
october 2014 by asterisk2a

Marissa Mayer's Secret Plan For Tumblr - Business Insider
october 2014 by asterisk2a
[hip tumblr] [as YTers are dismayed over income outlook on YT alone ... others look into options to sway them away from YT and their million-click-content ... this include companies like; FB, Twitter & Y!] According to several sources, Yahoo executives believe Tumblr should become the company's answer to YouTube. In this vision, Tumblr would become the exclusive distributor of videos from YouTube stars. [<< locked in to Platform] [...] + bit.ly/1oVWvFa /+/ business model & plan has to be Multimedia slash HQ destination site* for content creators more important. in order to keep them on their site, their brand, and not hop every 3-4 years onto the next Platform. *With newsletter, with blog, categories like RAW/BTS - unedited, improve style, with feed, merch (limited editions, new items every quarter, up-sell with signed t-shirts and autograph), A/B testing etc. with/as own independent income source.
