Oscars head acts over lack of nominees' diversity - BBC News
Oscars head [...] taking action to "alter the make-up" of their membership, after Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith's refusal to attend because of the mostly white nominees. Boone Isaacs praised the "wonderful work" of the nominees but said she was "heartbroken" at the lack of diversity. Lee said on Instagram he "cannot support" the "lily white" awards show. [...] Lee was appalled at "forty white actors in two years"being nominated [...] Jada Pinkett Smith: "Begging for acknowledgement... diminishes dignity and power" [...] Last year, there were similar calls to boycott the ceremony but Lee and Pinkett Smith are the first high-profile figures to carry out the threat. Neil Patrick Harris presented the show and the audience figures were down 16% to a six-year low. The hashtag "OscarsSoWhite" was heavily used after Thursday's announcement. I honestly can’t decide if this is progress or the opposite | PandoDaily
But we still — unfortunately– live in a world where aggressive women are called “bitches.” Opinionated women are called “harpies.” And female founder who may scream at a team who misses a deadline isn’t considered “passionate” or “intense,” she’s considered “hysterical” or worse– on her period. [...] But until the rest of tech comes to respect the complexity and strength of women leaders, let’s not just hand people the cliches, OK? A nice wine and cheese is always an option.

‘I can’t think of a time when it was worse’: US abortion doctors speak out | World news | The Guardian
It is a time of heightened tension in Texas, following the passing of one of the most restrictive anti-abortion bills in the nation, made famous by Democrat Wendy Davis’s 11-hour filibuster against it in 2013. The Boyds have been warned by the FBI not to give media interviews because of fears for their safety. Over the years, they have had two arson attacks at their clinics, one in the 1980s and one in 2007, as well as countless death threats. But they have chosen to ignore the agency’s instructions, to highlight what they say is a roll back of women’s hard-won reproductive rights.

BBC News - Millennials, not Mumsnet: Younger women and the 2015 election
Radio One DJ Gemma Cairney, 29, said that for many of her generation, politics was a "complete other world", which many could not even get up the energy to feel let down by. Many were in debt - which created a whole new reason not to register to vote. "They are afraid to register because that means the bailiffs know where they live," she said. But what can politicians do to appeal to "millennial" voters? [...] Sexism in the male-dominated corridors of power was highlighted by columnist Ms Gordon. She said she had once been called a "slut" to her face by an MP who went on to become a minister. "You have to sweep that culture out," she said - and using quotas to get more women into Parliament was one way to do it. [...] About 22% of MPs are women - "20% of us is not enough", she said. "I think it's quite damaging for democracy."

Women In Tech: It’s Not Just A Pipeline Problem | TechCrunch
Between ages 25 and 30, 41% of the young talent with credentials in those subject matters are female … [but] 52% of this talent drops out … The most important antigen is the machismo that continues to permeate these work environments … 63% of women in science, engineering and technology have experienced sexual harassment. [...] If you create an environment wherein a whole class of entrepreneurs and employees goes unnoticed by deeply flawed industry-wide “pattern recognition” heuristics, and/or one where they have to be perpetually on their guard, and must pretend not to notice all the myriad microaggressions that make them feel vulnerable and uncomfortable and out-of-place then many of those entrepreneurs and employees will decide, rightly, that the tech industry is not worth the hassle and grief. + http://craigconnects.org/2014/08/why-men-must-lean-in-to-support-womens-leadership-2.html

European Investor Admits He Pestered Female Entrepreneur For Sex In “Deal” Email | TechCrunch
But the way tech investing works is that people tend to invest in people like themselves. The horrible laws of homophily, the tendency of individuals to associate and bond with similar others, mean that they inevitably prefer to invest in people like them, and the cycle continues. Men tend to invest in men. Yet tech is forming the world as we know it today. It pervades every part of our world and will do for rest of human history. And this is a world that women occupy. Women who have their own capacities and ambitions to succeed and to make their impact in their own way. [...] We have to work out what it means for men and women to work equally in this industry — since we have so few examples of women rising to the top. || 2nd girl @luciemontel / @geschehaas facebook.com/geschehaas linkedin.com/pub/gesche-haas/4/773/b59 || http://bit.ly/VHbD0c http://bit.ly/1tnKPPf http://bit.ly/1obLldz http://tnw.co/1AxSAW1 http://dailym.ai/1qqqmFj http://bit.ly/1tjEy80 +YC http://on.recode.net/YFCETT
