What has the Women’s March accomplished, beyond mere visibility? | Jessa Crispin | Opinion | The Guardian
Women’s March // Advertisement

Since its inception, Women’s March has faced criticism by many within the feminist community. The March and its participants, we heard from many critics, marginalized Native women, disabled women, women of color, trans women and Jewish women to present a very safe, white, middle of the road protest. [...] Others called the organization out for not having any real agenda, and for focusing solely on what it was against – the Trump administration and Republican control of Congress – and not what it was for. This is a common problem for organizations that begin as protest movements.

Home Office volunteers no data on EU migrants in work | UK news | The Guardian
UK was lax on applying EU rules. James O'Brien hypothesis is, that it would cost more than it would help (under Labour). When immigration was a non-issue publicly. But Cameron and Co had no balls, made risk analysis, thought risk of Brexit is low low low, thus not bring it up in times of Austerity to spend money on enforcig those rules (eg keeping count and enforcing controls and deportation, and seeking out EU rough sleepers working black market for constucting and stuff).

PM suggests free movement extension - BBC News
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/apr/04/free-movement-will-go-on-in-transition-after-brexit-theresa-may - EU free movement into the UK could be extended after Brexit, Theresa May has suggested.
The prime minister said there would be an "implementation" phase once an exit deal had been struck, with business and governments needing a "period of time" to adjust to the new rules.
The government insists Brexit will allow the UK to control its borders.
Mrs May was pressed on what would happen if there was a transitional phase after a deal is reached.
BBC deputy political editor John Pienaar says the comments "clearly left open the possibility of free movement continuing, at least temporarily".

Record number of EU citizens quit working in NHS last year | Politics | The Guardian
[ on paper, 2nd class citizen ] The figures, compiled by NHS Digital, prompted medical leaders to call for more reassurances to European workers about their future in the UK. A total of 17,197 EU staff, including nurses and doctors, left their posts in 2016, compared with 13,321 in 2015 and 11,222 for 11 months in 2014.

Even though EU staff numbers rose across the period analysed, experts fear the number of people leaving is the more significant trend.

Ukip: Britain should be able to send back 'beggars or criminals' from EU | Politics | The Guardian
The UK should have the right not to let EU citizens stay if they “do not work, never pay taxes or are beggars or criminals”, a senior Ukip spokesman has said.

Gerard Batten, an MEP with responsibility for Ukip’s Brexit policy, suggested on Monday that the UK should have the discretion to refuse some EU citizens the right to stay and backed Theresa May’s decision not to give any guarantees without reciprocal deals from other EU countries. [...] Pressed about EU citizens, Batten suggested the UK should have the right to decline to keep some people.

Meet the conservationists who believe that burning is good for wildlife | George Monbiot | Environment | The Guardian
Why is it that practices we recognise as destructive when we see them elsewhere in the world are judged “environmentally friendly” here? When we see land being burnt in Indonesia or Brazil, do we call it conservation, or do we call it destruction? Because it damages soil and hydrology, incinerates wildlife and simplifies ecosystems, destruction is the correct term. Burning on Dartmoor has the same impacts. It’s about as environmentally friendly as tipping bleach into a river. [...] I happen to believe that too much weight is given to sheep farming, and too little to wildlife. But where there are no tenants and no grazing, instead of using this as an opportunity for ecological restoration, the Exmoor authority is bringing in its own sheep to ensure that seedlings can’t grow and wildlife can’t recover. It’s utter madness.

Scotland's environment in 'serious trouble' - BBC News
The report is a follow up to the 2013 State Of Nature UK-wide report, which warned that 60% of 3,148 species studied had declined in past 50 years, and 31% had declined strongly. More than one in 10 of all species assessed were under threat of disappearing from the UK's shores altogether. [...] "As NGOs, we naturally asked ourselves 'What should be done about that?' "This report seeks to answer that question, and is based on a year's interactive research with a wide range of experts - both in wildlife ecology and in policy development and delivery. Snapchat and Spiegel’s Interesting Call on the Hong Kong Demonstrations | TechCrunch
@EvanSpiegel on why @Snapchat chose not to make an 'Our Story' for the Hong Kong protests: 'One of my pet peeves over time is how the technology industry has tried to sell counterculture. It’s tried to sell the revolution. We’ve been really resistant to doing this' || WRONG. Hypocrisy. Selling a pro-democracy movement as counterculture is wrong. it's deceitful. Snapchat and it's investors only hold open the door for China. As long as they don't upset the Chinese regime, they can operate in the future in China. Apps that went "against the China's regiem politics" were shut out of this country, +1bn potential users. Occupy Central’s polite protesters: The Hong Kong demonstrators are disciplined, organized, and prepared.
The Occupy Central demonstrators are courteous. That’s actually what makes them so dangerous. [...] These aren’t just idealists; these are savvy political operators who understand successful nonviolent resistance. [...] The answers to these questions can be found in the appropriately titled “Manual of Disobedience.” Published online several days before the Occupy Central campaign was set to begin, the document (written in Chinese and English) is part how-to guide and part philosophical mission statement. It details the movement’s tactics, the rules for nonviolent protest, the legal codes that may be violated, and the exact procedure to follow should someone be arrested. It also implores protesters to “avoid physical confrontation, but also to avoid developing hatred in [their] heart,” and explains that the protests must be a model of the values that they are striving to see in their society, namely “equality, tolerance, love, and care.” [...] Book - Blueprint for Revolution.

BBC News - Hong Kong: Protesters defiant amid stand-off
Thousands of protesters have taken over central areas of Hong Kong and are camped outside government offices - many schools and banks are closed. Protesters are angry at changes to Hong Kong's political system which will allow direct elections but only from a pool of candidates approved by Beijing. A student-led protest movement has joined forces with the larger Occupy Central after a week of demonstrations and class boycotts. On Sunday night police used tear gas and pepper spray on the crowds. The government says riot police have now withdrawn, and has ordered protesters to disperse peacefully as soon as possible. + http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2014/09/29/352467064/whats-at-stake-for-hong-kong + http://www.spiegel.de/politik/ausland/hongkong-die-regenschirm-revolution-a-994453.html + http://www.spiegel.de/politik/ausland/hongkong-china-fuerchtet-den-grossen-aufstand-a-994365.html + youtu.be/MJmWd5alvnE + youtu.be/D3f3IsWPKH8 + bbc.in/ZnaHB0 + ! youtu.be/2D3LltOxVlA

German Chemist Pushes for Smarter Use of Materials through C2C - SPIEGEL ONLINE
Austerity and sacrifice, the favorite disciplines of many environmentalists, are anathema to him. The German environmental movement? "A club of guilt managers deprived of enjoyment." The proponents of sustainability? "They're optimizing the wrong thing." To turn his theory into practice, Braungart has established a company, EPEA. His German clients include personal care products giant Beiersdorf and lingerie maker Triumph, mail order company Otto and cosmetics maker Aveda. Braungart advises Volkswagen, Unilever and BMW. With his help, HeidelbergCement developed a special cement that purifies the air once its been processed into concrete. And, in 2013, Puma introduced the first fully recyclable athletic clothing collection, which includes compostable shoes. [...] "There is enormous political and especially economic resistance, because an economy based on wastefulness is very profitable," says Müller. "It isn't as though we lack technological solutions. ...."

The Civil Rights Movement Is Going in Reverse in Alabama | New Republic
But in other, less obvious ways, black people in Alabama and across the South are as politically vulnerable as they’ve been since the emergence of the civil rights movement. “It’s a total disempowering of African Americans,” Sanders said. “We are going back to the past very fast.” [...] From that perch, he struck a deal in 2006 with Republican Governor Bob Riley that raised the threshold at which an Alabama family of four starts paying state income tax, from $4,600 annually to $12,500. Knight would have preferred to raise the threshold to the poverty line, but he felt that he had to focus on what was politically feasible. It was an approach indicative of Knight’s overall legislative philosophy. “ [...] Sanders and Knight were criticized by some black politicians, as well as by liberal white ones, for being too timid, too incremental. But the two argued that they were playing a long game and that, eventually, they’d achieve their larger goals.

Generation LGBTQIA - NYTimes.com
Rise of post gay-rights movement because of the lack of T&Q and other in real-world LGBT environement. Because gender-nonconforming (Non-Cis) people feel lost in a publicly L&G-only accepting world. YOU DON'T NEED TO UNDERSTAND to ACCEPT, as long as we do not hurt you. Welcome to LGBTQ+ ... !

If the gay-rights movement today seems to revolve around same-sex marriage, this generation is seeking something more radical: an upending of gender roles beyond the binary of male/female. The core question isn’t whom they love, but who they are — that is, identity as distinct from sexual orientation.

But what to call this movement? Whereas “gay and lesbian” was once used to lump together various sexual minorities — and more recently “L.G.B.T.” to include bisexual and transgender — the new vanguard wants a broader, more inclusive abbreviation. “Youth today do not define themselves on the spectrum of L.G.B.T.,”
