Mental health equality call gets high profile backing - BBC News
The government increased overall mental health funding to £11.7bn in 2014/15. But Mr Lamb said people with mental ill health "don't get the same right to access treatment on a timely basis that everyone else gets". He called it a "historic injustice." His son was diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder at the age of 15 and Mr Campbell has spoken about his battle with depression. Inequality in care The NHS became officially responsible for ensuring the standard of care for the mentally ill was equal to that of physically ill people in 2012. In the spring, the government pledged an extra £1.25bn largely for children's mental health over the next five years. [...] It also introduced the first waiting time targets in mental health, guaranteeing treatment within 18 weeks. But the campaign says not enough has been done to address a continuing inequality in care standards and funding. [...] The life expectancy for people with mental health problems remains 20 years lower ...

Farming News - Pesticides have bigger impact on invertebrates than climate change new study reports
This is one of the first studies to investigate the impact such factors have on farmland invertebrates in the UK and it is hoped that the findings will encourage the creation of new measures to mitigate the loss of these organisms. Results suggest that increasing pesticide use has had more of a direct effect on abundance of some invertebrates than temperature change, with the main driver of change in an agricultural environment being human behaviour. Climate change will, in the long term, cause changes in certain groups of organisms, some of which are cereal pests whose abundance may increase. Any subsequent increase in the use of insecticides will negatively affect the abundance of all invertebrate groups, many of which are beneficial.

Old-age benefits can’t be sacrosanct for ever | David Brindle | Society | The Guardian
Older people’s charity Independent Age is doing just that. In a bold move, it has broken ranks with the wider pensioner lobby, sticking its head above the parapet to call for a debate on the continuation of universal age-related benefits. There is, it says, “a case to be made for using the tax system to remove benefits such as winter fuel payment from the wealthiest pensioners who pay the higher rate of income tax”. The idea itself is hardly novel: the Barker commission set up by the King’s Fund thinktank said last year that it should be considered in a rethink of health and social care funding[.] //&! bit.ly/1QR2BFj - Scrap triple lock that protects state pensions, says thinktank chief. NHS starts 'stem cell factory' for diabetes - BBC News
NHS Blood and Transplant wants to make and give the experimental therapy to patients at high risk of developing diabetes-related kidney problems. It is hoped the injections will slow down or stop tissue damage, removing the need for dialysis or transplants. Diabetes is the most common cause of end stage kidney disease, which kills around 40,000 people a year in the UK. The 48 patients taking part in the study will be treated at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and Belfast Health and Social Care Trust or at another trial site in Italy. The injection of cells they will receive are called stromal cells and they are grown from donated human bone marrow. These immature cells can grow and change into a variety of tissue - bone, cartilage and fat. But it is their ability to release proteins that reduce inflammation in the kidney which interests the researchers. In animal studies [shown] measurable improvements in kidney function[.] [NO CURE! Part II: Is the Government fulfilling its role in the fight against cancer?
The scale of the challenge is apparent. I think we should be as bold and ambitious as possible: scientists, clinicians, patients, the general public and politicians all working together for a single goal: to eliminate cancer within a generation, and Britain at the forefront of this. [...] Patient experience has to be prioritised and this is difficult when NHS cancer services are under unprecedented pressure and the Government far too often provides contradictory messages. The Department of Health must provide the NHS with the resources and the long-term, holistic stability to allow Trusts to invest in state-of-the-art equipment. The NHS needs to emphasise prevention and early detection too, but the risk is that under greater financial and workforce pressure, cancer services will be forced to firefight.

Rezension ǀ Was wäre ein selbstbestimmtes Leben?
Europe is becoming an undemocratic continent where force matters more than law | Comment is free | The Guardian
Only banks, global corporations and the superrich have any power against this faceless semi-superstate [...] In the past year, on two occasions when tested, European solidarity fell apart. [...] The real power, meanwhile, sits with large corporations, banks and elites. And here’s the strangest thing: for all the power concentrated at the top, the EU lacks the will to operate purposefully in the multipolar global power system. We know, roughly, what the US wants. Ditto for China and Russia. Ask what Europe wants – in Ukraine, Syria or the Arctic circle – and you’ll draw a blank. In a multipolar world, whose chaos zones are expanding, effective states with clear diplomatic aims and red lines matter.

The Guardian view on the criminal courts charge: unjust, ineffective and mean-spirited | Editorial | Comment is free | The Guardian
The consequences have been entirely predictable – and quite possibly intentional. Breadline defendants are choosing to plead guilty and pay the £150 rather than run the risk of an even higher charge by pleading not guilty. Not surprisingly, and rightly, lawyers and reformers are incensed. The Law Society and the Bar Council, plus lobby groups like the Howard League for Penal Reform, say that defendants are pleading guilty even when they are innocent. Dozens of magistrates across England have resigned rather than participate in the system, including one who was initially suspended for offering to pay a destitute defendant’s charge himself. Last month in New Zealand, the current lord chief justice, Lord Thomas, said that the new charges were “imperilling” Magna Carta rights of access to justice.

The blame for distorting our view of women doesn’t lie just with advertisers | Lucy Mangan | Comment is free | The Guardian
If we objected strongly enough to warped views of female bodies, women would take our custom elsewhere. But we keep buying the brands that offend us [...] But the lack of change in this area suggests consumers are not changing their spending habits. And as most of the consumers of the brands and products these advertisers are selling to are women purporting to hate this kind of thing, we have a conundrum: why are we still doing this? Why aren’t we putting our money where our mouths are? And then, obviously, in further solidarity taking our mouths off for a pizza somewhere? [...] Asking, or compelling by legislation, advertisers to do this runs counter to almost every prevailing ideology and trend. It asks that moneymaking ventures act for the greater good instead of the bottom line. It asks government to chip away at a cornerstone of the free market. It conceptualises women as hapless victims of intangible forces.

Criminal court charge punishes poorest the most, says magistrate who quit in protest | Law | The Guardian
“The criminal courts charge disproportionately punishes the poorest in our community,” she said. “Those who cannot pay for a TV licence, a train ticket, or previous fines. Simultaneously, the job centres are sanctioning people’s benefits lasting for anything up to three years without a fair trial. “These charges undermine the right to a fair trial, putting pressure on people to plead guilty for fear of the costs. They limit our ability to impose fines, prosecution costs and rightful compensation. They have reduced the discretion magistrates should possess to sentence based on individual circumstances and, finally, I believe they are unworkable and will cost more to recover [and remit] than they are worth.”

Iain Duncan Smith calls people without a disability "normal"
The art of cruelty: why the Conservative attack on disabled people harms us all. No sick person responds to their diagnosis by thinking, “I can scam taxpayers for £73 a week!” [...] Not only is in-work poverty a larger drain on the benefits system than the unemployed, but most of the things that help disabled people get back to work have been cut. [...] They got away with this by launching an all-out propaganda assault that portrays disabled and workless people as “scroungers”, “sponging” off the state, when presumably they should be grateful not to be left on a hillside to die as would have been done in the good old days. [...] This is Tory Britain. [...] The welfare state is being dismantled and rebuilt as a machine to manage and discipline the workforce into accepting precarious labour, low pay and no social safety net. [...] this way the Tories can persuade the most vulnerable in society to accept their fate and the rest of us to believe that they deserve it. [...] moral hazard

Antarctic ice sheets face catastrophic collapse without deep emissions cuts | Environment | The Guardian
[ emotionally, people are not there to change ] [S]teep cuts to emissions during the next decade are the only way to avoid a catastrophic collapse of Antarctic ice sheets and associated sea-level rise that will continue for thousands of years. [...] This would trigger a collapse that would go on for thousands of years, raising sea levels by 0.6 metres to 3 metres by the year 2300 depending on how high manmade greenhouse gas emissions remain. Our descendants living in the year 5000 will continue to suffer the consequences of today’s fossil fuel burning, as sea levels continue to rise up to nine metres above current levels. [...] The global sea level has risen roughly 20cm over the last century and is already causing problems for communities in low-lying areas. Only a little of this has so far been caused by melting ice; most comes from the expansion of oceans as they warm. [...] Antarctica’s two ice sheets, east and west, cover an area the size of the contiguous US and Mexico combined

But the action comes after the government has been forced to pay out millions in compensatory payments to staff made redundant without proper consultation. Working-class Americans feel screwed. I heard it across the entire country | US news | The Guardian
Donald Trump has exposed the opportunity gulf between those who make policy and those who live it – turning immigrants into scapegoats in the process [...] The disappointment, although often wrapped in anger over immigration, is at its core about diminished opportunity. It is consistent with the economic reality that has persisted over the last three decades: except for the very rich, Americans haven’t seen their wealth increase. The people I talked to are not entirely wrong; their particular job prospects and their particular wealth have been harmed. [...] The angry are mostly people who work with their hands, who feel stuck in a vise tightening from two sides: there is a greater number of people looking for the same jobs and there are fewer jobs available, since many of these jobs having moved overseas.

How The Socialist Surge is Growing - YouTube
via Robert Reich on.fb.me/1Pn6XFK - According to a New York Times investigation reported this morning, just 358 families and the businesses they control have contributed over half the money to the 2016 presidential election so far – mostly to Republicans who have pledged to pare regulations; cut taxes on income, capital gains and inheritances; and shrink Social Security and Medicare. On the other hand, two-thirds of Americans support higher taxes on those earning $1 million or more a year, according to a June New York Times/CBS News poll, and six in 10 favor more government intervention to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor. And according to the Pew Research Center, nearly seven in 10 favor preserving Social Security and Medicare benefits as they are. To an extent we haven’t seen since the Gilded Age of the 1890s, the upcoming election is between a tiny group of super-rich and the rest of us. Obese people and drug users who refuse treatment could have benefits cut | Society | The Guardian
A nanny state for those that cost the state (directly, and now), because it fits their message 'only work pays'! what a double standard. what a intellectual dishonesty and cynicism. And again putting it like it is a 'lifestyle choice' being addicted and or obese. That one chose consciously, in order not to 'work.' // if people work, and are overweight, have diabetes, obese, high blood pressure, take statins, runing their liver long-term with alcohol abuse (functioning alcoholic, drug user) etc etc - costing the NHS especially long-term (sick population) - it is ok, but if they don't work. it's not ok. // after all, substance abuse, in majority of cases has a mental health (history) & social environment (nurture) component to it. Much complexity to it. And cutting services to actually help & prevent people going down the route of abuse doesn't help. Cutting A, putting it back in B. // &! bit.ly/1JACXDU - UK proposals to strip obese claimants of benefits 'flawed and unethical'

Staatsverschuldung als Problem der Generationengerechtigkeit | Lars P. Feld | SWR Tele-Akademie - YouTube
henry paulson and tim geithner said they are in a moral hazard. put it the way to either nationalise (aka the end of American Dream, Failure part of capitalism) or bailout (gov loans and co like TARP). Rather the moral hazard was to either put current and future unborn generation in debt servitude they had nothing to do with and keep criminals private with all its benefits. Or really give a warning shot a privatise banks and end the profligacy of crony capitalism and Wall Streets shareholder value creation only and profit maximisation - without consequences. // and Europe looks towards USA and did the same; made banks whole again (because they were really - TBTF - and would pushed some EU countries into Great Depression/Insolvency. especially France & Belgium where bank liabilities were too big for public balance sheet) and took some of the debt onto its public balance sheet (and gave bailout loans) to be served by current & future unborn generation.

DSK and Dodo the Pimp: Sex and power in France - Newsnight - YouTube
complicit and impunity - see same in UK with abuse scandals and paedophiles up and down Britain's Society and especially Westminster - and Met Police looking away during recent history till back then during Thatcher's time and maybe even way back even more. What a picture of society and what it means in a persons life to have "power." And also include the Church! Sure, back then paedophiles, rapists and abusers of any kind often got away with it more or less because of the stigma as victim (you brought this on you) and the lack (non existent) of prosecution and support. Dark ages. Dark ages. That is recent history. Just one generation. Thinking about it is abhorring - that these people still shape our life's to some extent.

Middelhoff-Prozess: Das Urteil geht uns alle an - SPIEGEL ONLINE
[ Power Corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

BBC News - Midwife abortion objection case heard at Supreme Court
Almost 50 years after abortion became legal in England, Scotland and Wales, it remains a deeply emotive issue, both for its supporters and for those who object to abortion on conscientious grounds. Under Roman Catholic doctrine, life begins at conception, and no human being has the right to take the life of an unborn child. Although many Catholic women do seek abortions in the UK, the stance taken by the Roman Catholic Church has underpinned many of the pro-life groups which have challenged the legalisation of abortion and the interpretation of the 1967 Abortion Act. [...] Both are practising Roman Catholics and argued that they "hold a religious belief that all human life is sacred from the moment of conception and that termination of pregnancy is a grave offence against human life."

Amanda Bynes, Robin Williams, and the Spectacle of Mental Illness | Let's Queer Things Up!
[making money on the cost of other people ] // "People with co-occurring bipolar and schizophrenia have one of the highest suicide attempt rates of any group. 70.6% of these individuals will attempt suicide in their lifetime. You would think this would frighten us, and that we would be offering Bynes compassion on the mere basis that what she may be facing is, without a doubt, deadly. Yet the vast majority of press and articles surrounding Bynes’ mental state seems to ignore the stark reality of her struggle, and instead, opt to mock her erratic and unusual behavior. Rather than recognizing that she may have an illness, they have turned mental illness into a spectacle to watch, enjoy, and ridicule. [...] If no one has explained this to you, let me be the first to say that it is morally repugnant that we, as a society, are mocking mentally ill people. [...] It’s all fun and games until someone dies, as was the case with Robin Williams. [&too LGBTQIA << hate speech & crime]

BBC News - Met pays £425,000 to mother of undercover policeman's child
There are 12 other legal claims relating to undercover officers still being fought. But Jules Carey of Bindmans lawyers, acting for Jacqui, said the legal battles so far suggested Scotland Yard wanted to maintain a "never say never" stance to sexual relations after the Met's lawyers argued there could be a hypothetical extreme situation where such a tactic was needed. Mr Carey said: "The Metropolitan Police are prepared to criticise the conduct of an individual officer, Bob Lambert. They are even prepared to be critical of the unit he was from - but they refuse to condemn the practice itself. "It is time for the commissioner of Metropolitan Police to publicly commit to seeing the end of this shameful and abusive practice".

The Kesha Rape Allegations Reveal One Big Problem We Aren't Talking About - Mic
The statement does not say why Kesha allegedly wants out of her contract.  But one thing is clear: Kesha doesn't want to work with Dr. Luke any more. But she can't stop their partnership, because pop music is a business founded on the commodification of people. Whether or not Dr. Luke is guilty, this sort of exploitative dynamic is all too common.

[ Christopher Hitchens: 'Human decency is not derived from religion. His solicitor told a High Court judge that, despite his wife's fame, he had no wish to be a public figure. Reveal said it expressed regret for the distress and hurt it caused. [...] The magazine's article detailed his childhood, his life in France, where he was brought up, and gave information about his father, late mother, their personal finance and relationships. Rap Genius’ $40M round proves that you can’t kill a company by acting like a dick | PandoDaily
So it seems like America has a clear message for founders and executives: You can brag about urinating on college girls, call your co-founder “slutty,” and slam beers and cocaine with under-twenty-one employees — but just make sure business is still booming and history says you’ll be fine. At worst, you might have to leave the company like Parker, fading into the background with your ownership stake still intact, and multi-billion dollar payday still forthcoming.
