Investigatory Powers Bill: May defends surveillance powers - BBC News
Mrs May has said Britain's spies must continue to be allowed to hack into foreign computer networks, under so-called "bulk equipment interference warrants", as this was "a key operational requirement for GCHQ".
She told MPs that bulk powers had played a significant role in every major counter-terrorism investigation over the past decade, including seven terror plots foiled in the past 18 months, and in responding to the bulk of cyber attacks against UK interests.

Bad news for whistleblowers. Secret is far less secret than you think | PandoDaily
Only DAU thinks Secret or Whisper or any other consumer grade app, on a consumer grade tablet or phone, promising keeping them anonymity, uses these apps to 'blow the whistle.' ahhm troll, hate and gossip or even leak stuff. I thought Silicon Valley ppl are smart. No they just know how to code & design ... "to make the world better" ... sort of. “A court order without probable cause or even a subpoena may be enough for law enforcement or for a civil litigant to demand records.“ Conley went on to say that anonymous app companies need to make sure their backend data practices line up with the advertised purpose of their product: “They need to think through their own process. If you are offering a service that is about providing anonymous communication, then if you are retaining their identity and tying it to their communication, then you are kind of undermining the whole purpose of your service.”

Binge Media Culture Finds a Receptive Audience in Americans -
“With the things that get us to really crave the news, the tenor of the story tends to have a negative impact on the way we see the world more generally,” he said, referring to the controversial and scandalous subjects that draw in chronic readers and viewers. “We become more cynical.” Does he regard his own bingeing on these topics as escapist? + + “Absolutely,” he said. “You forget about your life for 30 minutes while you read about Chris Christie’s implosion.” Joshua Ferris’s forthcoming novel, “To Rise Again at a Decent Hour,” is about “the obsessive-compulsive nature of your own personality emerging through these platforms, and disliking the person who is taking advantage of them,” he said. Mr. Ferris, 39, confessed to bingeing on news, TV and YouTube videos, though he recently took a six-month purgative sabbatical.

Twitter Acquires Android Lockscreen App Cover, Moves Deeper Into Mobile Services | TechCrunch
[ THE HOME SCREEN on your PHONE is now the SCREEN YOU have to be on. PERIOD. Twitter is trying to get there with this deal and tech&talent acquisition. >> // // glancing on it many times a day just to ... ] “If that changes down the road, we’ll provide another update here,” the founders Todd Jackson, Gordon Luk and Edward Ho note in a blog post announcing the deal. You can read Josh’s review of how Cover works here. Cover is being somewhat cryptic in discussing what it will be working on at Twitter. “Twitter, like Cover, believes in the incredible potential of Android,” they write. “They share our vision that smartphones can be a lot smarter — more useful and more contextual — and together we’re going to make that happen. We’ll be building upon a lot of what makes Cover great, and we’re thrilled to create something even better at Twitter.”

Nadella breaking with the past of Microsoft business behaviour, which was dogmatic. Microsoft too slow to be first to the market, bc too big. As Messaging Wars Escalate, Social App Tango Raises $280 Million | Re/code
The moves essentially signal a new era for global Internet companies — one in which communication between people isn’t restricted to platforms like Facebook and Twitter, or even older messaging services like Gmail or AOL Instant Messenger. Instead, more companies have recognized the power of tapping into users’ existing social communication networks, found within the average person’s mobile device phone book. Apps like Tango, WhatsApp and Viber all comb a user’s mobile contact list to instantly connect people to their network of friends.

Gary Morgenthaler Explains Exactly How Siri Will Eat Google’s Lunch | TechCrunch
Then comes the question of what solves our biggest problems. Ultimately, Siri’s value is that of automation and removing “friction” on the Internet. Siri achieves this by: (1) understanding speech input in natural language form, (2) mapping user requests against its knowledge base (i.e., ontological domains) and (3) activating software “agents” to interact with Internet service providers to fulfill user requests.

All this is easier said than done. User problems in using the Internet are amplified on mobile devices because their screens and keyboards are small and cumbersome — and page downloads are slow.

Siri removes these frictions. It eliminates thumb-typing entirely, and it dramatically reduces the number of page downloads. In this sense, Siri finally and truly enables the mobile Internet.

How Apple and Google's Romance Turned To Hate - Apple - Gizmodo
Knowing how things developed, it's surprising that Schmidt stayed on Apple's board for so long. He resigned on August 2009, just as the war started to go open, first with Google grabbing mobile advertising company AdMob from Apple's hands (which forced Apple to buy Quattro Wireless). Then with Apple pissing on Google's parade by stealing Lala, the music streaming service that Larry and Sergei wanted to have.

App Store Is a Game Changer for Apple and Cellphone Industry -
or Apple, the review process is a necessary evil. The company places high value on what it describes as “customer trust,” or the idea that users have faith that an application distributed on the iPhone won’t crash the platform, steal personal information or contain illegal content.
