Erdoğan's crackdown: 'Free speech is being rebranded terrorism' – video | World news | The Guardian
Since Turkey’s failed military coup on Friday, more than 6,000 people in the civil service, security forces and military have been arrested. Writers and journalists fear that Turkey’s authoritarian president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, will use the failed putsch as grounds to dramatically escalate his continuing purge of opponents, particularly in the media. Phoebe Greenwood goes to Istanbul to meet the journalists risking life sentences to report and publish stories critical of the Erdoğan government

The Middle East is now Europe's backyard
We are accustomed to thinking about policy in binary terms - domestic politics on the one hand, foreign affairs on the other.
But as the tragic events in Brussels demonstrate once again, home and away are not so easily separated.
Indeed, in a fundamental sense, the problems of a fragmenting Middle East are fast-becoming Europe's problems too.

Defence review: PM could send 10,000 troops on to streets - BBC News
Trident - about 31bn // https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deterrence_theory - Up to 10,000 troops could be deployed on to British streets in the event of a Paris-style attack, David Cameron has said, as he announced plans for an extra £12bn for military equipment. The PM also said two 5,000-strong "strike brigades" would be created, as it was revealed the cost of renewing Trident could increase by £6bn. [...] the government's £178bn defence spending plans for the next decade // Comment: The extra £12bn going to the Ministry of Defence of course comes at a cost to other departments. Every penny that goes there has to come from somewhere else, and the depth of the cuts elsewhere will be revealed by George Osborne on Wednesday. Welfare, the police, and support for business are all likely to be hit. [...] what ground forces exist in Syria to take and hold land where IS is destroyed? Billions of pounds of new British military kit can't answer that. [ Drones and Bombs don't replace boots ]

Why Russia has started bombing Syria now - and what it hopes to achieve | World | News | The Independent
[ via truthdig ] Russia has also decided to move now following the failure of Mr Putin to reach any agreement with the US at the UN General Assembly meeting in New York where the threat of Isis has been high on the agenda. … [Russia’s] priority is to defeat Isis and then save the Assad regime in Damascus. Despite all the controversy over whether Assad should stay or go, the war would carry on in either case. This is very much a civil war with committed supporters on either side. In the short term Russia wants to stop Isis, and if possible defeat it – though this not likely to happen.

VIDEO: ‘Days of Revolt’ With Chris Hedges: ISIS, the New Israel - Truthdig
https://youtu.be/Go5vYcrwlOM // Hedges begins by pointing out how the Sykes-Picot agreement of 1916, responsible for “carving up the Middle East and turning countries into protectorates,” has been changed only twice—once with the Israeli independence and now with Islamic State. As Hedges put it, the tactics used to redraw the map in the Middle East are both effective and familiar, including the “use of foreign money, use of foreign fighters, tactics of ethnic cleansing and terrorism and this mythical vision—in the case of Israel, the recreation of Judea and Sumeria from the Bible, and in the case of ISIS, the recreation of the seventh-century caliphate.” Alnasseri agrees, opening his response with the observation that “to understand the pheonomenon of ISIS, we need to contextualize it within the setbacks and counter-revolution against the Arab revolutions.“ [...] 'Iraq can not be re-united.'

Syria crisis: Russia begins air strikes against Assad foes - BBC News
Russia has begun carrying out air strikes in Syria against opponents of President Bashar al-Assad, Moscow has confirmed. The strikes reportedly came in the rebel-controlled area of Hama province. Washington was informed in advance that they were about to take place. Syria's civil war has raged for four years, with armed groups - some of them Islamist, including the Islamic State (IS) group - fighting to overthrow the government. The US and its allies have insisted that President Assad should leave office, while Russia has backed its ally remaining in power. The latest developments came amid reports that President Assad had formally requested Russian military support. //&! Why Putin Wants to Meet Obama - Bloomberg View
Acting alone in Syria would be extremely risky for Russia. Putin can ill afford an unsuccessful military operation. Coordination with the U.S. would greatly increase the chances of success. For the U.S., though, an alliance with Putin comes with strings attached: Once Islamic State is defeated, Washington would need to discuss the post-war setup with Moscow, and they have a poor record of agreeing on anything. Also, if Obama retreated on his commitment to bring down Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and agreed to a smooth transition of power in Damascus, he would give Republicans a new pretext to accuse him of weakness.

The Refugee Crisis Is Changing Angela Merkel - Bloomberg View
Yesterday's meeting between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the prime ministers of German states yielded an important number. Every incoming asylum seeker will cost the federal government 670 euros per month ($747) plus a further 500 million euros for housing. Amazingly, the huge outlay is not testing Merkel's resolve to accept the refugees or her Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble's determination to balance the budget without new debt. But the chancellor is still going out on a limb: if Germans tire of the influx of Syrians and Iraqis, she will be held responsible. [...] So helping to resolve the Syrian conflict which is the source of the refugee crisis is becoming a matter of political survival for the chancellor and her post-retirement legacy. In a speech on Wednesday, she called for cooperation with Russia, Iran, Turkey and even Syrian President Bashar al-Assad himself -- whom no one else in the West wants to engage --to end the war. //&! bv.ms/1KXyf3p

U.S. and China Seek Arms Deal for Cyberspace - The New York Times
In the last year there have been devastating Chinese hacks of American computer systems, and the U.S. government has floated the idea of sanctioning China in response. Here's the apparent response: A noticeable downtick in significant hacks of American networks, and news that the U.S. and China are working on a cybersecurity arms deal, ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's Thursday arrival in America. The proposed agreement would supposedly prevent either nation from attacking the other's "critical infrastructure" during peacetime.

Vote to leave EU means Scotland will leave UK – Nick Clegg | Politics | The Guardian
Launching the Lib Dem’s EU campaign, the party’s leader, Tim Farron – who replaced Nick Clegg in July – will tell members that voting to remain in the EU would “secure Britain’s position as a world power and build on our role as a beacon of hope, freedom, tolerance and prosperity”. “It is not the time to turn our backs on Europe, and leave us isolated, sidelined and alone,” he will say. [ and play ball (runner for everything they need back-up/support) of the USA. No more standing in between USA and Europe and negotiator ... just see TTIP. ]

Why Readers Don’t Get the True Story — The Information
The costs of off-the-record reporting are increasingly greater than the benefits, as the culture of talking without attribution gives companies too much control. // lots of companies use this practice / PR ... for what? have good relationships, tend the relationships with reporters/journalists? Give them a sense of being in THEIR circle? From outsiders view it looks like 'patting on the head like a child?' // Sarah Lacy once talks about it that there must be more stuff than Techopus. But the cheerleaders within the bubble of success, fame, notoriety and money ... WILL not look, dig, investigate ... because they are hired as cheerleaders (pageviews business model)

Foreign Affairs Expert Leslie Gelb: Masters in Business (Audio) by Bloomberg View | Free Listening on SoundCloud
Leslie Gelb, wrote Pentagon Papers. Which Ellsberg leaked (Whistleblower) - bit.ly/1Lgsq2D // Back in the days, national interests and force was expressed in war and seldomly in economic embargos (Napoleon tried that against British Empire) and there were economic skirmishes (oil/diesel, rubber) in the run-up to WW2 and the first couple of months before USA officially entered WW2. TODAY! National interests are only expressed in economic terms with trade embargoes, tariffs, trade deals and protectionism. Only little military skirmishes here and there and when, the nation tries to hide them from the publics eye (through rouge nations for hire army/special forces, a nations secret services supplying the underground arms trade that doesn't show up on its balance sheet or one of their nations manufacturers. West excluded Russia from recent G8 summit in Munich and made it G7. Russia/Europe/USA playing game of chicken of economic escalation. Or using corporate actors & new cyber war!

bit.ly/1nh23fy compared to 7/7 in media & by everyday people. // The UK needs to tackle the “appalling radical narrative taking over minds of so many young people in our own country", [...] The UK was "united in shock and grief", he said, after 30 Britons were among 38 people killed by a gunman linked to Islamic State extremists in the Tunisian resort of Sousse on Friday. "existential threat", "There are some people who don't buy the terrorism but buy the extremist narrative." He called for a “full-spectrum” response to the Tunisia attack; crushing the "appalling death cult" of IS in Iraq & Syria but also fighting extremists’ “poisonous narrative” elsewhere in the world. // 'We beat it with full spectrum response' means also expanding the surveillance state, drone warfare & corporate state. Obama & Cameron not willing to intervene with sizeable military intervention (boots on the ground) bc of history/experience of Iraq War. will try to fight ISIS by backing local forces et al

Slashdot Story | German Military Braces For Peak Oil
"A study by a German military think tank leaked to the Internet warns of the potential for a dire global economic crisis in as little as 15 years as a result of a peak and an irreversible decline in world oil supplies. The study states that there is 'some probability that peak oil will occur around the year 2010 and that the impact on security is expected to be felt 15 to 30 years later. ... In the medium term the global economic system and every market-oriented national economy would collapse.' The report closely matches one from the US military earlier this year, which stated that surplus oil production capacity could disappear within two years and there could be serious shortages by 2015 with a significant economic and political impact."
