Energy sector faces struggle to find the female engineers of the future | Business | The Guardian
While the lack of female chief executives in the UK is a problem, the lack of female engineers is an even bigger concern, as Dorothy Thompson, chief executive of Drax group, knows only too well. The head of the UK’s largest power station is grappling with the question of how to attract more women into the energy sector.

Thompson says the six places available on the Drax apprenticeship scheme this year attracted just two female applicants compared with 76 men. The education is partly to blame, she says, but energy companies also need to do much more to change girls’ perceptions.

My first and last time at the Crunchies — TheLi.st @ Medium — Medium
At the Crunchies, comedian T.J. Miller, a star of the show “Silicon Valley” (which I watch and love), threw out a bunch of playful zingers in his opening act. But then at one point, he engaged with a woman (Gabi Holzwarth) a few rows in front of me by calling her a “bitch”. She responded increduously, “Did you just call me a bitch?” He then said, “Bitch, Asians aren’t supposed to be this entitled in the U.S. … Is this bitch from Palo Alto?” The audience laughed nervously. I was so uncomfortable I wanted to leave, but of course I couldn’t given that our award was coming up. [...] At Crunchies I saw a woman get called a "bitch" onstage, then I did AOL TV & the host mocked me for being pale and made fun of my purse. [...] [ << Show of insecurity by taking the cheap road. Why Anne-Marie Slaughter thinks the next phase of the ‘Women’s Movement’ must be a ‘Men’s Movement’ (Video) - Bizwomen
You may know Slaughter from her 2012 viral story in The Atlantic titled " Why Women Still Can't Have It All." Many of the thoughts expressed in that article — that superhuman qualities are required to be both a perfect mother and a top professional. [...] Slaughter said workplaces need to be "customizable" so employees feel they can work to serve both their family in a caregiving role and the company in a competitive role. Men need to be allowed the same flexibility as women, she said. "We've revolutionized women's lives over my lifetime. If you're going to move women into the workplace, you have to move men into the home to get real equality. We haven't changed men's lives in nearly the ways we've changed women's." Slaughter's advice to women and men is to build a career through interval training, taking time to work very hard at your job and then slowing down to take time for your personal life, reminding everyone that it's not all about an immediate race to the top.

Study Finds Something Disturbing Happens to Kids Forced into Traditional Gender Roles - Mic
The idea that gender is "imposed" on a person might be confusing to some people, particularly those who have always felt at home in their bodies. But a study conducted by the University of Warwick's Centre for the Study of Women and Gender proves Cox's point, concluding that children "with fixed ideas about what should be considered 'masculine' and 'feminine,' can actually be detrimental to their physical and mental health," according to ThinkProgress writer Tara Culp-Ressler.  >> http://thinkprogress.org/health/2014/08/07/3468380/gender-roles-health-risks // http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-Spirit_identity_theory

Leaving Toxic Open Source Communities, by Anonymous Author | Model View Culture
When the senior developer wouldn't respect a technical decision I had made, I was first politely firm, then more insistent, and finally loud and angry. The developer then told me, a woman developer, that I was being "too emotional." Talk about double standards! When I got that email, it was the last in a long series of run-ins with sexist developers in my community. I couldn't work in this community anymore without the threat of harassment. I was done. Fed up. So I voted with my feet, and I decided to leave. [...] I was a minority in tech, someone that others looked up to as a leader in open source. And the stereotype threat was causing me to re-think leaving my toxic community. I finally accepted I had to leave my community in order to protect my mental health. With that decision, my emotions started to come back in a very painful way. Every emotion was powerful, raw, and uncontrollable. I was guilty about letting my community down. ...

The Dispute Between Radical Feminism and Transgenderism
AND here the critique http://bit.ly/1tXlqLW & http://bit.ly/1ujpPJ9 // http://bit.ly/V1UxtS // http://bit.ly/1orNN4F // "In failing to provide a semblance of balance to the voices in the piece, this account becomes hopelessly skewed, and becomes little more than a radical feminist propaganda piece. Early on in her essay, Goldberg presents an extremely simplified and stereotyped view of trans women’s identities. She writes: “Trans women say that they are women because they feel female — that, as some put it, they have women’s brains in men’s bodies.” First, considering that the length of the article discusses trans people (and focuses heavily on trans women), to reduce the explanation of their complex experiences to three words — “they feel female” — is offensively reductionist. While such a passing nod to trans experiences might be not be out of place in a more LGBTQ-geared publication, in a more general consumption magazine[.]" + http://bit.ly/VkWUIA + http://huff.to/1Bo9aJr

The Future of Pando | Ugly.
The fact is, I’m getting a total pass for something I have repeatedly said was my responsibility, while my female business partner is receiving the full blame. It seems to me that either the person or persons spreading the smears about Pando has decided that a female employer is deserving of abuse and scorn in a way that a male boss isn’t, or they’ve cynically concluded that a female boss presents a much easier target for an Internet hate campaign. [...] In the past 72 hours, I’ve come to truly realize what female founders and CEOs in our industry deal with every day of their lives. That it took me this long to understand is another of my many failings. The ugliness has to stop. [ It is easier, faster to bash the weaker sex. especially if the women on top is not apologetic. it seems. men + anonymity of internet and the non-attachment, non-face-to-face situation, feel the urge to say stuff like X, about Sarah Lacy and the other week about Marissa Mayer, who overslept. ]

Do Not Despise Your Inner World: Advice on a Full Life from Philosopher Martha Nussbaum | Brain Pickings
Martha Nussbaum - Our emotional life maps our incompleteness: A creature without any needs would never have reasons for fear, or grief, or hope, or anger. But for that very reason we are often ashamed of our emotions, and of the relations of need and dependency bound up with them. Perhaps males, in our society, are especially likely to be ashamed of being incomplete and dependent, because a dominant image of masculinity tells them that they should be self-sufficient and dominant. So people flee from their inner world of feeling, and from articulate mastery of their own emotional experiences. The current psychological literature on the life of boys in America indicates that a large proportion of boys are quite unable to talk about how they feel and how others feel — because they have learned to be ashamed of feelings and needs, and to push them underground.

[...] Then Cox hit it out of the park when she said, “by focusing on bodies we don’t focus on the lived realities of that oppression and that discrimination.” [...] Trans people are more than just our bodies, and these two women showed that in the absolute best way possible. + http://katiecouric.com/videos/carmen-carreras-quest-to-become-a-victorias-secret-angel/ + http://katiecouric.com/videos/orange-is-the-new-black-laverne-cox/ + Carmen Carrera Discusses Transphobia On HuffPost Live - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9X29T3TU1c + http://rollingout.com/entertainment/carmen-carrera-responds-chelsea-handlers-transphobic-jokes/ + @7:25 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDy4re6C6sA

Kahn to gay footballers: 'Don't come out' - The Local
The former goalkeeper, who played 86 times for his country, told magazine Gala that he would advise homosexual players to not come out. “It may sound sad, but I wouldn’t advise him [a gay player] to come out.” Kahn added that homosexuality was no longer a “big deal” in society but said it would be “naive” to think that it was the same in professional sport. He said that a player who did come out would have to deal with opposition fans every Saturday in the stadium. “The atmosphere is heated. There are rivalries, which can lead people to do nasty things. On top of that, how will it go down with sponsors? What will it mean for your career? The situation is more difficult than it appears at first glance.” >> SEE Comment "Using homophobia to justify keeping gays quiet and compliant and exactly where he feels they should be IS HOMOPHOBIC. That man is an idiot." >> Angela Merkel, IOC, DFB - all Fahdenscheinig. Specious. meretricious. WORD, Charters. But no Action - which would speak louder.

"Masculinity in crisis" cannot justify killing your family
“some men are unable to come to terms with different and developing notions of the institution of the family, where women increasingly play a much more dynamic role than they had in the past”. I don’t suspect Wilson of ulterior motives in saying this, nor do I feel he is making excuses for the 59 men studied by his team. All the same, I find the reporting of his conclusions shocking, particularly in the direct use of the “masculinity in crisis” phrase.

Laverne Cox: Trans people should not put their dreams on hold because of who they are
And all that’s about other people’s expectations of who he’s supposed to be, it’s not about who he actually is. So if he could just let go of all that, he’d probably be a lot happier – but then he’d have to question the privilege that he’s been given, and a lot of people don’t want to do that. And I have to say if I grew up with all this privilege, I don’t know if I’d want to question it either.

What About the Guys Who Do Fit the 'Gay Stereotype'? - Maya Dusenbery - The Atlantic
[ People like to put people in Labeled Boxes. ] "People think gayness has something to do with femininity when really we just need to erase that stereotype from our minds," he said. "LGBT people come in all different types and shapes and forms." [...] "In sports right now, there are two different stereotypes—that there are no gay male athletes, and every female athlete is a lesbian," [...] "Female professional athletes are already gender non-conforming. Male ones are still worshiped as exemplars of traditional masculinity." [...] There's no doubt those are stereotypes that need unpacking. Sociologists have long noted that homophobia is a fundamental ingredient of masculinity in modern American culture. [...] Ever since we've been asking about it in public opinion polls, men have been more likely than women to espouse anti-gay views—a fact that buttressed the theory that masculinity is intimately connected with homophobia[.]
