Fire engines in Scotland 'regularly' unstaffed, claims Fire Brigades Union - BBC News
Its Scottish secretary Stephen Thomson told the BBC that a lack of cover meant appliances in the Grampian and Strathclyde areas could not be used. A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) insisted it maintained "the right resources". He added that people could rest assured there was "excellent" nationwide cover. However, Mr Thomson said an "insufficient number" of firefighters in Scotland was becoming a "serious problem".

More patients in Scotland given antidepressants - BBC News
814,181 patients in 2014/15. Since 2009/10, use of antidepressants has increased by 28.5%. Two-thirds of the patients given the drugs were women, with use peaking in the 50-54 age group. The figures indicated antidepressant use was associated with deprivation. They recorded 225,969 patients in the poorest parts of Scotland receiving the drugs, compared with 110,507 in the least deprived areas. The total cost of antidepressants to the NHS in Scotland was £40.8m. The use of lower-cost drugs means this figure has fallen by one-third over the past 10 years. [...] "We are now looking at the flabbergasting statistic of more than one in seven people in Scotland being prescribed antidepressants this year. [...] "The fact that we have seen such substantial increases in prescriptions raises real concerns over whether this reflects shortages in other services, //&! bit.ly/1GJ9ouW - doubling in 10 years from 10 to 20 million daily doses for NHS Grampian [...] without other forms of treatment.

Paris climate summit: UN negotiations 'need redesign' - BBC News
[ only bottom up works ... till the tide is big enough. same with health and fitness (which in part has to be about looking good/fit). self-esteem. ] The UN climate negotiations are heading for failure and need a major redesign if they are to succeed, scientists say. The pledges that individual countries are offering ahead of the Paris climate summit in December are too entrenched in self interest instead of being focussed on a common goal. The researchers say the science of cooperation is being ignored. Instead, they say the negotiations should focus on a common commitment on the global price of carbon. This means countries would agree on a uniform charge for carbon pollution, a scheme that would encourage polluters to reduce their emissions. The comments from researchers at the University of Cambridge, UK, University of Maryland, US, and University of Cologne, in Germany, are published in the journal Nature. //&! bbc.in/1jYOUtz

How Uber’s Autonomous Cars Will Destroy 10 Million Jobs And Reshape The Economy by 2025 « CBS San Francisco
[The 2nd Industrial Revolution enabled by Moore's Law from 2000-2030/50: autonomous cars, software eats the world, marketplaces, share economy, automation, robotics, AI/augmented reality, local - just in time manufacturing via 3D printing, renewable energy and 100% recycling of everything.] The transition is already beginning to happen. Elon Musk, Tesla Motor’s CEO, says that their 2015 models will be able to self-drive 90 percent of the time.1 And the major automakers aren’t far behind – according to Bloomberg News, GM’s 2017 models will feature “technology that takes control of steering, acceleration and braking at highway speeds of 70 miles per hour or in stop-and-go congested traffic.”2 Both Google3 and Tesla4 predict that fully-autonomous cars – what Musk describes as “true autonomous driving where you could literally get in the car, go to sleep and wake up at your destination” – will be available to the public by 2020. Don’t let the price tag fool you: Snapchat isn’t a late stage company | PandoDaily
[Playing like its Day 1] // [U]nlike companies like Uber, Dropbox, AirBnB, and, in another era, Facebook, Snapchat is just three years old and has raised just a handful of funding rounds from just seven investors up until this point. It’s also never generated a dime of revenue. One thing Snapchat does have (in spades), is users, with the Journal citing new information that the company has 100 million monthly active users – and two-thirds as many daily active users. [...] With massive trends like the global proliferation of mobile, the addressable market for the most successful companies is bigger than ever, meaning that the funding rounds and valuations are rising in lock-step. And with deals like Whatsapp’s recent $19 billion sale to Facebook – though it was generating meaningful revenue at that time – the venture and M&A math at the top of these markets is being governed by its own set of rules. [AKA Possibilities, Business Dreams] "[Ads] without losing its “cool-factor."
