Rezension ǀ Was wäre ein selbstbestimmtes Leben?
DECLINE of EMPIRES: The Signs of Decay - YouTube
Chalmers Johnson, author of Blowback, Sorrows of Empire and Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic , talks about the similarities in the decline of the Roman and Soviet empires and the signs that the U.S. empire is exhibiting the same symptoms: overextension, corruption and the inability to reform [ in face of global change and internal ideology.] - min 15 + fiscal overstretch that does not serve people (economic multiplier, ie NSA, military bases, personnel, and long-term obligations ie pension and benefits) ... and unable to change bc of ideology married with identity (the American Dream is still alive and this country is fair and meritocratic) as well unable to keep up with global economic competition as a whole (take out Silicon Valley). & unable to smell crony capitalism (no shared economic interest), corruption and bribery when its showing up (ie TTIP, NAFTA and co.) &!
Shift In Gay Marriage Support Mirrors A Changing America : NPR
The latest polls indicate 58 percent of Americans support same-sex marriage. In 1977, that number was 13 percent. One researcher says that jump in support isn't the result of a generational gap — it's that many who once opposed gay marriage have changed their minds or softened their opposition. - gay rights movement championed the individual rights. - many high profile people coming out of closet may have contributed to the "normal" image of gay people and gay relationships. plus high profile hetero people have gay friends and turn into a public ally.

[...]

! Go-Ahead signal for future bailouts in return for giving up fiscal sovereignty !

Should Majorities Decide Everything? - YouTube
Under a democratic system of government, how is an individual protected from the tyranny of the majority? According to Professor Munger, democratic constitutions consist of two parts: one defining the limits within which decisions can be made democratically, and the other establishing the process by which decisions will be made. In the United States Constitution, the individual is protected from majority decisions. Professor Munger warns, however, that these protections are slowly being stripped away as American courts of law fail to recognize the limits of what can be decided by majority rule. Professor Munger uses the case of Kelo v. New London to illustrate the dangers of confusing majority rule with a democratic system.

BBC News - A Point Of View: The trouble with freedom
We've come to believe that freedom is the natural human condition, which only tyrants prevent everyone from enjoying - but when a tyrant is toppled, we can't know what will come next, says John Gray.

[...]

For Russell, as for Mill, liberty was one thing, democracy another. It's a deeply unfashionable view, but I think essentially correct.

[...]

We need freedom because our goals and values are highly diverse and often quite different from those of the people around us. Having a voice in collective decisions - the basis of democracy - is a fine thing, but it won't protect your freedom if the majority is hostile to the way you choose to live.

[...] threats to freedom [can come from many different angles.]

[...] we've forgotten our own history and neglect the dangers we currently face. [...] liberty is a fragile achievement.

Van Jones: Protecting Society from Corporate 'Tyranny' - YouTube
Van Jones, Founding President of Rebuild the Dream, criticizes the influence corporations and special interests have on our political system. Jones argues that "the Tea Party is correct, our liberties are under threat," but their "negative" rhetoric is misguided.

***

In 2010, the United States Supreme Court held in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission that laws prohibiting corporate and union political expenditures were unconstitutional. Citizens United made it legal for corporations and unions to spend from their general treasuries to finance independent expenditures, but did not alter the prohibition on direct corporate or union contributions to federal campaigns; those are still prohibited.
