Cam Newton's sexism controversy is the perfect parable for our time | Sport | The Guardian
How is this story – a workplace matter that really should’ve been resolved privately – even a thing, you ask? Because conflict, in black and white, still makes the most compelling spectacle. Sports have promoted them so well over the years that, well, it was just a matter of time before the less entertaining areas of life got in the game. And so people like CNBC’s Jim Cramer further divided stocks and bonds into winners and losers. Politics are less about issues than optics, as much for the newsmakers as the networks vying to see how many pundits they can cram onto their pre- and post-game show desks. Outrage culture is all the rage, and so the news never rests. No story, however false the premise or equivalency, is too small. This story, suddenly the week’s biggest NFL headline, is proof.

More than politics, Theresa May’s true strength is her grasp of British culture | Rafael Behr | Opinion | The Guardian
While John Major and Tony Blair struggle with their Brexit defeat, the prime minister has read the national mood and is successfully navigating it // SHE IS NAVIGATING IT? OTHERS WOULD SAY like Blair SHE SITS THERE AS PASSENGER. // Culture and identity tend to be treated as peripheral expressions of whatever is happening in the economy, which is sometimes true but not always. May understands that. She is a more astute culture warrior than economist, and for now that is serving her well. // HAPPY TO DO HARD BREXIT EVEN IF IT HURTS THE ECONOMY "make the best of it" // To win power from New Labour, Cameron adapted to Blairish mode: self-consciously modern, socially liberal, metropolitan and relaxed about Europe. [...] There was always something absurd about “anti-establishment” language in the plummy tones of Boris Johnson or Nigel Farage. But their campaign did capture a rebellious spirit. Partly it was generalised frustration at the state of everything; partly it was counter-revolution – the backlash by people who sensed that their lives, interests and anxieties were the punchline to a joke at a fancy London dinner party. [...] liberals haven’t grasped the scale of their defeat. That is good for May, who navigates through the middle.

Japan's IPO of the Century - Bloomberg View
The privatization couldn't have come at a more opportune moment. Even Nobel laureate Paul Krugman, an early Abenomics cheerleader, said this week that he's "really, really worried" about Tokyo’s chances of ending a two-decade slump. The hope is that the listing, which will be targeted at individual Japanese, will encourage households to invest more of their savings. Perhaps more important, it could enliven the country's stagnant banking sector. Japan is among the developed world's most overbanked nations, with more than 100 sleepy regional players (84 of which are publicly traded) servicing 126 million people. Thanks to the Bank of Japan's zero-interest-rate policies, profit margins are shrinking even faster than the population.

Shift In Gay Marriage Support Mirrors A Changing America : NPR
The latest polls indicate 58 percent of Americans support same-sex marriage. In 1977, that number was 13 percent. One researcher says that jump in support isn't the result of a generational gap — it's that many who once opposed gay marriage have changed their minds or softened their opposition. - gay rights movement championed the individual rights. - many high profile people coming out of closet may have contributed to the "normal" image of gay people and gay relationships. plus high profile hetero people have gay friends and turn into a public ally.

Generation LGBTQIA - NYTimes.com
Rise of post gay-rights movement because of the lack of T&Q and other in real-world LGBT environement. Because gender-nonconforming (Non-Cis) people feel lost in a publicly L&G-only accepting world. YOU DON'T NEED TO UNDERSTAND to ACCEPT, as long as we do not hurt you. Welcome to LGBTQ+ ... !

If the gay-rights movement today seems to revolve around same-sex marriage, this generation is seeking something more radical: an upending of gender roles beyond the binary of male/female. The core question isn’t whom they love, but who they are — that is, identity as distinct from sexual orientation.

But what to call this movement? Whereas “gay and lesbian” was once used to lump together various sexual minorities — and more recently “L.G.B.T.” to include bisexual and transgender — the new vanguard wants a broader, more inclusive abbreviation. “Youth today do not define themselves on the spectrum of L.G.B.T.,”

BBC News - Why does the UK love the monarchy?
"What is it about our country that we retain such affection for a system which appears at odds with the meritocratic principles of a modern liberal democracy?"

[...]

Bagehot had identified a developing national characteristic. As colonial power and the riches of empire declined, there was an increasing desire to define greatness as something other than wealth and territory. Britain wanted to believe it was, intrinsically, special. "People yield a deference to what we may call the theatrical show of society," he wrote. "The climax of the play is the Queen."

[Everything around the Monarchy, the Queen and hereditary authority acts as IT for] national communion. [Simply British national life held high with pride.] "Uniquely ours."

The explanation, I think, is that the 1950s were also a period in which the country was anxious about how global, institutional and social change might threaten its identity.

Monarchy represented a bulwark against rapid and scary change.
