“transsexual.”

“We don’t use that anymore,” they said. This was backed up by a young cisgender man, a UCLA queer studies major, who declared that the term was objectionable because it “medicalizes” trans people and inappropriately ties recognition of someone’s genital status — which is private — to their gender identity. So it was not only archaic but offensive.

Why Theresa May is a true heir to Richard Nixon | Aditya Chakrabortty | Opinion | The Guardian
Trump wasn’t playing politics: he was prosecuting a culture war – and a culture war is anti-politics. [...] First came her speech about how “the country is coming together”, even while her political opponents were not. Her cheerleaders were in the press the next day, baying for “Blue murder” and for her to “Crush the saboteurs”. I watched all this from the US; and in the land where Democrats are now routinely labelled “treasonous” it all sounded eerily familiar: us v them; the people v Westminster; leavers v remainers. [...] “forged a public language that promised mastery of the strange new angers, anxieties, and resentments wracking the nation”. [...] Nixon appealed to the “silent majority”. [...] “less about a traditional left-right battle and more about identity and values” [<< Rentnerrepublik]

School budget squeeze 'is reducing pupils' subject choice' - BBC News
The English Baccalaureate or EBacc was brought in by the coalition government in 2010 for pupils achieving at least a GCSE C grade in English, maths, the sciences, a language and geography or history.
The percentages of pupils entering and achieving this standard are among measures used by government to determine a school's performance.
The poll suggests pupils' options are being narrowed throughout the secondary curriculum.

Disability services transform students' lives – we must protect them | Higher Education Network | The Guardian
https://www.theguardian.com/housing-network/2017/apr/07/conservative-government-failing-the-poorest-through-housing-benefit-cuts - As if cuts threatening crucial services in universities aren’t bad enough, the word ‘disability’ is itself now at risk – despite its key role [...] These days I work for disability services within a university. But what we offer is at risk – both from government cuts and changes within higher education.

The government has made £30m of cuts to Disabled Students Allowance since August 2015, which has resulted in the loss of funding for specialist IT equipment and non-medical help such as mentoring, study skills support, note-takers, interpreters and physical assistance. Now, the term “disabled” is also under threat. My manager has had to challenge university directors who want to get rid of the word entirely.

Thousands of doctors trained in Europe 'may quit UK after Brexit' | Politics | The Guardian
The BMA’s findings are based on a survey it undertook of 1,193 EEA doctors working in the UK. When asked if they were thinking about leaving the UK following last year’s referendum vote, 500 (42%) said yes, 309 (26%) said no, 278 (23%) were unsure, while the other 106 did not answer. [...] “While thousands of overseas and EU doctors work across the UK to provide the best possible care for patients, many from the EU are left feeling unwelcome and uncertain about whether they and their families will have the right to live and work in the UK after Brexit,” said Porter. European doctors feel significantly less appreciated by the UK government now than before the referendum. Their average rating on that score has fallen from seven out of ten before the vote to leave the EU to less than four out of ten now. & less committed to stay.

Toxic political agenda is dehumanising entire groups, Amnesty warns | World news | The Guardian
NGO’s annual report warns that aggressive political rhetoric is creating a ‘hostile climate for refugees and migrants’ [...] She pointed particularly to violence stirred up by Donald Trump, right-wing Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán, who called a controversial referendum on refugees, and the Philippines leader Rodrigo Duterte who has launched a war on drugs that has cost thousands of lives.

“This report documents the very real human consequences of politicians like Trump, Orbán, Duterte, wielding a toxic agenda that hounds, scapegoats and dehumanises entire groups of people,” Hassan said.

The attacks threaten not just human lives but the value system enshrined in international law after the second world war, warned the NGO.

How to Listen to Donald Trump Every Day for Years - The New York Times
We have to stop thinking that what President Trump says has any deeper significance [...] One major concern: His barking style lends itself to expressing casual hatred too easily. Also, Mr. Obama had much less room to be “authentic.” Mr. Trump has the privilege of talking as he pleases with no concern for how he sounds. He can string his impressions together as they come, while a black politician who sounds too “street” gets only so far. (Hillary Clinton, too, was boxed in, by gender. If she had used traits associated with the casual speech of women she would have been branded as trivial.) // language and bar for black presidents much higher - https://youtu.be/65I5aEYiaIs

The problem with English
Britain has its own problems with English. Its twin centres of political power, Westminster and the tabloid newspapers, are almost entirely monolingual. Brits therefore voted for Brexit blithely unaware of how other European countries would respond. The Brexiter fantasy broadly went like this: “We’ll stop immigration, keep free trade with Europe, and sign whizzo new trade deals with everybody else.”

Britain does have a coterie of multilingual experts (mostly diplomats) who knew this wouldn’t fly. But precisely because these people understand European thinking, they are distrusted by Westminster and the tabloids. A case in point is last week’s resignation of Sir Ivan Rogers, the UK’s permanent representative to the European Union.

Just as Donald Trump’s people have ignored the US state department, the UK’s Foreign Office — the one bit of the British state packed with foreign knowledge — has been sidelined ahead of the Brexit negotiations. Instead, the new department for exiting the EU will lead. Its boss, David Davis, is the man who said the Germans would give the UK a good deal because they sell cars in Britain. “The British political class is astonishingly ignorant of the EU, whether they are pro it or against,” says Charles Grant of the Centre for European Reform.

All Android operating systems infringe Java API packages, Oracle says | Ars Technica UK
The ongoing legal saga known as the Oracle-Google copyright battle took a huge leap Wednesday when Oracle claimed the last six Android operating systems are "infringing Oracle's copyrights in the Java platform." That's according to the latest paperwork Oracle filed in the five-year-old closely watched case that so far has resulted in the determination that Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) are, indeed, copyrightable. [...] The latest legal brouhaha comes two months after the Supreme Court declined to review Google's contentions that assigning copyright to APIs, sets a dangerous precedent and allows "copyright monopolies over the basic building blocks of computer design and programming." [...] [&] fair use right [came up][.] Complicating matters more, however, is the fact that there's no clear answer as to what constitutes fair use. [...] [I]t's decided on a case-by-case basis.
The Supreme Court is about to tackle online threats for the first time | The Verge
The issue before the Supreme Court is whether "a true threat" requires finding that the threatener subjectively intended to be threatening. Elonis is arguing for a subjective intent requirement, claiming that his posts were meant as rap lyrics and not as threats, while the prosecutors are arguing for an "objective" standard—a threat counts as a threat if a "reasonable person" would think the statement is a threat. The government is arguing that it’s enough to use an objective standard, with an exception for "idle or careless talk, exaggeration, something said in a joking manner or an outburst of transitory anger." However, when it comes to the Internet, where context or tone may be more difficult to perceive, this objective standard has obvious drawbacks [...] [UK has] law that forbids electronic messages that are "grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene, or menacing character," [...] "with the intent to intimidate." [...] "[...] most likely to inspire fear of bodily harm."

After celebrity nude leaks, Apple is finally taking security a little more seriously | PandoDaily
Now it seems that Apple is at least attempting to make its efforts to fix obvious security problems with its service a little easier to understand. I’m sure that has more to do with the allegations that it was responsible for the reprehensible leak of stolen nude photographs than with a new sense of responsibility to consumers, but we’ll have to take what we can get. Maybe the lesson will stick and the company will decide to be a little more forthcoming in the future. There is no reasonable expectation of perfect security in modern society, but we can at least strive for transparency from companies like Apple when our privacy is threatened. Better to know that something can’t be kept secure than to think it’s safe and remain ignorant of any threats.

What Facebook’s Messenger debacle says about the company… both the brilliant and the terrible | PandoDaily
But more to the point is what the whole thing says about Facebook. There are two important takeaways: One troubling and one impressive. One that speaks to the company’s greatest Achilles Heel as long as I’ve covered it, and one that speaks to its greatest strength. The first is just how much people distrust and are predisposed to dislike Facebook. [...] But the problem is Facebook is as synonymous with disrespecting your privacy today as Microsoft was for abusing it’s monopolist position in the post-Netscape days. [...] ADOPTION AND MOBILE HOMESCREEN // >> But right now, they are all on going parallel experiments that are ultimately competing to be the thing we open the most everyday when we are waiting in line, killing time, or want to shout out a video, photo or emoji to a pal.

How Jonah Peretti and BuzzFeed Got to $850 Million | Re/code
BuzzFeed +500 people. Even if you want to slight the company as nothing more than a Reddit repackager, someone has to do that repackaging. But if you’re only looking at BuzzFeed as a media company, then that $850 million might seem optimistic. Last year, people around the company pegged BuzzFeed’s 2013 revenue at $60 million, and now they’re supposedly on track for $120 million. Which means Dixon and his co-workers at Andreessen Horowitz are likely valuing Jonah Perreti’s company at something like 10x trailing 12-month sales. Investors value the New York Times at 1.2x sales. Time Inc. is at 0.77x. Time Warner, which mints money, is at 2x. + Are There Internet Dialects? http://youtu.be/SDPasRas5u0 Transporting Internet language, dialects, memes etc and ideas how to present stuff in an enlightening manner to mainstream. Google - intent // Facebook - like ... a link ... following ... same as Twitter. "Thumpstopper" = 'Showstopper' // And Content (blog, press) - is the native ad and advertorial // "With its trove of knowledge about the likes, histories and social connections of its 1.3 billion users worldwide, Facebook executives argue, it can help advertisers reach exactly the right audience and measure the impact of their ads — while also, like TV, conveying a broad brand message. Facebook, which made $1.5 billion in profit on $7.9 billion in revenue last year, sees particular value in promoting its TV-like qualities, given that advertisers spend $200 billion a year on that medium." Data collector or data protector? Google wants to keep the Web more secure with Project Zero | PandoDaily
Google’s commitment to degrading personal privacy might make it seem like a strange fit for something like Project Zero, which will inevitably help people keep some information private. But that misses the point of Google’s efforts to gain consumer trust. It doesn’t need to force its way into our digital houses; it’s already been invited in and told to make itself feel at home.

The Future of Pando | Ugly.
The fact is, I’m getting a total pass for something I have repeatedly said was my responsibility, while my female business partner is receiving the full blame. It seems to me that either the person or persons spreading the smears about Pando has decided that a female employer is deserving of abuse and scorn in a way that a male boss isn’t, or they’ve cynically concluded that a female boss presents a much easier target for an Internet hate campaign. [...] In the past 72 hours, I’ve come to truly realize what female founders and CEOs in our industry deal with every day of their lives. That it took me this long to understand is another of my many failings. The ugliness has to stop. [ It is easier, faster to bash the weaker sex. especially if the women on top is not apologetic. it seems. men + anonymity of internet and the non-attachment, non-face-to-face situation, feel the urge to say stuff like X, about Sarah Lacy and the other week about Marissa Mayer, who overslept. ]
