James Dawson criticises parents who attacked his LGBT guide for children | Books | The Guardian
“In 2015, when you read of people comparing gay people to paedophiles you just despair,” “I always think, as a community, we’ve come so far and achieved so much, but then you read something like that and realise there is still such small-mindedness and hatred left to contend with.” Dawson, who recently came out as transgender, pointed to the young LGBT people of Alaska “and the message they’re receiving from this furore: they must be so terrified to come out if this is the reaction they think they’ll get”. [...] Libraries have always been the natural sanctuary of marginalised young people and long may they remain open

Paris Lees: On Germaine Greer and the Hypocrisy of the 'Left' | VICE | United Kingdom
the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, pointed out that freedom of expression is not absolute and words can lead to violence: "History has shown us time and again the dangers of demonising foreigners and minorities." [...] People can and do change. Bigots don't. That is what makes them bigots. Germaine Greer has been shitting on trans people for over 40 years. Germaine Greer is a bigot. [...] The way people think about trans people and the way people treat trans people are clearly completely unrelated. // via redd.it/3tlbcg //&! apperently Richard Dawkins blocked her on Twitter after that article; bit.ly/1XnkhKE

Charlie Sheen discloses HIV positive diagnosis: 'It's a hard three letters to absorb' | Culture | The Guardian
Today Show host Matt Lauer asked Sheen why he continued to bring people including prostitutes to his home even though they were threatening him. Sheen said it was because he was depressed. He said that the period in March 2011 when he appeared on television and online making absurd claims and going on long tirades was not tied to his HIV status. “I wish I could blame it on that – that was more roid rage,” he said. [...] CBS fired Sheen from the long-running sitcom Two and a Half Men in March 2011 after the Golden Globe-winning actor had a public meltdown and criticised the show’s creator, Chuck Lorre. Filming had been disrupted in the previous year as Sheen, who was the highest-paid actor on television at the time, received treatment for drug addiction. //&! As medical advances help thousands of people, it would be disastrous to revert to bigoted attitudes in public and the media - bit.ly/1Y5qk8S - If a celebrity – or anybody else – has HIV, it really is none of our business.
