Uber, the Rashomon | PandoDaily
[ low skill, routine job ] When an Uber glides to its appointed pickup point, what do we see? Do we see an innovator hastening the inexorable shift to a new information-based economy? Or an arrogant bully using cheap capital, greed, and a dangerous, misogynist culture of convenience to consolidate a trillion dollar market? Or do we see both? [...] I’m sure pure Uber defenders exist, but the truth is, most of us are worried about the sheer expression of capitalistic force that the company represents. [...] Uber is the poster child for our global conversation about the role of work in our society, and about the kind of company we want to create, work at, and celebrate. [SV] its male-dominated, aggressive philosophy of “breaking things fast” and “asking for forgiveness rather than permission.” Uber feels inevitable — a uniquely of-the-moment company, a mirror held up to the Valley’s aggregate psyche.

Silicon Valley’s Maturity Problem | Re/code
The common diagnosis is that the Valley has a maturity problem, where first-time managers with big responsibilities and budgets build cultures of excessive behavior. But the reality is much more complicated. Rapid growth, a total absence of training, a cultural deficit and employees too focused on perks are a few contributors. Valley companies that want to continue down this path of impressive growth and success need to address these issues. [...] For companies, growing quickly in a very short period of time is a serious HR challenge. It’s hard to hire big numbers of talented employees who are a perfect cultural fit. It consumes significant HR resources and can limit that team’s ability to do anything else, like focus on training, culture or employees’ engagement.

What’s at Stake in the Ellen Pao Case | Re/code
the clubby world of venture capital, a male-dominated culture that has often been criticized as an insular fraternity of privileged white men despite its veneer of being a meritocracy. [...] While gender inequality has always been an issue in Silicon Valley, it has now come to dominate more of the conversation in the industry. Venture capital firms in particular have appallingly few female partners. [...] But Kleiner Perkins still has more to lose. Though it is an icon of Silicon Valley, having provided funding for historic winners like Netscape, AOL, Amazon, Sun and Google, it has, in recent years, been upstaged by younger and flashier firms. Being cast as a bastion of old-world discrimination does little to improve the image.

Venture capital and the great big Silicon Valley asshole game | PandoDaily
(( via pando.com/2015/02/12/how-silicon-valleys-counterculture-went-corporate-and-ruined-everything/ )) --- This is a complex topic with no real “right” or “wrong.” You have to consider what the job of a VC is. It’s not to give inner city kids a helping hand; it’s not to make mom-and-pop dreams a reality; it’s not to help nice guys. It’s to maximize returns and fund companies that have an outsized chance of creating billion-dollar plus outcomes in a decade or less. There is a certain personality type that frequently builds these companies—a mix of outsized arrogance, steel-eyed determination, and even some element of delusion. Rational thinkers don’t usually think they can upend whole industries. People who get impacted by social pressure will be talked out of an idea long before it comes to fruition.

How Silicon Valley’s counterculture went corporate and ruined everything | PandoDaily
Politicians, entrepreneurs, artists, activists, hippies, and corporations all working together to make the world a better place? In 2015, that arrangement seems unthinkable. So where did the dream of tech-powered togetherness go wrong? [...] [...] // As of last November, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco was $3,350 [£2200]. [...] So contrary to Gosney’s and Archer’s dream of a techno-utopia that benefits every slice of San Francisco’s population, the tech boom — along with various city statutes that limit residential housing — have made it harder than ever for artists and other members of the counterculture to live in the city. These are the very people, mind you, who helped spark the region’s technological revolution. And that’s saying nothing of the struggles felt by teachers, social workers and other non-tech workers struggling to stay afloat as housing prices skyrocket. [...] [C]ity officials and outdated statutes are as much to blame as tech companies

What Silicon Valley Thinks of Women
Despite that discouraging fact, the two women spent their 20s deep inside the valley’s bro community—a culture that has been described as savagely misogynistic. In inverse ratio to the forward-looking technology the community produces, it is stunningly backward when it comes to gender relations. Google “Silicon Valley” and “frat boy culture” and you’ll find dozens of pages of articles and links to mainstream news articles, blogs, screeds, letters, videos and tweets about threats of violence, sexist jokes and casual misogyny, plus reports of gender-based hiring and firing, major-league sexual harassment lawsuits and a financing system that rewards young men and shortchanges women. &! &! http://www.ravishly.com/2015/01/29/glassbreakers-silicon-valley-women-newsweek &! http://techcrunch.com/video/apple-earnings-snapchat-discover-woman-in-tech/518628679/

My first and last time at the Crunchies — TheLi.st @ Medium — Medium
At the Crunchies, comedian T.J. Miller, a star of the show “Silicon Valley” (which I watch and love), threw out a bunch of playful zingers in his opening act. But then at one point, he engaged with a woman (Gabi Holzwarth) a few rows in front of me by calling her a “bitch”. She responded increduously, “Did you just call me a bitch?” He then said, “Bitch, Asians aren’t supposed to be this entitled in the U.S. … Is this bitch from Palo Alto?” The audience laughed nervously. I was so uncomfortable I wanted to leave, but of course I couldn’t given that our award was coming up. The guy who accused Sarah Lacy of “playing victim” over Uber forgot to disclose he’s “bros” with the company’s two most senior execs | PandoDaily

That attitude manifests itself when the company is fighting taxi regulations or other obstacles the taxi establishment places in its path. But it also seeps into the way it views everyone it comes into contact with, including journalists. But part of it is that there simply isn’t anybody in Silicon Valley willing to tell Uber’s principals to grow up. They have a hot company that is disrupting an outmoded industry — and, therefore, they are lionized, not matter how boorish their behavior. Women 'belittled, underappreciated and underpaid in tech industry', Guardian readers say | Technology | The Guardian
“Beyond structural gender disparities, many respondents complained of a ‘macho, misogynist culture’, with bosses organizing events at strip clubs, and frequent commentary on women’s bodies the norm. Killing the Messenger at Mozilla, by Tim Chevalier | Model View Culture
The tech industry has a hero problem, and during my time there, Mozilla was no exception. Famously, Eich developed the JavaScript language in ten days, in order to meet a Netscape release deadline. This is a textbook example of how tech valorizes individual "heroes", always male, who can put in intense effort on a problem over a short period of time but not work with others on a solution in the long term. I have no doubt that Eich's work on JavaScript was solid, but I also see no reason to think that he was the only person who could have done the same thing. In fact, there are probably people who could have done better, but were not accorded the privileges in life needed for doing so. As far as I'm aware, Eich himself has maintained a humble attitude about his achievements, but the same can't be said of his fans. [...] Tacit acceptance of silencing and of abuse of power runs throughout our culture, but that doesn't make it okay in the specific instance of tech culture. [... >>]

Leaving Toxic Open Source Communities, by Anonymous Author | Model View Culture
When the senior developer wouldn't respect a technical decision I had made, I was first politely firm, then more insistent, and finally loud and angry. The developer then told me, a woman developer, that I was being "too emotional." Talk about double standards! When I got that email, it was the last in a long series of run-ins with sexist developers in my community. I couldn't work in this community anymore without the threat of harassment. I was done. Fed up. So I voted with my feet, and I decided to leave. [...] I was a minority in tech, someone that others looked up to as a leader in open source. And the stereotype threat was causing me to re-think leaving my toxic community. I finally accepted I had to leave my community in order to protect my mental health. With that decision, my emotions started to come back in a very painful way. Every emotion was powerful, raw, and uncontrollable. I was guilty about letting my community down. ...

The female Pinterest engineer who pressed tech giants to air embarrassing diversity numbers - San Francisco Business Times

"Pinterest was the first place where I felt like an engineer," said Chou. "It's hard to explain or articulate. When I came here, I was treated as an equal." Sometimes the discrimination is not subtle, like the time when a male engineer at a computer language conference asked her, "What do you do? Photocopy s---?" One major fact that advocates say must be addressed is that far fewer young women than men are learning computer science while in school. // http://www.codedoc.co/directors-thoughts/

The Dispute Between Radical Feminism and Transgenderism
AND here the critique http://bit.ly/1tXlqLW & http://bit.ly/1ujpPJ9 // http://bit.ly/V1UxtS // http://bit.ly/1orNN4F // "In failing to provide a semblance of balance to the voices in the piece, this account becomes hopelessly skewed, and becomes little more than a radical feminist propaganda piece. Early on in her essay, Goldberg presents an extremely simplified and stereotyped view of trans women’s identities. She writes: “Trans women say that they are women because they feel female — that, as some put it, they have women’s brains in men’s bodies.” First, considering that the length of the article discusses trans people (and focuses heavily on trans women), to reduce the explanation of their complex experiences to three words — “they feel female” — is offensively reductionist. While such a passing nod to trans experiences might be not be out of place in a more LGBTQ-geared publication, in a more general consumption magazine[.]" + http://bit.ly/VkWUIA + http://huff.to/1Bo9aJr

Psychologie Heute-Shop - Greiner:Schamverlust Schamverlust 9783498025243

Memo to my daughter: “Keep your eye on the ball and hit hard” | PandoDaily
What I love about Abramson’s [...] she’s named it, she’s owned it, but she doesn’t make herself a victim. The Future of Pando | Ugly.
The fact is, I’m getting a total pass for something I have repeatedly said was my responsibility, while my female business partner is receiving the full blame. It seems to me that either the person or persons spreading the smears about Pando has decided that a female employer is deserving of abuse and scorn in a way that a male boss isn’t, or they’ve cynically concluded that a female boss presents a much easier target for an Internet hate campaign. [...] In the past 72 hours, I’ve come to truly realize what female founders and CEOs in our industry deal with every day of their lives. That it took me this long to understand is another of my many failings. The ugliness has to stop. [ It is easier, faster to bash the weaker sex. especially if the women on top is not apologetic. it seems. men + anonymity of internet and the non-attachment, non-face-to-face situation, feel the urge to say stuff like X, about Sarah Lacy and the other week about Marissa Mayer, who overslept. ]
