A New Documentary About African Refugees Was Filmed by a Refugee as He Fled to Europe | VICE | United States
[ real voice of the people are missing ] // Siebert and Wagner had a hunch. By giving a refugee a camera and finally letting the life of migrants be documented by migrants themselves, they would get a different perspective on life on Mount Gurugu. The result is the remarkable Les Sauteurs (Those Who Jump), which had its world premiere at the Forum section of the Berlin Film Festival, and will screen in North America at the True/False Festival in Columbia, Missouri, in March.

British people think their media is the most biased and right-wing in Europe - and they're probably right | Voices | The Independent
Just two individuals - Rupert Murdoch and Lord Rothermere - controlled a staggering 52.2 per cent of online and print national news publications in the UK in 2013 [...] All of these newspapers either backed the Conservatives or Ukip in the most recent election and are all considered traditional right-wing publications. If you add up the readership of these right-wing newspapers, they account for a staggering 69 per cent of national newspaper readership in Britain in 2013. Left Foot Forward concluded their analysis by stating that “over three quarters (77.8 per cent) of the press is owned by a handful of billionaires.”

Draft snooper's charter 'fails on spying powers and privacy protections' | World news | The Guardian
Theresa May’s draft “snooper’s charter” bill fails to cover all the intrusive spying powers of the security agencies and lacks clarity in its privacy protections, a parliamentary committee has said. The intelligence and security committee said the draft legislation published by the home secretary suffered from a lack of sufficient time and preparation. It was evident that even those working on the legislation had not always been clear about what it was intended to achieve, it said.

Can we really trust judges to protect reporters' confidential sources? | Media | The Guardian
Journalists won’t even be safe to talk email whistleblowers from a coffee shop [...] In stressing that the powers would not be used for mass surveillance, May said the onus would be on the home office to show necessity and proportionality. And who would decide whether that was justified? Judicial commissioners, she said. They would operate a “double-lock” authorisation process on intercept and bulk interception warrants in order to prevent intrusive snooping. [ old boys club with career interests? titles, pensions? ] But will this judicial oversight provide enough protection? That’s the key worry for journalists who now know that there is nowhere for them to conceal their communications with confidential sources. Sports Direct is a reflection of the modern British economy | Letters | Business | The Guardian
Sports Direct seems to be a metaphor for the modern British economy. “The conscious strategy would seem to be to rely on cheap labour rather than costly investment,” as your editorial (11 December) says. It also illustrates the epidemic growth of workforce insecurity which plagues a nation scarred by the rise of the precariat. Britain is rapidly becoming the sweatshop of Europe, and this, along with bubbles in consumer debt and house prices, has been a major part in such anaemic recovery as we have seen over the past five years. Bloomberg EIC outlines editorial vision in wake of cuts | Poynter.
[In your clients interest.] After a day of layoffs that claimed dozens of journalists from the ranks of Bloomberg’s massive reporting and editing corps, Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait [ex-The Economist] called the departures a painful necessity intended on making the company stronger. [...] “Our purpose is to be the definitive ‘chronicle of capitalism’ – to capture everything that matters in global business and finance,” Micklethwait wrote.[...] "So if you are not intrigued by how people make money, or are inclined to sneer at those who are good at it, or yearn to practice “gotcha journalism” on investment bankers simply because they’ve chosen to be bankers, Bloomberg is probably the wrong place for you..." [...] The layoffs, which come after months of tumultuous relations between Bloomberg’s D.C. bureau and its New York office, have been read as a sign of decreasing editorial ambitions in Washington.

The New York Times Won’t Skimp on the Cost of Journalism — Even if That Means Selling Itself | Re/code
It’s that kind of expensive-to-produce, influential reporting that makes the Times the Times, and the family owners, the Ochs-Sulzbergers, know that better than anyone. If — and here’s the kernel if — the business ever diminished to the point that required significant cuts to its editorial staff, the family, led by publisher Arthur Sulzberger, would seriously consider a sale to preserve it, multiple sources say. Curtailing the talent would destroy the paper’s very reason for being, the thinking goes. [...] The board has “obstinately stuck with the idea of a really, really large-scale, properly invested-in newsroom,” CEO Mark Thompson said in a recent interview with Public Editor Margaret Sullivan, adding that “it would be self-defeating to change that.” [...] The family’s focus is not on arbitrary numbers but on maintaining the quality and editorial independence of The New York Times.” [...] the business is shrinking while the price of its journalism is rising.

Russia will fork Sailfish OS to shut out pesky Western spooks
Paranoia over NSA tampering spurs de-Westernisation drive // well only the Paranoid survive. [...] Russia’s Minister of Communications and Mass Media, Nikolai Nikiforov, has taken part in talks to form a consortium that will aid Russia in developing a custom mobile OS, reportedly a forked version of Jolla’s Sailfish OS, to lessen its dependence on Western technology. Nikiforov held a working meeting last week with the leadership of Hong Kong-based Sailfish Holdings, developer of the quietly admired Sailfish OS. Alongside other participants, the parties involved discussed the use of open-source software in the public and private sectors, taking into account technical, economic and political factors, the latter of which is expected to include United States’ interference with exported technologies.

// via bit.ly/1R6V2yA

BBC to cut more than 1,000 jobs - BBC News
bbc.in/1GQXVcJ - leaner simpler, delayering &! TV Licence shortfall - there will be calls to close iPlayer loophole // &! BBC director general Tony Hall has said he believes the licence fee has "got 10 years of life left in it". However the director general dismissed the suggestion of replacing the charge with a subscription model to pay for the BBC's output. - bbc.in/1GBDRNz // &! The Guardian view on the licence fee: a time to rally round the BBC - The way to stop the Conservatives marginalising the corporation is to make them realise that an assault would spell political disaster - bit.ly/1JzeQ6F [...] What is pernicious about these objections, supposedly arising from principle, is that they frequently veil envy of the BBC from its business competitors, whether Rupert Murdoch or the Daily Mail. [ Tory chum in cahoots with crony capitalism again and out destroying public good, heritage, and service ] &! bit.ly/1NzUACO
