The Shazam Effect - The Atlantic
"“Because the most-popular songs now stay on the charts for months, the relative value of a hit has exploded. The top 1 percent of bands and solo artists now earn 77 percent of all revenue from recorded music, media researchers report. And even though the amount of digital music sold has surged, the 10 best-selling tracks command 82 percent more of the market than they did a decade ago. The advent of do-it-yourself artists in the digital age may have grown music’s long tail, but its fat head keeps getting fatter.”" &! http://www.theatlantic.com/video/index/382837/who-made-pop-music-so-repetitive-you-did/ &! http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/11/24/revenue-streams?currentPage=all &! http://www.katinkahesselink.net/his/influence-theosophy.html &! http://ma.tt/2014/11/science-of-hits/

Alibaba Is Investing Huge Sums in an Array of U.S. Tech Companies - NYTimes.com
But the recent investments aren’t just about size. Alibaba is also rubbing elbows in the sometimes insular world of Silicon Valley-funded start-ups, where a handful of plugged-in financiers can help the company spot the next breakout smartphone app or e-commerce trend before it hits the mainstream. “With investments like these, they get good products, they make a splash, and most importantly, they build connections and trust amongst the venture capitalists,” said Sameet Sinha, an Internet analyst with B. Riley & Company, a small investment firm.

Marketing Can No Longer Rely on the Funnel - Mark Bonchek , and Cara France - Harvard Business Review
We asked some of the leading marketers in the world — from companies like Google, Intuit, Sephora, SAP, Twitter, and Visa — to assess the relevance of the marketing funnel. What we found says as much about the future of business as it does about the future of marketing. [...] Consider all the members of the Nike+ running community who don’t own Nike products or the half million fans of Tesla’s Facebook page who don’t own a Tesla. Or consider companies where employees use their own devices or download their own software until IT purchases the enterprise version for the entire company. In today’s digital age, advocates aren’t necessarily customers. Marketers who think that advocacy comes after purchase are missing the new world of social influence. [...] [The solution is to shift the focus from the transaction to the relationship.] [Benefit when the] marketing is built right into the product. << Brand and Product awareness. [...] Products should be designed to market themselves.

It's Official: China Is The "Mystery" Daily Buyer Of Billions Of Euros | zero hedge
However, investors appear reluctant to go against China's vast economic resources.
China holds more than $3 trillion in foreign-exchange reserves, with an estimated 60% of those in dollars. Its strategy toward the beleaguered euro zone helps it accomplish two goals: expanding its global reach and satisfying the need to diversify its vast reserves.

"The market is inclined to sell the euro on rallies [whereas] China wants to buy it on dips," said Michael Woolfolk, senior currency strategist at BNY Mellon in New York. "It maintains the current range-bound conditions until we get clarification on the long-term outcome for Greece."

Schools Find Ayn Rand Cant Be Shrugged as Donors Build Courses - Bloomberg
Allison’s crusade to counter what he considers the anti- capitalist orthodoxy at universities has produced results -- and controversy. Some 60 schools, including at least four campuses of the University of North Carolina, began teaching Rand’s book after getting the foundation money. Faculty at several schools that have accepted Allison’s terms are protesting, saying donors shouldn’t have the power to set the curriculum to pursue their political agendas, Bloomberg Markets magazine reports in its June issue.

“It’s really a battle of ideas. If the ideas that made America great aren’t heard, then their influence will be destroyed.”

“Donors want something back, and in many cases they want a say-so in what’s happening,” Siegel says. “When their money isn’t used the way they want it to, they are unhappy.”
