Mystery of why arteries harden may have been solved, say scientists | Science | The Guardian
june 2019 by asterisk2a
That, they say, makes sense: ageing, high blood pressure, smoking and fatty plaques are risk factors for stiffening of the arteries, and are linked to damage to cells, or even their DNA.
Duer stressed that individuals should continue to avoid lifestyles habits that can contribute to artery stiffening, including smoking and poor diets. Shanahan agreed. “What we don’t know is whether it is going to work on people who have already got a lot of calcification,” she said. > reversal is know via whole-food plant-based diet.

Chemicals used to make non-stick pots and pans, stain-resistant carpets, and food packaging may contribute to high levels of obesity by disrupting the body’s ability to burn calories, scientists say.
Researchers at Harvard University examined the effects of compounds called perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), which have already raised concerns among some health experts after animal experiments and other studies linked them to cancer, high cholesterol and immune problems.

Acid reflux drug linked to more than doubled risk of stomach cancer – study | Science | The Guardian
november 2017 by asterisk2a
[instead of changing diet - you give pills ] The study concluded no firm cause and effect could be drawn, but doctors should “exercise caution when prescribing long-term PPIs … even after successful eradication of H plyori”.
Responding to the study, Stephen Evans, professor of pharmacoepidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said: “Many observational studies have found adverse effects associated with PPIs.
“The most plausible explanation for the totality of evidence on this is that those who are given PPIs, and especially those who continue on them long-term, tend to be sicker in a variety of ways than those for whom they are not prescribed.”

How your blood may predict your future health | Inequality | The Guardian
october 2017 by asterisk2a
New research into bloodstream ‘biomarkers’ aims to unlock the full impact of social status on people’s lifetime health outcomes. The key is exposure to stress - quantitated self. making decisions on your own when presented w data? in case of the weight scale, never worked. why will it now? its just more medicalisation - door open for big pharma so people pop pills. vs inconvenience of changing diet lifestyle and learning something new like cooking and meditation. // &! Deprivation and Poverty Stress: The analysis suggested people in lower socioeconomic groups have a demonstrably longer exposure to chronic inflammation – with all its knock-on impacts on long-term health – even once the team corrected for the “usual suspects” of health inequality, including diet and smoking. The cost of treating ill health caused by obesity around the world will top $1.2tn every year from 2025 unless more is done to check the rapidly worsening epidemic, according to new expert estimates. Obesity and smoking are the two main drivers behind the soaring numbers of cancers, heart attacks, strokes and diabetes worldwide, grouped together officially as non-communicable diseases. Currently 39 per cent of the working age population in Scotland has at least one long-term condition, but that is forecast to surge as the population ages and Scotland grapples with the fallout of an obesity epidemic.

Type 2 diabetes rise in children 'disturbing' - BBC News
august 2017 by asterisk2a
More than 600 children and teenagers are being treated for type 2 diabetes in England and Wales, and the rise in cases is a "hugely disturbing trend", local councils are warning.
The figures come from a report by child health experts which found 110 more cases among under-19s in 2015-16 than two years previously.
The youngest children affected are aged between five and nine.
Council leaders said urgent action on childhood obesity was needed.
The Local Government Association, which represents councils in England and Wales, added that government cuts to public health budgets had affected their ability to tackle the issue.

Scottish food watchdog wants 'revolution' on food sales - BBC News
june 2017 by asterisk2a
Food Standards Scotland (FSS) said Scottish obesity levels, currently 30%, were projected to rise to 40% by 2030. [...] "It is clear that a combination of measures will be needed overall to enable healthier eating. Regulation of promotions of high fat, salt and/or sugar food and drink within retail stores and out of home premises should be taken forward as a priority." [...] Previous research by FSS indicated about 50% of less healthy food choices are purchased on promotions. For healthier foods, the figure is about 30%.

Obese women more likely to have babies with serious birth defects, says study | Society | The Guardian

While the additional risk was small for women who were just above the healthy weight range, the progressive increase in risk made the researchers more confident that the link was causal.
Martin Neovius, an epidemiologist at the Karolinska Institute and the study’s senior author, said: “In terms of risk, it is better to be normal weight than overweight and much better to be normal weight than obese.”

Sell high calorie foods in plain packaging to beat obesity, says Brain Prize winner | Science | The Guardian
march 2017 by asterisk2a
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-39183178 Peter Dayan, Ray Dolan and Wolfram Schultz share €1m neuroscience prize for work unravelling the brain’s reward system Selling high calorie foods in plain packaging could help in the battle against obesity according to a leading researcher who has won a share of the most lucrative prize in neuroscience for his work on the brain’s reward system. The colourful wrapping and attractive advertising of calorie-rich foods encourage people to buy items that put them at risk of overeating and becoming obese in the future, said Wolfram Schultz, a professor of neuroscience at the University of Cambridge. “We should not advertise, propagate or encourage the unnecessary ingestion of calories,” [ ... dopamine is released in anticipation of a reward, not just consumption of reward, thus seeing comfort food packaging and buying it, releases dopamine = walking into today's supermarket is dopamine rush for some, a high, irresistible, can not stop themselves from buying them 50/50 sugar/fat combos! ]

Spotting the illness that can cause sudden blindness - BBC News
february 2017 by asterisk2a
But these are all classic signs of giant cell arteritis (GCA). It occurs when arteries in the head and neck become inflamed and giant cells accumulate in the artery walls.
One of the arteries commonly affected provides blood to the optic nerve, which transmits information from the retina to the brain. Blocking the nerve and starving it of blood can cause permanent blindness. [...] GCA tends to affect adults over 50 and is three times more common in women than in men. It's also seven times more common in white people than in black or Asian people.

Obese patients denied surgery in a third of areas in England
april 2016 by asterisk2a
A report by the Royal College of Surgeons found a third of local NHS health bosses in England put restrictions on access to surgery.
But it says this goes against official guidance and can prolong patient pain.
However, some local NHS groups criticised in the report say their polices are based on good evidence.
The Royal College of Surgeons has been increasingly alarmed about the rationing of surgery in the NHS in the tough financial climate.
Its report is based on freedom of information returns from nearly all of the 209 clinical commissioning groups in England and all seven health boards in Wales.
While some CCGs have voluntary policies in place, where patients are encouraged to stop smoking or lose weight, others have introduced mandatory policies, which means patients have to meet fixed criteria before surgery. NHS in £2.4bn funding boost for GP services in England
april 2016 by asterisk2a
NHS chiefs in England have announced a five-year plan to help GP surgeries "get back on their feet" and to improve access for patients. The rescue package will see an extra £2.4bn a year ploughed into services by 2020 - a rise of 14% once inflation is taken into account. It will pay for 5,000 more GPs and extra staff to boost practices. [...] It means more than 10% of health spending will go on GP care - up from just over 8% currently.

Obesity 'likely culprit' behind womb cancer rise
april 2016 by asterisk2a
Rising levels of obesity may be fuelling an increase in the number of women diagnosed with womb cancer, the charity Cancer Research UK warns.
Its figures show around 19 in every 100,000 women in the UK were diagnosed with the disease in the 1990s - climbing to 29 in 100,000 in 2013.
Researchers acknowledge the science behind how extra weight is linked to cancer is not clear - but say hormones produced by extra fat may play a part.
They say more studies are needed.

Sugar tax: How bold is it?
march 2016 by asterisk2a
[Gov still wants to carry out a consultation = Watered down by Food Lobby ] But the more important question is whether this will have an impact on child obesity rates. One in 10 children start primary school obese. By the end, one in five are obese. If you add in those who are overweight, it's one in three. [...] our diets are simply not good enough. [...] Food Foundation produced a model of a typical family's diet. [...] consumed too much sugar and saturated fat and too little fibre, fruit, vegetables and oily fish. [...] However, this should not be seen in isolation. The government is expected to publish its much delayed child obesity strategy in the summer. That could include restrictions on advertising and marketing, as well as a sustained campaign to reduce the sugar content of foods and drinks across the board.

Woman 'too young' to get womb cancer is now infertile and going through the menopause at just 26
march 2016 by asterisk2a
Rates of the disease have risen by a quarter in the last decade and there are now 8,700 new cases a year in the UK.
But the risk of developing the illness is a third higher in women who have never had children.
This is because they are more exposed during their lives to the hormone oestrogen, which may trigger tumour growth.

Exercise 'not key to obesity fight', say scientists - BBC News
march 2016 by asterisk2a
[ Food Politics of "a balanced diet and everything in moderation ] Exercise does little to tackle obesity, according to a group of doctors and sports scientists. Writing in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, three international experts say it is time to ''bust the myth'' that people can eat what they want as long as they are active. They accuse the food industry of misleading the public, and sabotaging public health campaigns. //&! Britons in denial about obesity, new research finds - bbc.in/1RPPqpJ - New research suggests that despite high levels of obesity, four out of five of people in the UK consider themselves to be healthy. Figures from the World Health Organisation suggest nearly two thirds of people in the UK are in fact overweight. //&! The cost of being unhealthy - BBC News
march 2016 by asterisk2a
In fact, it is often overlooked in the continuing debate about the pressures on the NHS that getting people to live healthier lives is critical to the future of the NHS. In October, NHS chiefs made an unprecedented plea to ministers - they asked for more money. But it wasn't a "something for nothing" request. They set out a compelling case about how the health service was facing a £30bn shortfall by 2020 - and said if the budget was increased by £8bn in real terms they would do the rest.

Middle-aged 'risk unhealthy retirement' - BBC News
march 2016 by asterisk2a
Public Health England's One You campaign is urging the over 40s to drink less, exercise more, eat better and give up smoking. It is the first national campaign to specifically target this group. Currently more than two-fifths of those aged 45 to 64 are living with an illness or disability in England. The campaign will warn those in middle-age that unless they change their ways they could die early or face a retirement blighted with ill-health. While overall life expectancy has been rising in recent decades, the years people spend in good health has changed little. But research has shown that living healthy in middle age can double an individual's chances of being healthy at 70. [...] 40% of deaths are related to lifestyle //&! Lena Dunham to have surgery after ovarian cyst rupture - BBC Newsbeat
march 2016 by asterisk2a
endometriosis. // http://nutritionfacts.org/?s=endometriosis - ovarian cyst - PCOS //&! Wikipedia - "It has been proposed that endometriosis results from a series of multiple hits within target genes, in a mechanism similar to the development of cancer. In this case, the initial mutation may be either somatic or heritable." //&! http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Endometriosis/Pages/Introduction.aspx //&! https://www.endometriosis-uk.org/causes-endometriosis - Many women with endometriosis appear to have reduced immunity to other conditions. It is not known whether this contributes to endometriosis or whether it is as a result of endometriosis. // is it more common in western world than Africa (non-westernised) and Japan (non-westernised)? Thus environmental, ie diet.!?
