UK's 'cruel and harmful policies' lack regard for child hunger, says NGO | Society | The Guardian
'Broken' care system for most vulnerable
Patients with mental health problems, autism and learning disabilities are being let down by a "broken" care system, a report warns.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) says it knows of at least 62 adults and children that have been living in segregation in mental health hospitals for long periods of time.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock, who commissioned the work, said he was appalled by the distressing stories.

He promised cases would be reviewed.

The CQC found some of the wards were not suitable environments for people with autism and many staff lacked the necessary training and skills to work with patients with complex needs and challenging behaviour.

Amber Rudd’s denial of the benefits crisis takes political spin to a new level | Frances Ryan | Opinion | The Guardian
The facade did not last long. On the eve of the Brexit vote, the DWP snuck out a change to pension credits that could see couples on universal credit lose as much as £7,000 a year.
Benefits rule changes could cost pensioners in UK thousands a year
From 15 May, new pensioners with partners under 65 can no longer claim pension credit - https://www.theguardian.com/society/2019/jan/15/benefit-rule-changes-could-cost-pensioners-in-uk-thousands-a-year-pension-credit new pensioners whose partners are younger than the state retirement age of 65 can no longer claim a means-tested top-up called pension credit.

Instead they will be forced to claim the much less generous universal credit alongside their younger partners.

The couple rate of universal credit is £114.81 a week compared with £255.25 for a couple receiving pension credit. This amounts to a potential loss of £7,320 a year.

&! There is perhaps no greater skewer to this narrative than the fact some MPs have called for the introduction of a minister for hunger. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2019/jan/10/appoint-minister-for-hunger-to-tackle-uk-food-insecurity-mps-urge

Prof. Gary L. Francione on the Problem with Welfare Reforms and Single-Issue Campaigns - YouTube
Free Range and Co. - still promoting animal exploitation. Same with don't eat veal (eat the mom) or Foie gras (just eat the bird, don't force-feed the bird to eat the liver). << Single Issue Campaigns still promote animal exploitation. More morally better because you don't eat that kind of cruel meat? // Greenpeace doesn't promote Vegan. Just sustainability. Whole Foods "happy exploitation." << betrayal of animal rights! PETA gave Whole Foods an award for "best animal-friendly." [...] "lessen the suffering." // when its about human rights we take an absolute position. but animal rights public takes no absolute position but talks about meatless Monday's. If it's wrong its wrong. If it violates fundamental human rights, it violates human rights. There are not baby steps. No journey. // Educate people about Veganism. And animal rights will take care of itself. But current Vegan movement is just about "humane" or "compassionate" animal exploitation. Vegan has to be a moral imperative!
