economic history - "state spending inherently unproductive." // borrowing is deferred taxation - David Richardo - Rational expectations. Market economy always tended full employment. // Theory and Facts did not align. Keynes realised it post-war. Private investment is inherently volatile, ie slump conditions. state to offset underinvestment of private sector and match their retreat. getting rid of abnormal unemployment. done through monetary expansion (QE) and put onto state balance sheet available to spend. // Where 2009 forward QE got to banks ... // Paul Krugman - Confidence Fairy. // "Look after employment, and the budget will look after itself." but today it's the bond holders confidence who shapes budgets. // Keynes 'it is the long-term confidence of businesses that shape investment, confidence in state to no let a slump happen again.' but austerity, out of ammo talk, political-, social environment/sentiment & Osborne's '2016 will be tough year' speech were counter-productive.

Paris climate summit: UN negotiations 'need redesign' - BBC News
[ only bottom up works ... till the tide is big enough. same with health and fitness (which in part has to be about looking good/fit). self-esteem. ] The UN climate negotiations are heading for failure and need a major redesign if they are to succeed, scientists say. The pledges that individual countries are offering ahead of the Paris climate summit in December are too entrenched in self interest instead of being focussed on a common goal. The researchers say the science of cooperation is being ignored. Instead, they say the negotiations should focus on a common commitment on the global price of carbon. This means countries would agree on a uniform charge for carbon pollution, a scheme that would encourage polluters to reduce their emissions. The comments from researchers at the University of Cambridge, UK, University of Maryland, US, and University of Cologne, in Germany, are published in the journal Nature. //&! bbc.in/1jYOUtz

WHO | A call for higher taxes on tobacco
Dr Margaret Chan and Mike Bloomberg call for higher taxes on tobacco. The evidence is clear: raising tobacco taxes cuts usage, encourages smokers to quit and discourages young people from picking up the habit in the first place. The United Nations ought to encourage countries to raise tobacco taxes to support the world’s Sustainable Development Goals and reduce tobacco use.

How can plastic bag addiction be cured? - BBC News
From Monday large shops in England will charge 5p for each plastic bag. But how did shoppers get so used to free carrier bags in the first place, asks Chris Stokel-Walker. //&! bit.ly/1RgOTfj - Perhaps the crisis of conscience has eased and people have got used to the idea of their wastefulness again. The charge is clearly needed. But will it work? And does it go far enough? Not food multinational conglomerates owned by a handful shareholders! Theyre not interested in ur health or the nations exploding health care spending. Bumper payouts for housebuilding executives as market booms | Business | The Guardian
Two of Britain’s largest housebuilders, Berkeley Group and Persimmon, could hand out about £1bn to their top executives and managers in pay and bonuses over the next six years, boosted by strong UK house prices and government-subsidies for home-buyers. [...] Meanwhile, executives at Persimmon, the UK’s largest housebuilder, also have a Berkeley-style incentive scheme that is one of the most generous to be found at a London stock market-listed firm. Twitter works just fine – but for investors, anything except total market domination is a disaster | Comment is free | The Guardian
Nothing better illustrates capitalism’s addiction to illogic than the mismatch between Twitter’s workability and its unpopularity with Wall Street [...] Any company that cannot demonstrate a clear route to monopolising its space, monetising its users’ data on a vast scale, is to be discarded, targeted for acquisition, consigned to perpetual dowdiness. [...] When I’ve pointed to Wikipedia, Apache or Linux as harbingers of a new, non-market, open source economics, one of the stock responses is: “now show us something more spectacular.” The problem is, these modest, functional and free products are already in their own way spectacular. Wikipedia is the biggest information product in the world; Apache runs half the world’s web servers; and Linux is the system of choice for at least a third of all servers (the computers that run businesses) and 97% of the world’s supercomputers.

Edible Education 101: Michael Pollan (2015) - YouTube
'production and consumption (of what types of food) is the key to most things that is on our mind as society - climate change, health & well being, income, food, - are all related.' // livestock farming is 2nd biggest contributor to CO2 emissions (global warming), what we put in our mouths and whether we are active or sedentary determines our happiness, well being and health and in what way we grow old (sick and kept alive) or actually enjoying your old age. // food industry has no shared economic interest and is not a stakeholder because it is a rootless corporate conglomerate that evades taxation and lobbies for subsidies and also thus evades possible prosecution when wrongdoing/negligence is clear, oversight and transparency - exploits unsustainable - money (or stored value in fiat 'container') doesnt have 2 deal with ecological/environmental disaster & economic damage &! personal identity social status = meat consumption! + marketing + peer pressure

As well as subsidize fruit & vegetable prices. & a national years long multi-media campaign & PE@School ] The big decisions on financing the NHS over the next few years are likely to come in the autumn with the departmental spending review. Beyond a restatement of the commitment to an extra £8 billion in 2020 [...] detailed analysis of the financial needs of the NHS in England is underway. Department of Health and Treasury officials are poring over projections for health demand. They need to be sure that the £8 billion identified by NHS chiefs is realistic. That figure was reached after assuming highly ambitious efficiency savings of £22 billion by 2020. Ministers want to be assured that figure is achievable.

BIS Slams "Market Euphoria", Finds "Puzzling Disconnect" Between Economy And Market | Zero Hedge
"... it is hard to avoid the sense of a puzzling disconnect between the markets’ buoyancy and underlying economic developments globally....  Despite the euphoria in financial markets, investment remains weak. Instead of adding to productive capacity, large firms prefer to buy back shares or engage in mergers and acquisitions.   As history reminds us, there is little appetite for taking the long-term view. Few are ready to curb financial booms that make everyone feel illusively richer.  Or to hold back on quick fixes for output slowdowns, even if such measures threaten to add fuel to unsustainable financial booms. Or to address balance sheet problems head-on during a bust when seemingly easier policies are on offer. The temptation to go for shortcuts is simply too strong, even if these shortcuts lead nowhere in the end. [...] " Never before have central banks tried to push so hard."

Why Elon Musk Just Opened Up All of Tesla's Patents : The New Yorker
It’s a risky move but a shrewd one. It’s one that wouldn’t make a lot of sense for a lot of companies. But it does for Tesla. The company’s stock has doubled in the past year, but the industry is struggling. Musk’s biggest electic-car-entrepreneur-frenemy, Shai Agassi, led his company, Better Place, into bankruptcy a year ago. It’s a good moment for the industry to get a jolt. “Putting in long hours for a corporation is hard,” Musk said on Thursday during a conference call. “Putting in long hours for a cause is easy.” What exactly is that cause? It’s bringing clean cars to the people, of course. But it’s also, it seems now, showing the world a new way to think about innovation. || +++ http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/06/17/teslas-elon-musk-on-making-electric-car-patents-public-were-really-all-in-the-same-ship/ >> // Industrial Policy - 1% and increasing incrementally on gas guzzling cars. + emissions tax on consumer driving a gas guzzeler.

BBC News - Queen's Speech: Good deeds 'to be backed by law'
Extra legal protection is to be given to people carrying out good deeds, volunteering or planning local events who end up being involved in liability claims, the government has announced. Those thinking of doing something to help others should not be put off by the risk of being sued, ministers said. Under the new law for England and Wales, judges will be urged to show leniency in cases that get to court. Net Neutrality and the Idea of America : The New Yorker
In “The Frontier in American History,” the historian Frederick Jackson Turner argued that it was frontiers that created the essential aspects of American democracy. Life on the frontier, he wrote, was what developed “the courageous determination to break new paths” and “indifference to the dogma that because an institution or a condition exists, it must remain.” The debate over net neutrality, by this reckoning, is a classic debate over the closing of a frontier. The fear is that industrial consolidation, as it has before, will diminish opportunities for the new, idealistic, and optimistic, leaving behind the established, tested, and cynical. It would be the lapse into plutocracy that Turner and others feared.

FCC approves plan to consider paid priority on Internet
The proposal is not a final rule, but the vote on Thursday is a significant step forward on a controversial idea that has invited fierce opposition from consumer advocates, Silicon Valley heavyweights, and Democratic lawmakers. ▶ Michael Sandel: Why we shouldn't trust markets with our civic life - YouTube
n the past three decades, says Michael Sandel, the US has drifted from a market economy to a market society; it's fair to say that an American's experience of shared civic life depends on how much money they have. (Three key examples: access to education, access to justice, political influence.) In a talk and audience discussion, Sandel asks us to think honestly on this question: In our current democracy, is too much for sale?
