Inequality driving 'deaths of despair' - BBC News
there is income inequality
there is health inequality (air)
there is political inequality, your voice only heard when you have money to donate and can pay lobbyists.
>> electoral reform (1), limit lobby influence and party donations (2), citizens assembly, devolution might have failed.

Widening inequalities in pay, health and opportunities in the UK are undermining trust in democracy, says an Institute for Fiscal Studies report. [...] The think tank warns of runaway incomes for high earners but rises in "deaths of despair", such as from addiction and suicide, among the poorest.

It warns of risks to "centre-ground" politics from stagnating pay and divides in health and education.

The report says such widening gaps are "making a mockery of democracy".

The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), one of the country's leading research institutes, is launching what it says is the UK's biggest analysis of inequality.

That will be chaired by Nobel Prize-winning economist Prof Sir Angus Deaton.

Foreign-owned firms up to three times more productive than UK-backed rivals
The ONS said it cannot tell from this data whether the companies are more productive because they have foreign owners, or whether it is simply that foreign investors buy into businesses that are already highly productive.
The gap is smaller - but still substantial - in agricultural, construction, manufacturing and production businesses. Small firms with foreign owners are just over twice as productive as those with British shareholders, while mid-sized firms create 85.7pc more output per hour worked if they have foreign investors.
The study of 2016 data showed a strong link in most industries, although the correlation was less marked in construction.

End austerity – and kickstart Martin Luther King’s revolution of values | Richard Kozul-Wright | Opinion | The Guardian
Hyperglobalisation has concentrated massive wealth in a few hands, boosting the cult of materialism that the great civil rights campaigner warned us about // Byung-Chul Han // The real threat now is to the underlying trust, cohesion and sense of fairness that markets depend upon in order to function effectively. Against this, insisting that “there is no alternative” is yesterday’s political slogan. People everywhere desire much the same thing: a decent job, a secure home, a safe environment, a better future for their children and a government that listens and responds to their concerns. They want a different deal from that offered by hyperglobalisation. Prosperity for all cannot be delivered by austerity-minded politicians, rent-seeking corporations and speculative bankers. What is urgently needed now is a global new deal. Three elements – recovery, regulation and redistribution – remain at the heart of any such deal. Book Richard Kozul-Wright is director of the globalisation and development strategies division in the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Its annual report, Beyond Austerity: Towards a Global New Deal, is published today

One essential ingredient of resistance, she suggests, is to retain a belief in telling and understanding complex stories, keeping faith with narrative.

Donald Trump, Marine Le Pen: Wie Wirtschaftskrisen Populisten helfen - Kolumne - SPIEGEL ONLINE

More than politics, Theresa May’s true strength is her grasp of British culture | Rafael Behr | Opinion | The Guardian
While John Major and Tony Blair struggle with their Brexit defeat, the prime minister has read the national mood and is successfully navigating it // SHE IS NAVIGATING IT? OTHERS WOULD SAY like Blair SHE SITS THERE AS PASSENGER. // Culture and identity tend to be treated as peripheral expressions of whatever is happening in the economy, which is sometimes true but not always. May understands that. She is a more astute culture warrior than economist, and for now that is serving her well. // HAPPY TO DO HARD BREXIT EVEN IF IT HURTS THE ECONOMY "make the best of it" // To win power from New Labour, Cameron adapted to Blairish mode: self-consciously modern, socially liberal, metropolitan and relaxed about Europe. [...] There was always something absurd about “anti-establishment” language in the plummy tones of Boris Johnson or Nigel Farage. But their campaign did capture a rebellious spirit. Partly it was generalised frustration at the state of everything; partly it was counter-revolution – the backlash by people who sensed that their lives, interests and anxieties were the punchline to a joke at a fancy London dinner party. [...] liberals haven’t grasped the scale of their defeat. That is good for May, who navigates through the middle.

1,160 Bridgend Ford job cuts projected in leaked report - BBC News
Overtime
The American car giant currently manufactures 655,000 engines in Bridgend but the contracts for these are coming to an end and there is only guaranteed work for 125,000 in future.
The leaked document said the plant is underperforming in comparison to similar sites, including at Dagenham in Essex.
Overtime levels at Bridgend are more than double Dagenham's rates, which adds 6% to the cost of the engines produced.
It attributes this to absence, non-performance and work practices including paying staff allowances they are not entitled to and regular job rotation.
The document adds that finding future work for Bridgend will be subject to improvements in performance.

The new robot revolution will take the boss's job, not the gardener's | Business | The Guardian
Advances in artificial intelligence mean a second wave of change is approaching – and it is not the low-paid service sector where jobs are most at risk // Studies have shown that technological change rather than trade has been responsible for the vast majority of the jobs lost in manufacturing in the developed world. Making Britain Great Again by Niall Ferguson - YouTube
Brexit is a misnomer. it is not about British, Brexit is about the English! And Scotland failed to amend the outcome. What matters is age in turnout. The problem of granny voting out. GENERATIONAL CONFLICT in 21st century. And general inequality. Sovereignty was smth for alt-right people (authoritarian liking correlation). [...] and most importantly, IT IS NOT THE ECONOMY ANY MORE, STUPID (identity over pay day). At least for half of it. See also Donald Trump. LIES IN POLITICS HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE POWERFULL THAN 2016 - Brexit and Trump. DailyMail about EEA's. Immigrants take no jobs from "English." Immigration has contributed to growth (GDP). + WILL BE LONGEST DIVORCE. = HIT TO ECON WILL BE AS HARSH AS PREDICTED! HARD BREXIT MIGHT EVEN BE UNDERESTIMATED. [...] Populism (multiculturalism, social liberalism, immigration, environmentalism, feminism, globalisation, capitalism/corporatism) vs Cosmopolitism & Econ Left vs Econ Right [...] Brexit campaign was succesulf as in that leave voters dont think didnt think economically, it would make much of a difference. The more you were for Brexit, the less economics mattered. THIS DIVORCE WIL COST WAY MORE THAN ANYONE COULD HAVE THOUGHT ... and longer. Not 2 years. The clearest example is competition from foreign workers, which really has slammed the American working class. Economists David Autor, David Dorn, and Gordon Hanson did very careful empirical work and found that competition from China lowered wages and increased unemployment for American workers who were in competition with Chinese imports. Economists Michael Elsby, Bart Hobijn, and Aysegul Sahin found that competition from developing countries—not the decline of unions or the rise of automation—has been responsible for the bulk of the recent decline in labor’s share of income in the United States.

When robots take jobs, workers deserve compensation
In a recent FT blog post, the economist Gavyn Davies concluded economics urgently needed to catch up with that runaway politics. “How to compensate the losers from globalisation will be the big story in macro in 2017,” he wrote.

Some economists argue the simplest and most radical solution would be to provide all citizens with a universal basic income, a guaranteed state handout paid to everyone, irrespective of work, wealth, or social contribution.

Oh for the 1960s! People earned less but could afford more | Money | The Guardian
[ fetish of GDP ] Economic growth since the 1960s has been real, but the link between growth and personal prosperity has broken down, probably since the 1990s. We can carry on pushing for increases in GDP, but it’s meaningless unless it translates into a recovery in living standards. If any government really wants to help the left-behinds, then cutting house prices and rents must be their first priority.

A hard truth for Leave voters: Brexit means big government
Britain has seen a renaissance in jobs since 2013, of that there is no doubt. But most of those extra jobs were among the self-employed or fell into categories that can only be described as insecure and low-paid. When companies finally took the plunge and advertised full-time jobs from 2014 onwards, around a third went to migrants. [...] It is this mostly older group of workers across the developed world, worried about their pay, pensions and conditions of employment, that want to slam the brakes on globalisation and reject the remedy proposed by big business: greater labour-market flexibility and only limited job protections. [ Globalisation as a great rebalancing of the world economy between the west and the rest (BRIC and co) ] [...] Only government can provide the cure, with a commitment to invest where the private sector cannot or will not go.

Up to 70% of people in developed countries 'have seen incomes stagnate' | Business | The Guardian
Research by the McKinsey Global Institute found that between 65% and 70% of people in 25 advanced countries saw no increase in their earnings between 2005 and 2014. The report found there had been a dramatic increase in the number of households affected by flat or falling incomes and that today’s younger generation was at risk of ending up poorer than their parents. Only 2% of households, 10 million people, lived through the period from 1993 to 2005 – a time of strong growth and falling unemployment – without seeing their incomes rise.

We have entered a new era of conflict, warns new book
In his new book, Irregular War (IB Tauris) , he reflects on Isis, al-Qaida, Boko Haram, Al Shabab, and the Taliban - all separate manifestations, he says, of a new non-state dynamic driving international conflict through asymmetric and hybrid warfare. But their significance is more fundamental. They are part of what Rogers calls “an historical shift towards revolts from the margins”. And such revolts are made more likely by “the widening global socio-economic divide and the onset of climate disruption”. [...] The causes of conflict are many and deep – economic, political, societal, environmental, demographic. [...] “the increasing marginalisation of the majority of the world’s people caused by the workings of the neo-liberal system of international economic activity” which concentrates most of the fruits of economic growth in the hands of a transglobal elite of some 1.5bn people.
