Base paired up: study suggests genetic formula to monogamy | Science | The Guardian
The work suggests evolution hit on the same biological trick to make certain species monogamous, by turning up the activity of some genes in their brains, and turning down the activity of others.

Essays reveal Stephen Hawking predicted race of 'superhumans' | Science | The Guardian
The scientist presented the possibility that genetic engineering could create a new species of superhuman that could destroy the rest of humanity. The essays, published in the Sunday Times, were written in preparation for a book that will be published on Tuesday.

“I am sure that during this century, people will discover how to modify both intelligence and instincts such as aggression,” he wrote.

“Laws will probably be passed against genetic engineering with humans. But some people won’t be able to resist the temptation to improve human characteristics, such as memory, resistance to disease and length of life.”

Internal 'clock' makes some people age faster and die younger – regardless of lifestyle | Science | The Guardian
Scientists have found the most definitive evidence yet that some people are destined to age quicker and die younger than others - regardless of their lifestyle.

The findings could explain the seemingly random and unfair way that death is sometimes dealt out, and raise the intriguing future possibility of being able to extend the natural human lifespan.

“You get people who are vegan, sleep 10 hours a day, have a low-stress job, and still end up dying young,” said Steve Horvath, a biostatistician who led the research at the University of California, Los Angeles. “We’ve shown some people have a faster innate ageing rate.”

Obese women more likely to have babies with serious birth defects, says study | Society | The Guardian
While the additional risk was small for women who were just above the healthy weight range, the progressive increase in risk made the researchers more confident that the link was causal.

Martin Neovius, an epidemiologist at the Karolinska Institute and the study’s senior author, said: “In terms of risk, it is better to be normal weight than overweight and much better to be normal weight than obese.”

Mutant sperm-factories spread in testes - BBC News
But the University of Oxford study showed mutant spermatogonia gain a "tumour-like" competitive edge, leading to a greater proportion of sperm becoming defective. Experts said couples should consider having children earlier in life. A range of diseases including autism and schizophrenia are more likely with older dads due to mutations in their sperm. And the risk of very serious health problems goes from around four in every 200 births to five in every 200 once the father passes the age of 50.

Scientists get 'gene editing' go-ahead - BBC News
UK scientists have been given the go-ahead by the fertility regulator to genetically modify human embryos. It is the first time a country has considered the DNA-altering technique in embryos and approved it. The research will take place at the Francis Crick Institute in London and aims to provide a deeper understanding of the earliest moments of human life. It will be illegal for the scientists to implant the modified embryos into a woman. But the field is attracting controversy over concerns it is opening the door to designer - or GM - babies.

Hawking: Humans at risk of lethal 'own goal' - BBC News
Humanity is at risk from a series of dangers of our own making, according to Prof Stephen Hawking. Nuclear war, global warming and genetically-engineered viruses are among the scenarios which he singles out. And he says that further progress in science and technology will create "new ways things can go wrong". Prof Hawking is giving this year's BBC Reith Lectures, which explore research into black holes, and his warning came in answer to audience questions. He says that assuming humanity eventually establishes colonies on other worlds, it will be able to survive. "Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next thousand or ten thousand years. [...] But he also said that future generations of researchers should be aware of how scientific and technological progress is changing the world, and to help the wider public understand it. //&! bit.ly/1RwS7yA

Paris climate summit: UN negotiations 'need redesign' - BBC News
[ only bottom up works ... till the tide is big enough. same with health and fitness (which in part has to be about looking good/fit). self-esteem. ] The UN climate negotiations are heading for failure and need a major redesign if they are to succeed, scientists say. The pledges that individual countries are offering ahead of the Paris climate summit in December are too entrenched in self interest instead of being focussed on a common goal. The researchers say the science of cooperation is being ignored. Instead, they say the negotiations should focus on a common commitment on the global price of carbon. This means countries would agree on a uniform charge for carbon pollution, a scheme that would encourage polluters to reduce their emissions. The comments from researchers at the University of Cambridge, UK, University of Maryland, US, and University of Cologne, in Germany, are published in the journal Nature. //&! bbc.in/1jYOUtz

The more you pursue happiness, the faster it runs from you | Zach Stafford | Comment is free | The Guardian
Psychologist Iris Mauss at the University of California, Berkley found that the pursuit of happiness might just leave you worse off. “Wanting to be happy can make you less happy,” said Mauss in an interview with livescience.com. “If you explicitly and purposely focus on happiness, that appears to have a self-defeating quality.” [...] In her studies, participants who were not happy would begin blaming themselves for feeling sad. They thought it was an immediate flag for their failure, making these negative feelings even more counter-productive. The people who accepted these negative feelings as normal, however, were much happier in the long run. So, accepting your sadness could actually make you feel good. [...] For Darwin, emotions were very much tied to surviving, which requires more than just happiness. [...] Be open about how you’re feeling, don’t try to hide behind it or conceal it. // &! keeping a diary talking to and about yourself compassionately.

The finding: people who spent more time on Facebook were more depressed than those who didn’t. “A volunteer’s sex had no influence on these findings; nor did the size of his (or her) social network, his stated motivation for using Facebook, his level of loneliness or depression or his self-esteem,” the Economist said in its report. “[Study organizers] Dr Kross and Dr Verduyn therefore conclude that, rather than enhancing well-being, Facebook undermines it.” ( source http://pando.com/2014/06/17/facebooks-slingshot-brings-some-authenticity-to-the-worlds-most-disingenuous-social-network/ )

>> Low-Fat (No Oil) Vegan Diet <<

Nutrigenomics approach elucidates health-promoting effects of high vegetable intake in lean and obese men - Online First - Springer
Epigenetic approach to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of the beneficial effects of an increased vegetable intake reveals that there is a direct effect on the genes that modulate the NFkB regulated inflammation in the adipose tissue. The scientists observed these effects in lean as well as obese subjects who consumed either 50- or 200-g vegetables during a 4-week diet period. In how far the 40% calorie reduction may have influenced the results is yet something the study at hand cannot answer.

Life experiences put their stamp on the next generation: New insights from epigenetics
"Transgenerational Epigenetic Effects on Brain Functions" the trans-generational transmission of changes in the regulation of gene expression. In contrast, the epigenetic reactions to specific environments are designed to enable that organism to cope with that context. When these traits are passed to the next generation, it is as if the newborn arrives prepared for that specific environment. Problems arise when the epigenetic processes give rise to traits that are not adaptive for the offspring, such as heightened stress reactivity, or when the environment has changed.

UCI Releases Armstrong Data In Attempt To Refute Ashenden's Doping Claims | Cyclingnews.com
The UCI has reacted to Michael Ashenden’s assertion that he had not seen Lance Armstrong’s blood profile during his time on the Biological Passport panel by revealing previously unpublished material pointing to the contrary. The UCI has stated that Ashenden, who quit the passport panel last year, studied Armstrong’s anonymous data before the 2009 Giro d’Italia, and reported the profile as ‘normal’. However Ashenden, who claimed not to have seen Armstrong’s data, has always asserted that the American doped during the Tour de France, a period in which it’s unclear whether his data was studied by Ashenden. > the whole thing points towards UCI, which did (or did not) collude with LA doping practices. biological passport controls were and is in the hands of the UCI - that has to change. has to be handed over to independent anti-doping agency like WADA > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biological_passport >> needs to be introduces at all levels. See Myostatin Blocker - China research.

Exercise Can Be Good For The Heart, And Maybe For Sperm, Too : Shots - Health News : NPR
A study finds that guys who watched a lot of TV had lower sperm counts than more active fellows. The effect held true even when other factors, such as body weight and diet, were taken into account. Sedentary Lifestyle affects epigenetic. Switching certain genes off. Like a Change of diet from unhealthy to healthy (ie vegan) switches lots of genes on that fight chronic diseases and cancer.

Why Fathers Really Matter - NYTimes.com
Doctors have been telling men for years that smoking, drinking and recreational drugs can lower the quality of their sperm. What doctors should probably add is that the health of unborn children can be affected by what and how much men eat; the toxins they absorb; the traumas they endure; their poverty or powerlessness; and their age at the time of conception. In other words, what a man needs to know is that his life experience leaves biological traces on his children. Even more astonishingly, those children may pass those traces along to their children.

[...] Genes matter, and culture matters, and how fathers behave matters, too.

**A certain lifestyle and environment switches on/off certain genes and functions - point in time information - that gets carried on to the baby.**

[...] Our genes can be switched on or off by three environmental factors, among other things: what we ingest (food, drink, air, toxins); what we experience (stress, trauma); and how long we live.

Trio of sisters have breasts AND wombs removed to avoid cancer that killed their mother at 32 | Mail Online
BRCA1 and BRCA2 are genes that belong to a class known as tumour suppressors.

In normal cells, BRCA1 and BRCA2 help ensure the stability of the cell’s DNA and help prevent uncontrolled cell growth.
However, women who inherit a mutated form of these genes are at far greater risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer at a young age.
Harmful BRCA1 mutations may also increase a woman’s risk of developing cervical, uterine, pancreatic, and colon cancer.
Harmful BRCA2 mutations may also increase the risk of pancreatic cancer, stomach cancer, gallbladder and bile duct cancer, and melanoma.
Men who carry the BRCA1 gene have a greater risk of breast cancer and possibly pancreatic and prostate cancer. However, this is more likely among men with the BRCA2 gene.

Counsyl Brings Genetic Screening to the Masses - NYTimes.com
Now, a Silicon Valley start-up is making the bold claim that it can help eradicate that disease and more than 100 others by alerting parents-to-be who have the carrier genes.

The company, Counsyl, is selling a test that it says can tell couples whether they are at risk of having children with a range of inherited diseases, including cystic fibrosis, Tay-Sachs, spinal muscular atrophy, sickle cell disease and Pompe disease (the one afflicting the children in the movie).
