IFS: Growth in UK living standards worst in 60 years | Business | The Guardian
march 2017 by asterisk2a
The Institute for Financial Studies is predicting that households will be almost 20% worse off by 2021 - IFS calculations show that average household incomes will be 18% lower in 2021-22 than could have been reasonably expected before the financial crisis in 2007-08 - “One of the biggest drivers of the rise in child poverty is policy choices, which is why it is essential that the prime minister and chancellor use the upcoming budget to put in place measures to stop this happening. An excellent start would be to ensure families can keep more of their earnings under the universal credit.”

UK faces return to inequality of Thatcher years, says report | Business | The Guardian
february 2017 by asterisk2a
Pressure on the government to help struggling Britons has intensified after a leading thinktank warned that falling living standards for the poor threatened the biggest rise in inequality since Margaret Thatcher was prime minister.
The Resolution Foundation said Theresa May would need to make good on her pledge to support “just about managing” households as it released a report showing that rising inflation and an end to recent strong jobs growth would hit the least well-off hardest.

Inside Story - What's the future of the UK in the wake of Brexit? - YouTube
june 2016 by asterisk2a
Felt left behind! proxy protest vote. Dog whistle racism/xenophobia. World of post-fact politics and post-fact campaigning! Still a protest vote vs the elite and establishment always promised Disneyland. Reclaiming democracy at home, from bureaucracy, unelected officials, unaccountable ones, in Brussels. Young voters; 3 in 10 voted. Scewed the result somewhat. This is a warning to mainstream parties around the western world. Politics is being hollowed out, voters go to either extremes as alternative!

Is Stephen Crabb the man to tackle this age of extreme inequality?
april 2016 by asterisk2a
The Panama Papers will lead to the dynamiting of Tory credibility, but new work and pensions secretary, Stephen Crabb, is unlikely to prove the saviour of his party’s reputation. [...] Last autumn’s U-turn over cuts to working tax credits was a smoke screen. The axe will fall, only not everywhere, not just yet. From this week, existing universal credit claimants will lose up to £220 a month as the work allowance is pared back faster than the national living wage increases to replace it. [...] Short of taking a vow of poverty and retreating like Charles V to a monastery, there is nothing he can say now that will change the perception that he is at the head of a party that has a fundamental personal interest in preserving the advantages of the 1%.

Today the Powerwall and Supercharger network support the sale of Tesla cars. Tomorrow, we may see them feeding electric cars beyond Tesla: BMWs, Toyotas, Ubers, Chevy Bolts and others. Public Investment Payoff Not Necessarily About Efficiency

electrification of public rail - reduce emissions and improve public health (health hazard of diesel train engines proven - for passengers and residents). also improve public health - people ditching their cars! // 8:40 each additional public capital investment might be less valuable after the first road to the sea port. but that does not factor in types and public health and safety. road vs train. diesel train vs electric train. slow train vs faster electric magnetic safe low maintenance train w auto pilot (augmented intelligence). less public health risks, less health hazard, more public safety = less economic damage through a less sicker population (health care cost, health care demand, less work hours lost, higher productivity - healthy, happy people) but micro and macro economists do not put this into their GDP - well being, happiness, public health. // beijings hazardous hair will prove to be hughe economic cost (public health) down the road (chronic pulmonary conditions and cancer = lower productivity, lower discretionary spending because of spending goes to medicine and medical care and down the road leads to old age poverty for some if not the family).

march 2016 by asterisk2a
NICOLA Sturgeon has been warned against passing up a once-in-a-generation opportunity to revitalise the Scottish economy after she admitted she is “highly sceptical” about fracking. One of the country’s largest firms intervened after the First Minister revealed her personal view in a bid to counter claims that the SNP is preparing to give the controversial gas extraction method the green light after the Holyrood elections. Ineos, which owns the sprawling Grangemouth petrochemical plant and owns fracking exploration licences for large swathes of central Scotland, said it believed shale gas could become “another Scottish success story like the North Sea” and “pick up the slack” of declining offshore reserves.

Britain heading for power cuts next winter, say 60 local authorities | Business | The Guardian
february 2016 by asterisk2a
bit.ly/1TOwjhT &! A group representing 60 local authorities has warned that recent closures of large power stations have left Britain heading for power cuts next winter, despite assurances to the contrary from the government. [...] National Grid needed to act immediately to fill the supply gap by sending out new contracts for at least 2,500 megawatts (MW) of additional generating capacity – enough to power 2.5m homes. The alliance wants ministers to reconsider the level of carbon taxes, saying this is one of the key reasons why so many coal-fired power stations are being shut down early. [...] In recent years, coal, nuclear and gas-fired plants have been shut because of low prices, high operating costs or old age. Windfarms have been erected and new nuclear facilities promised but energy companies say gas plants cannot be built without higher subsidies. //&! bit.ly/1MpvhlE - UK doesn not meet 15% of EU renewables target, but cuts subsidies for renewables, duh! &! bit.ly/1sL8Kty

IEA warns consumers of spike in oil prices - BBC News
february 2016 by asterisk2a
[ Saudie's playing game of who has the deepest pockets against USA and Canada ] The International Energy Agency (IEA) is warning consumers not to let cheap oil lull them into a false sense of security amid forecasts of a price spike by 2021. In a report, the IEA said it expects prices to start recovering in 2017. But it forecasts that will be followed by a sharp jump in price as supply shrinks following under-investment by struggling producers.

Ms Figueres said she would not accept an extension of her appointment which finishes this summer. As executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, she played a key role in the talks that lead to the Paris Climate Agreement. Her contribution to the negotiation process was praised as "really extraordinary". Should Ofsted get a US boss? - BBC News
february 2016 by asterisk2a
In particular, they are considering candidates who have been involved in the charter school movement, state-funded independent schools, with a similar ideological DNA to academies and free schools in England. The big impact of charter schools has been in the most deprived urban areas, credited with re-energising schools that had been in a state of chronic decline. It's a claim rejected by their opponents, particularly in US teachers' unions, who say that the successful glitz and PR around charter schools is not backed up by any significant long-term advantage. Some charter schools do well, some do badly... like any other type of school, they argue. The current mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, has been accused by charter school groups of putting up "roadblocks" to their expansion. [...] [ PISA & a very mixed picture in USA ... and no co-operation, collaboration and trust. ]

Scientists: air pollution led to more than 5.5 million premature deaths in 2013 | Environment | The Guardian
february 2016 by asterisk2a
“Air pollution is the fourth-highest risk factor for death globally and by far the leading environmental risk factor for disease,” said Michael Brauer, a researcher from the University of British Columbia. Brauer said air pollution contributed to heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, bronchitis, emphysema and acute infections. He and his colleagues compared the problem in Asia to the conditions under centuries of industrial revolution in the US and Europe: massive economic growth smothered by clouds of toxic matter in the air. [... COAL ...] “Even in the most clean scenario in 2030,” Ma said, China’s growing and ageing population will still suffer 990,000 to 1.3 million deaths a year.

Obama climate initiative: Supreme Court calls halt - BBC News
february 2016 by asterisk2a
this is akin to taking plaster to fix a crumbling high rise: limiting the emissions and putting cost on emissions for one industry, seen as heavies polluter in public eye ... while livestock industry is biggest +50% of them all. // what is needed is a carbon tax that also includes environmental and ecological cost (ie deforestation, water pollution from pig waste - livestock farming) and if we are already there, what about antibiotic-resistance? A Marschall Plan for the future of earth and its occupants. A future for us. // If and import doesn't have a carbon tax, tariffs have to be enacted on imports based on their damage to environment, ecology and carbon emissions. ... // economic damage & public health problems and health inequality in the future is deferred taxation for the next generation // Obama isn't bold enough. Not Utopian enough.

PMQs: David Cameron urged to 'think again' on ESA cuts - BBC News
february 2016 by asterisk2a
[ we should help them get back to work ... 'by cutting their existence and add to worry, subsistence living and food and fuel poverty' ] Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn urged David Cameron to "think again" about cuts to employment and support allowance, warning that it will badly impact cancer patients and people with "severe" disabilities. Raising the topic at PMQs, Mr Corbyn said the government should not try to reverse its defeat in the House of Lords over the plans to cut the benefit by £30 a week. The PM said existing ESA claimants unable to work would not lose any money. "But in future, those who are able to get back to work, we should help them get back to work. That is what a compassionate country does," he added, and went on to attack Labour's health and economic policies in Wales and Scotland.

The lights are going out for solar energy
february 2016 by asterisk2a
Back in December, when most people were focussed on Christmas and not renewable subsidies, the government quietly published their decision to cut Feed-in Tariffs for industries such as solar, wind and hydropower by a staggering 65 per cent. Included in the small print was analysis which showed a possible 19,000 job losses, mostly in solar, which would see that industry shrink to under half its size. [...] Instead the government is thinking short-term, and our economy will suffer. For a party that wants people to think of it as economically competent, this is an incredibly bad move.

Hitachi boss issues warning over Wylfa subsidy deal - BBC News
february 2016 by asterisk2a
[ giving extortionate (for consumer) strike prices, while cutting renewable feed in tariff 95% and 500m subsidies for Oil/Aberdeen ] The head of the company behind a new £8bn nuclear power station on Anglesey has warned it may walk away from the project if a subsidy deal with the UK government cannot be reached. Hitachi chairman Hiroaki Nakanishi told the Telegraph he voiced concerns about Wylfa Newydd's expected cost to Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond. It followed problems a rival faced for the Hinkley Point plant in Somerset. The UK government said it wants low-cost nuclear power. Hitachi owns Horizon Nuclear Power which is behind the plans to build the new power plant, which could be operational by the early 2020s. Horizon is in talks with the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) on issues such as the strike price, which will be key to attracting additional finance.

Billionaire supports reported inquiry into possible ExxonMobil cover-up | Environment | The Guardian
january 2016 by asterisk2a
Activist Tom Steyer’s comments followed reports that California attorney general is looking into what the world’s biggest oil company knew about climate change. Billionaire environmental activist Tom Steyer spoke out on Wednesday in support of an unconfirmed investigation by California into allegations that ExxonMobil spent decades lying to investors and the public about its knowledge of climate change. “We don’t have the facts yet, but I think that there is enough that has been revealed that it’s totally appropriate that (California) be conducting this investigation,” Steyer told the Guardian. “Anybody who puts out intentionally misleading information I think should be answering to us.” Steyer’s comments came hours after the Los Angeles Times reported that California’s attorney general, Kamala Harris, is looking into what ExxonMobil, the world’s biggest oil company, knew about climate change going as far back as the early 1980s.

California state of emergency over methane leak - BBC News
january 2016 by asterisk2a
[ saving $ on maintenance by corporate ] the well now accounts for about a quarter of the state's total emissions of methane - an extremely potent greenhouse gas. The well is situated in a mountainous area more than a mile away from residential areas, but residents have complained of health effects like headaches, nausea, vomiting and trouble breathing. "Let's call it an environmental and public health catastrophe," Tim O'Connor, a lawyer with the Environmental Defense Fund, told the BBC's environment correspondent, Matt McGrath. "In terms of timelines this is going to surpass the gulf oil problem by a mile. What we do know is that that climate equivalent of this leak is like burning thus far almost 700 million gallons of gasoline or it's the same amount of pollution as 4.5 million cars put out every day, it's tragic." [...] The BBC's Matt McGrath says the large amounts of powerful gas that are leaking could have a significant impact on climate change. &! bit.ly/1mJNW5m

Warning: your festive meal could be more damaging than a long-haul flight | George Monbiot | Opinion | The Guardian
december 2015 by asterisk2a
http://www.theguardian.com/environment/meat-industry - A kilogramme of beef protein reared on a British hill farm can generate the equivalent of 643kg of carbon dioxide. A kilogramme of lamb protein produced in the same place can generate 749kg. One kilo of protein from either source, in other words, causes more greenhouse gas emissions than a passenger flying from London to New York. //&! http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/jun/23/eat-less-red-meat-and-cycle-more-for-your-and-the-planets-health // [...] I’m not suggesting that you eat no meat or other animal products. Privatisation of Green Investment Bank could 'damage its reputation' - BBC News
december 2015 by asterisk2a
The UK's "green" bank should not be privatised unless the government can ensure it keeps its environmental purposes, a committee of MPs has said. In June Business Secretary Sajid Javid announced plans to part-privatise Green Investment Bank (GIB). But the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee warned this could cause the bank to lose its "green identity". This could "damage its reputation" and "undermine its leadership role in the green economy", the committee said. [...] The bank's projects are required to make a contribution to one of the its five "green purposes": reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing the efficiency of the use of natural products, protecting the natural environment or biodiversity and promoting environmental sustainability. But the projects are also required to provide market-based commercial returns. [...] Environmental Audit Committee argued privatisation could encourage the bank to shift its focus towards more conventional projects

German plasma success raises nuclear fusion hopes - BBC News
december 2015 by asterisk2a
A German nuclear fusion experiment has produced a special super-hot gas which scientists hope will eventually lead to clean, cheap energy. [...] Physicists are in a worldwide race to create stable fusion devices that could not only mimic the Sun but release abundant energy, without the volumes of toxic waste generated by nuclear fission - the splitting of the atom. [...] The project began nine years ago and has cost 1bn euros (£720m; $1.1bn) so far. The EU's main nuclear fusion project is called Iter, at Cadarache, in the south of France. But it will not be fired up until the 2020s. It is controversial, having already cost more than €10bn. [...] Scientists have been working on nuclear fusion for more than 50 years but the extreme temperatures involved and the difficulty of controlling plasmas mean progress is slow.

Texas Fracking Zone Emits 90% More Methane Than EPA Estimated | twice as much as estimated by the Environmental Protection Agency's Greenhouse Gas Inventory, and 5.5 times the number from a separate global database. : science
december 2015 by asterisk2a
Texan here. I can say it is getting pretty noticeable in some parts. The I-20 between Pecos and Abilene reeks of gas now. I've lived in Texas for over 20 years and this is the worst it's been. At one point, I had to turn the air off in my car just so the stench would stop flowing in (even the air filter did little to help). But in a bit of uplifting news, Sweetwater, also on the I-20, has installed a ton of wind turbines. So it's good to see that the move the green energy is being made in the state.

Ignoring watersheds, ignoring climate change: flooded by our ignorance | George Monbiot | Comment is free | The Guardian
december 2015 by asterisk2a
Storm Desmond’s floods expose the utter madness of government policies, both in the hills and at the Paris talks. It’s as if it had come to remind us of what’s at stake. While the climate negotiations in Paris trudge their dreary road, Storm Desmond takes a great boot to our backsides. Yet still we fail to make the connection. The news records the spectacle and ignores the implications. //&! Wikileaks veröffenlicht Tisa-Dokumente: COP21 von Tisa ausgehöhlt - taz.de
december 2015 by asterisk2a

No mention of climate change in the TPP: Sierra Club report shows “dirty deal” means environmental disaster - Salon.com
december 2015 by asterisk2a
The Trans-Pacific Partnership will "fuel the climate crisis" warns the environmental organization in a new report [...] Environmental and labor organizations have warned for years that the TPP, which has been characterized as “NAFTA on steroids,” will mean disaster for the climate and for the economy. “A Dirty Deal: How the Trans-Pacific Partnership Threatens Our Climate,” the Sierra Club’s new report, details just how disastrous it could be. [...] The Sierra Club’s report finds that the TPP will do the following: “Empower fossil fuel corporations to challenge climate policies in private tribunals” [...] he deal will give foreign corporations the ability to sue governments for implementing environmental policies that do not meet companies’ “expectations” or that could make their investments less profitable.
