- immigration attacks existence and place in history ("we will not erase us")
- Trump exaggerating threats, heightens fear, and existencial threat (and felt place in history) thus strengthens grip onto ideology and world view 'I will not erased.'

Why Theresa May is a true heir to Richard Nixon | Aditya Chakrabortty | Opinion | The Guardian
Trump wasn’t playing politics: he was prosecuting a culture war – and a culture war is anti-politics. [...] First came her speech about how “the country is coming together”, even while her political opponents were not. Her cheerleaders were in the press the next day, baying for “Blue murder” and for her to “Crush the saboteurs”. I watched all this from the US; and in the land where Democrats are now routinely labelled “treasonous” it all sounded eerily familiar: us v them; the people v Westminster; leavers v remainers. [...] “forged a public language that promised mastery of the strange new angers, anxieties, and resentments wracking the nation”. [...] Nixon appealed to the “silent majority”. [...] “less about a traditional left-right battle and more about identity and values” [<< Rentnerrepublik]

Mia Ayliffe-Chung: Backpacker's mum slams Trump 'terror' claim - BBC News
The mother of a backpacker who was stabbed to death in Australia has criticised the White House for labelling her death a "terror attack".
Mia Ayliffe-Chung, 20, who was killed at a hostel in Queensland in August, did not die as a result of terrorism, police have said.
Despite this, her death was included on a list of 78 alleged "terror" attacks released by the Trump administration.
Rosie Ayliffe said Mia's death must not be used to persecute innocent people.
How the BBC covered Trump's list of 'under-reported' terror attacks
The White House released the list of attacks to back up Mr Trump's claim the media was "under-reporting" attacks committed or inspired by the Islamic State group.

The politics of anger | The Economist
When Margaret Thatcher was prime minister, amid the triumph of Soviet collapse, an aide slipped Mr Fukuyama’s essay on history into her papers. The next morning she declared herself unimpressed. For liberals today that must be the rallying cry. //&! https://soundcloud.com/theeconomist/tasting-menu-audio-highlights-from-the-july-2nd-2016-edition //&! https://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/the-politics-of-anger-by-dani-rodrik-2016-03?barrier=true - History never quite repeats itself, but its lessons are important nonetheless. If Your Argument Is Based on Economics, You’ve Already Lost
The Remain faction made a rhetorical mistake early on, and stuck by it. They appealed to economic efficiency. [...] For many, though, that argument clearly fell flat. It not only ignores history, social institutions, and heritage, it diminishes and often dismisses them. Arguments rooted in economic efficiency cannot trump (if you’ll pardon our using that term) appeals to emotion. ( via https://redd.it/4qe6cp )

Man removed from UK flight over 'prayer' message on phone | UK news | The Guardian
The Nigerian-born Christian believes the passenger next to him assumed he was a Muslim and jumped to the conclusion that he may be a terrorist. “That guy doesn’t know me and within two minutes he’s judging me,” he told the Guardian. “Even if I was a Muslim, it was pretty unfair the way I was treated. I don’t think anyone, irrespective of their religion should be treated in such a way. “If we keep on giving into this kind of bigotry and irrational fear, I dare say that the terrorists will have achieved their aim.” [...] But he now fears he is on a terrorist watchlist because when he returned the next day from his business trip, the electronic passport gate did not let him through and he had to speak to an immigration officer before proceeding. “Someone felt I was a terrorist because they saw the word ‘prayer’ on my phone and now I stand in uncertainty about my freedom of movement in and out of the United Kingdom,” he said.

[ public blackmail and scaremongering fearmongering ] The parents of the Conservative activist Elliott Johnson have been warned by the Tory thinktank where he used to work that their son’s mental health and sexuality would be aired in public if they insisted on broadening the scope of the inquest into his death. [...] George Alliott, the lawyer representing Conservative Way Forward (CWF), the thinktank where Elliott Johnson worked until he was made redundant a month before his death, told the hearing that if the scope of the inquest was broadened it would lead to further questions being asked about Elliott’s sexuality and wellbeing. Addressing the coroner, Tom Osborne, Alliott said: “If this scope is to widen, you are going to have to conclude that it will need to involve references to Elliott’s mental health records and his sexuality.” [ wasn't there just a high court decision that mental health records are not allowed in sexual assault/rape cases (ie to deface victim) ]

Mass EU migration into Britain is actually good news for UK economy | UK news | The Guardian
[ symptom! offer of Brexit vote was election move out of fear, UKIP gains ] Far from the unfounded headlines about EU migrants grabbing British jobs, record numbers of British citizens are in work too [...] the quarterly labour market survey – showed that record numbers of British citizens were in work too. Indeed, 1 million more Britons are in work and 850,000 more Europeans are working in Britain since David Cameron became prime minister. [...] Britain should not be seen as a sudden, recent mass invasion to be necessarily feared by every British worker. It is now a fact of life that Britain has been a country of net mass migration every year for the past 20 years. [...] European migrants are not a drain on Britain’s finances; what is more, they actually pay in more in taxes than they take out in state benefits. [...] [60%] are now university graduates [...] For eastern Europeans, 25% are graduates – similar to the proportion in the UK-born workforce. [ below Germany levels? ]

The Pentagon has fired the first shot in a new arms race | Mary Dejevsky | Opinion | The Guardian
In a speech in Washington last week, previewing his announcement, Ash Carter said he would ask for spending on US military forces in Europe to be quadrupled in the light of “Russian aggression”. The allocation for combating Islamic State, in contrast, is to be increased by 50%. The message is unambiguous: as viewed from the Pentagon, the threat from Russia has become more alarming, suddenly, even than the menace that is Isis. [...] In the last months of his presidency, this detachment is ending. The additional funds for Europe’s defence are earmarked for new bases and weapons stores in Poland and the Baltic states. A day in court showed me the misery of Britain’s housing policy | Polly Toynbee | Opinion | The Guardian
The housing crisis they inherited has worsened as rents rise, but David Cameron and George Osborne’s cuts to social housing are a bizarre response: the housing and planning bill going through parliament marks the end of the social housing era. Not by accident but by deliberate policy, 88,000 council homes to rent will be lost, says the Conservative-controlled Local Government Association. Labour says the total will be 180,000 by 2020. Money is sucked out of social housing into the Treasury, as the 1% rent cut saves on the housing benefit bill by stealing funds due to pay for new social homes. Half of all renters get some housing benefit, with the continuous rise in rents. Cutting that support simply propels more into homelessness.

Unendlich fade. Aber irgendwie rührend.

The EU referendum, Project Fear Mark II, and the thorny path the SNP must tread backing Europe (From Herald Scotland)
[ Brexit was put on table by tories in order to not lose more votes to UKIP. immigration/migration became a point in the manifesto because of the rise of the far-right in form of UKIP. a Fear based move. nothing principles. career politicians move. their own sleeze and propaganda, polarisation, fearmongering cought up to them. ] THE long-awaited Cabinet split over Europe finally happened last week. Chris Grayling, the Tory Leader of the House, announced that it would be a “disaster” for Britain to stay in the European Union under present terms. But the earth didn't exactly stop spinning. So far, none of the “big beasts” of the UK Cabinet – London Mayor Boris Johnson, Home Secretary Teresa May, or the former Education Secretary Michael Gove – have shown much eagerness to join. One suspects they don’t want to back a loser. David Cameron isn't purring yet, but he is certainly looking very self-satisfied.

The UK must invest in mental health help | Letters | Society | The Guardian
the cost of mental ill health in England has been estimated to be £105bn per year. Fortunately, a number of evidence-based psychological therapies exist and are effective. Investment in psychological therapies to date has been a success, but it is a success that could be multiplied. The improving access to psychological therapies programme is only funded to reach “at least 15%” of the people who need it, and retention and recovery rates could be improved. [...] &! Osborne said that the ILF was “such an important fund … that we will be able to include it in the budgets going forwards”. Reality is not living up to the rhetoric. [ 7-day NHS? ]

Civil servants will be banned from helping Brexit ministers, Cameron says - Politics live | Politics | The Guardian
He put Brexit on the table because it was popular and feared to lose votes to UKIP. Opportunist. Career Politician. Needs a script. And now is changing the script in order not to lose the plot. The public voting yes. // David Cameron has made it clear that civil servants will not be allowed to help ministers who want to make the case for Britain leaving the European Union. He set this out in a letter listing four rules that will apply to ministers who want to campaign for Brexit. [...] [ and makes clear what his cabinet and peers can vote on ] Ministers will only be free to dissent on the issue of staying in the EU or leaving. [...] Ministers who speak from the frontbench will be expected to support government policy. But “we need to be flexible and apply common sense”, Cameron said. [...] This implies that Outist ministers will not be allowed to make the case for leaving the EU from the Despatch Box. [ Meaning his Brexit-Op is a dickless stunt. ]

[ Tories, nasty party at it again; spin and positioning - to use something to put someone or something in a bad light. distract. smoking gun and mirrors. avoid. change direction and tone of discussion or debate. ] Now questions are being raised about political interference, Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron calling it an attempt to “politicise the Paris terror attack” and the “lowest politics” he’d seen in years. Keogh and the Department of Health say that it was “entirely appropriate” that they communicate with each other and co-ordinate a response. Communication is generally a very good thing, co-ordination, in this case, not so much. Indeed, some might say that this is desperate stuff, an overt attempt to stir up public fear and animosity towards striking medics.

New year, old grievances: why Britain’s bugbears in 2016 look very familiar | Martin Boon | Opinion | The Guardian
A new survey of what’s on our minds reveals a nation still obsessed with the same things as in the 1960s - inequality and immigration [...] Seven out of 10 suggest that inequality and immigration create the biggest societal divides of today [ but tories take on what is easiest, immigration. but not inequality ] So nothing’s changed, and it’s likely not much will – at least, not if you’re a member of our world-weary public, exasperated with the collective failure of political solutions to modern-day grievances.

Donald Trump and Isis both benefit from a powerful fuel: our fear | Arie W Kruglanski | Opinion | The Guardian
The Republican presidential frontrunner and Islamic State both know how to exploit the fear and uncertainty so prevalent today and skillfully cultivate it [...] All these factors jolt people out of their comfort zones and foster existential anxieties that spawn yearnings for order and predictability. They privilege simplistic concepts that lack nuance and lend significant edge to leaders who talk tough and offer what psychologists call “closure”.

Prospect of TTIP already undermining EU food standards, say campaigners | Business | The Guardian
Opponents of Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership say EU negotiator has admitted to approving entry of banned goods [...] EU negotiators will resume controversial trade talks with the US on Monday amid claims that multinational companies have jumped the gun in advance of any agreement to import goods that are currently banned – including genetically modified crops and chemically washed beef – into European markets. A campaign group says that a report in a US journal concerning the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) talks show that Europe is already capitulating to huge pressure from the US to allow imports of previously banned goods before an agreement is reached. [...] [ as always its about] lower trade barriers and boost growth. [ Trade Deals like TTIP & TPP are better for US economically than a military invasion. who is excluded? BRIC. Keep trying till you get it right - figured it out. THE LEARNING CURVE! failure is steepest learning curve (entrepreneurship). Thus everyone needs to be exposed to failure and adopt a growth mindset as child. With each failure you get closed to your goal, in case you dont stop & dont make the same mistake twice! // Dream when you are awake. Do it. Say yes to life & opportunities.

Telling British tourists to flee Tunisia rewards terrorism | Simon Jenkins | Comment is free | The Guardian
The security hysteria of politicians such as Philip Hammond, our foreign secretary, is the only thing that poses an ‘existential threat’ to Britain [...] ritain has imposed economic sanctions on Tunisia. These are in retaliation for that country’s failure to prevent what the prime minister calls an “existential threat to Britain” from so-called Islamic State terrorists. The head of London’s police, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe, declared earlier this week that the Tunisia killings meant it was “highly likely” that there “could” be a terrorist attack on London. These responses are outrageous. They play directly into the hands of terrorists, awarding them added glory in their own eyes for their original attack and offering similar publicity to other lunatics eager for martyrdom. &! bit.ly/1IPXSCt &! bit.ly/1eObyBS

// Book Lars Geiges, Stine Marg, Franz Walter: Pegida. Die schmutzige Seite der Zivilgesellschaft?

How to identify a mediocre VC: They speak in stupid absolutes | PandoDaily
// dont walk, talk & do business in absolutes. things change as you go along & you have 2 amend given advice to ur current situation 2 the best of ur ability & judgement. // (1) Only hire A players. (2) Hiring managers who can grow with ur company. [N]early impossible. Typically you have two choices: Hire someone who can manage the size company you have now and hope they scale, but know you’ll likely have to replace them OR hire someone your company can “grow into.” [ is also ben horowitz advise if I am not mistaken ] [...] Only two things kill startups: The founder gives up or it runs out of cash. [...] Shitty VCs can damage your company, but no money will likely kill it. [...] I challenge any entrepreneur to tell me they didnt make a single mistake in their first ten hires. [...] [absolutes] can stymie [entrepreneurs] into no action [always correct ur mistake ASAP when u notice it, no padding] [Accelerated learning] [Assembling the plane while flying w limited amount of fuel.]

Revealed: hitlist of welfare cuts facing Britain's next chancellor | Politics | The Guardian
No Representation; personal & corporate tax avoidance/evasion (criminal behaviour) & non-dom, as well as progressive tax code (just lowered last term to 45% for 150k.) Instead should be 50% as it was. As well as introducing a 55%/60% for 500k/1m. // &! UK living standards fell for all but the richest under coalition – analysis - bit.ly/1Rc2PZg // &! bit.ly/1JU55Cm "when it comes to cuts there is no longer any “low-hanging fruit”. What’s left are in large part harsh cuts hitting middle-income working families" [...] Cameron spoke this morning of a “one nation” Toryism but he will know his £12bn of cuts will disproportionately hit the poor, young sick and disabled. The cuts will deliver more pain, fear and instability to those they affect. [...] seriously dismantling the welfare state [Cameron and Tories] will know this carries a political cost. // &! bit.ly/1PwOhQg bit.ly/1GaA37k bit.ly/1Ij67FZ bit.ly/1FJecDL bit.ly/1IAKanv
