Half of GPs unaware of drug's use in cancer prevention – study | Society | The Guardian
A “worrying” number of family doctors are not offering at-risk patients a preventive breast cancer drug, a charity has said.

A study found that only half of GPs were aware the drug tamoxifen could be used to reduce the risk of breast cancer.

In 2013 the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) recommended that women deemed to be at moderate or high risk of breast cancer should be offered chemoprevention drugs including tamoxifen.

Obesity 'likely culprit' behind womb cancer rise
Rising levels of obesity may be fuelling an increase in the number of women diagnosed with womb cancer, the charity Cancer Research UK warns.
Its figures show around 19 in every 100,000 women in the UK were diagnosed with the disease in the 1990s - climbing to 29 in 100,000 in 2013.
Researchers acknowledge the science behind how extra weight is linked to cancer is not clear - but say hormones produced by extra fat may play a part.
They say more studies are needed.

Living in 'Cancerland' during breast cancer awareness month - BBC News
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, but one group of women with breast cancer isn't happy with the sea of pink. Cancerland is a group of women with breast cancer who are trying to speak openly and honestly about what it means to have the disease. Founder Champagne Joy also hosts a web series on the topic. The BBC spoke to several members of the group about how the difficult choices they've had to make after their diagnosis.

Part II: Is the Government fulfilling its role in the fight against cancer?
The scale of the challenge is apparent. I think we should be as bold and ambitious as possible: scientists, clinicians, patients, the general public and politicians all working together for a single goal: to eliminate cancer within a generation, and Britain at the forefront of this. [...] Patient experience has to be prioritised and this is difficult when NHS cancer services are under unprecedented pressure and the Government far too often provides contradictory messages. The Department of Health must provide the NHS with the resources and the long-term, holistic stability to allow Trusts to invest in state-of-the-art equipment. The NHS needs to emphasise prevention and early detection too, but the risk is that under greater financial and workforce pressure, cancer services will be forced to firefight.

Genetic clue to breast cancer relapses - BBC News
A research team from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Cambridge found that cancers that return were more likely to contain certain genes or combinations of genes. Targeting these genes with early treatments could be key, they said. The study is being presented at the European Cancer Congress in Vienna. In around one in five people with breast cancer, the disease will return - either to the same place as the original tumour or another part of the body.

BBC News - 'Half of UK people' will get cancer
One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives, analysis suggests. Cancer Research UK said this estimate, using a new calculation method, replaced a forecast of more than one in three people developing the disease. It said longer life expectancies meant more people would be affected. But it was not inevitable and improving lifestyle, such as losing weight and quitting smoking, could have a major impact, the charity added. The good news is cancer survival figures are also rising. &! Cancer diagnosis rate of 1,000 per day to 'push NHS to limit' The NHS will be "pushed to its limit" by the end of 2016 by rising numbers of cancer patients, a charity says. Look for Cancer, and Find It -
The concept of overtreatment is based on the belief that not all breast cancers are deadly. Some never progress, researchers suspect, and some progress so slowly that the patient will probably die of something else, particularly if she is older or has other health problems. But mammography can find all of these tumors, even those too small to feel. And doctors and patients rarely watch and wait — once a tumor is found, it is treated, because nobody knows how to tell the dangerous ones from those that could be safely left alone. “Everyone has an anecdote of a small spot on mammography year after year that was finally biopsied and turned out to be positive — invasive, low grade,” said Dr. Constance Lehman, a radiologist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and the director of breast imaging at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Really? The Claim: Eating Soy Increases the Risk of Breast Cancer -

Soy milk, tofu and other soy products contain phytoestrogens, chemicals that can mimic the behavior of the hormone estrogen. Because estrogen fuels many breast cancers, soy has long been a source of concern: Can it heighten the risk of breast cancer or raise the odds of recurrence?

In the lab, phytoestrogens can stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells. But in human studies, scientists have not found that diets high in soy increase breast cancer risk. In fact, most have found the reverse.

Despite concerns about its phytoestrogen content, eating soy has not been shown to promote breast cancer.

My personal educated take:: reduce refined and fake product (ie products mimicking meat made out of soy)

Estrogen Lowers Risk of Heart Attack and Breast Cancer in Some -
In a finding that challenges the conventional wisdom about the risks of some hormones used in menopause, a major government study has found that years after using estrogen-only therapy, certain women had a markedly reduced risk of breast cancer and heart attack.
The research, part of the landmark Women’s Health Initiative study, is likely to surprise women and their doctors, who for years have heard frightening news about the risks of hormone therapy. But most of those fears are related to the use of a combination of two hormones, estrogen and progestin, which are prescribed to relieve hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause, and have been shown to increase a woman’s risk of breast cancer.

The women with hysterectomies who used estrogen alone had a 23 percent lower risk for breast cancer compared with those who had taken a placebo. This is in stark contrast to the higher risk of breast cancer shown in the estrogen-progestin part of the trial.
