Global heatwave is symptom of early stage cycle of civilisational collapse

'Toxic garbage will be sold here': Outcry as Brazil moves to loosen pesticide laws | World news | The Guardian
“The economic interest will prevail over human and environmental health.”

Of 121 pesticides permitted in Brazil for coffee production, 30 are already banned in the European Union, including the toxic herbicide paraquat, Bombardi reported in an extensive 2017 study. [...] The country already lets foreign companies exploit its lower standards of protection, they said, “exporting hazardous pesticides prohibited from use in their domestic markets to be used in Brazil.”

Under Brazil’s current legislation, pesticides with elements considered teratogenic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, endocrine disruptive, or posing risks to the reproductive system can’t be registered, they said. But under the bill, hazardous pesticides will only be prohibited when there is a “scientifically established unacceptable risk” – a definition too vague to be effective.

Chemicals in packaging, carpets and non-stick pans 'may contribute to obesity' | Science | The Guardian
Chemicals used to make non-stick pots and pans, stain-resistant carpets, and food packaging may contribute to high levels of obesity by disrupting the body’s ability to burn calories, scientists say.

Researchers at Harvard University examined the effects of compounds called perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), which have already raised concerns among some health experts after animal experiments and other studies linked them to cancer, high cholesterol and immune problems.

A giant insect ecosystem is collapsing due to humans. It's a catastrophe | Environment | The Guardian
Today we know beyond doubt, and with scientific statistics rather than just anecdote, that this is true, and the question immediately arises: what caused it?

It seems indisputable: it is us. It is human activity – more specifically, three generations of industrialised farming with a vast tide of poisons pouring over the land year after year after year, since the end of the second world war. This is the true price of pesticide-based agriculture, which society has for so long blithely accepted.

Goulson said a likely explanation could be that the flying insects perish when they leave the nature reserves. “Farmland has very little to offer for any wild creature,” he said. “But exactly what is causing their death is open to debate. Assumed safety of widespread pesticide use is false, says top government scientist | Environment | The Guardian
“The effects of dosing whole landscapes with chemicals have been largely ignored by regulatory systems,” the scientists said. “This can and should be changed.” They contrast this situation with pharmaceuticals, for which there is a system of rigorous global monitoring after a drug is approved in case adverse effects emerge.

“Vigilance on the scale that is required for medicines does not exist to assess the effects of pesticides in the environment,” they said. They cite the UK as an example of one of the most developed regulatory systems: “Yet it has no systematic monitoring of pesticide residues in the environment. There is no consideration of safe pesticide limits at landscape scales.”

Plastic bottle litter on beaches up 43%, conservationists say
Conservationists say they found 160 plastic bottles for every mile of UK coastline cleaned last year.
The Marine Conservation Society said more than 8,000 bottles were picked up during its Great British Beach Clean Up in September, up 43% on 2014.
It wants deposit return schemes, which give money back to people who return empty bottles, to encourage recycling.
More than 6,000 volunteers collected and recorded litter along 340 beaches across the UK.
The MCS said putting a charge on the bottles of up to 20p, which gets refunded when they are returned, would change behaviour, and called for the UK government to explore the potential of such a scheme.

Rate of carbon emissions put in context
We are now putting carbon into the atmosphere at a rate unprecedented since at least the age of the dinosaurs, scientists say.
The researchers have examined ocean sediments laid down during the so-called Palaeocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum - a dramatic warming event some 56 million years ago.
They find the amount of CO2 going into the air at its onset was four billion tonnes a year at most.
Today's figure is 10 times as big. [...] But the team argues that the scale of human-produced carbon emissions means that the lessons we could learn from the ancient event may actually have limited relevance.
"We have effectively entered an era of a no-analogue state, which represents a fundamental challenge to constraining future climate projections," they write in their paper. [...] "The rate of change is as important as the magnitude of an event for determining particularly terrestrial ecosystem disruptions," &! bit.ly/1Uyfrgz

Ineos warns Scotland will pass up the chance of an economic lifeline if fracking is banned (From Herald Scotland)
NICOLA Sturgeon has been warned against passing up a once-in-a-generation opportunity to revitalise the Scottish economy after she admitted she is “highly sceptical” about fracking. One of the country’s largest firms intervened after the First Minister revealed her personal view in a bid to counter claims that the SNP is preparing to give the controversial gas extraction method the green light after the Holyrood elections. Ineos, which owns the sprawling Grangemouth petrochemical plant and owns fracking exploration licences for large swathes of central Scotland, said it believed shale gas could become “another Scottish success story like the North Sea” and “pick up the slack” of declining offshore reserves.

Climate stirring change beneath the waves - BBC News
Human-induced climate change is triggering changes beneath the waves that could have a long-term effect on marine food webs, a study suggests. An assessment of phytoplankton in the North Atlantic found the microscopic organisms' pole-ward shift was faster than previously reported. It observed that the ocean's tiny plant community was "poised for marked shift and shuffle". [...] "The main results of the study were that we found that when the climate changes it was not just the temperature that was changing and impacting phytoplankton but it was also all the ocean circulation and the conditions in the ocean surface, such as nutrients and light, that have an ecological impact," Dr Barton observed. "Generally, the whole physical environment is altered; in some cases, quite substantially."

Bolivia's second-largest lake dries up and may be gone forever, lost to climate change | World news | The Guardian
Lake Poopó was officially declared evaporated in December. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people have lost their livelihoods and gone. High on Bolivia’s semi-arid Andean plains at 3,700 metres (more than 12,000 feet) and long subject to climatic whims, the shallow saline lake has essentially dried up before only to rebound to twice the area of Los Angeles. But recovery may no longer be possible, scientists say. “This is a picture of the future of climate change,” says Dirk Hoffman, a German glaciologist who studies how rising temperatures from the burning of fossil fuels has accelerated glacial melting in Bolivia. Hawking: Humans at risk of lethal 'own goal' - BBC News
Humanity is at risk from a series of dangers of our own making, according to Prof Stephen Hawking. Nuclear war, global warming and genetically-engineered viruses are among the scenarios which he singles out. And he says that further progress in science and technology will create "new ways things can go wrong". Prof Hawking is giving this year's BBC Reith Lectures, which explore research into black holes, and his warning came in answer to audience questions. He says that assuming humanity eventually establishes colonies on other worlds, it will be able to survive. "Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next thousand or ten thousand years. [...] But he also said that future generations of researchers should be aware of how scientific and technological progress is changing the world, and to help the wider public understand it. //&! bit.ly/1RwS7yA

Meet the conservationists who believe that burning is good for wildlife | George Monbiot | Environment | The Guardian
Why is it that practices we recognise as destructive when we see them elsewhere in the world are judged “environmentally friendly” here? When we see land being burnt in Indonesia or Brazil, do we call it conservation, or do we call it destruction? Because it damages soil and hydrology, incinerates wildlife and simplifies ecosystems, destruction is the correct term. Burning on Dartmoor has the same impacts. It’s about as environmentally friendly as tipping bleach into a river. [...] I happen to believe that too much weight is given to sheep farming, and too little to wildlife. But where there are no tenants and no grazing, instead of using this as an opportunity for ecological restoration, the Exmoor authority is bringing in its own sheep to ensure that seedlings can’t grow and wildlife can’t recover. It’s utter madness.

California state of emergency over methane leak - BBC News
[ saving $ on maintenance by corporate ] the well now accounts for about a quarter of the state's total emissions of methane - an extremely potent greenhouse gas. The well is situated in a mountainous area more than a mile away from residential areas, but residents have complained of health effects like headaches, nausea, vomiting and trouble breathing. "Let's call it an environmental and public health catastrophe," Tim O'Connor, a lawyer with the Environmental Defense Fund, told the BBC's environment correspondent, Matt McGrath. "In terms of timelines this is going to surpass the gulf oil problem by a mile. What we do know is that that climate equivalent of this leak is like burning thus far almost 700 million gallons of gasoline or it's the same amount of pollution as 4.5 million cars put out every day, it's tragic." [...] The BBC's Matt McGrath says the large amounts of powerful gas that are leaking could have a significant impact on climate change. &! bit.ly/1mJNW5m

Storm Frank: What have we done to make the flooding worse? - BBC News
[Strom Eva, Desmond, Frank, ... building code has to be reviewed. new buildings have to be raised, first floor ~1m above ground. no basement. also, roofs have to resist gale winds easily ] Policy-makers are often keen to see brownfield land used for residential development, but these areas are often most vulnerable to flooding. Demand from buyers has fuelled this growth, too. You might assume that there would be huge drops in property prices after highly publicised floods. But in places like Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, and Cockermouth, Cumbria, which experienced heavy flooding in 2007 and 2009 respectively, prices have remained largely unaffected in the long run. [...] "We've tended to straighten rivers, to canalise them, to embank them and all that rushes the water down to the nearby urban pinch point," explains environmentalist and writer George Monbiot, adding that the flow of water should be slowed down and the rivers lengthened instead.

UK floods: Storm Frank threatens more misery - BBC News
A fresh storm threatens to bring more misery to parts of the UK, including areas already hit by severe flooding. Storm Frank is due to sweep in from Tuesday evening, with Cumbria and south and central Scotland at most risk. There are nine severe flood warnings - meaning "danger to life" - in England and Wales, mostly centred on York which was badly hit by flooding on Saturday. David Cameron has defended government spending on flood defences after the devastation across northern England. Floods minister Rory Stewart told the Today programme that the government was open to the idea of an external review being held. The Environment Agency said on Monday there would have to be a "complete rethink" of flood defences. December has seen communities in Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Yorkshire swamped by rising waters. Storm Frank poses a new threat in the wake of what Storm Eva brought over the Christmas weekend. [...] costs could exceed £1.5bn. [ Eva, Desmond, Frank ]

Warning: your festive meal could be more damaging than a long-haul flight | George Monbiot | Opinion | The Guardian

Texas Fracking Zone Emits 90% More Methane Than EPA Estimated | twice as much as estimated by the Environmental Protection Agency's Greenhouse Gas Inventory, and 5.5 times the number from a separate global database. : science
Texan here. I can say it is getting pretty noticeable in some parts. The I-20 between Pecos and Abilene reeks of gas now. I've lived in Texas for over 20 years and this is the worst it's been. At one point, I had to turn the air off in my car just so the stench would stop flowing in (even the air filter did little to help). But in a bit of uplifting news, Sweetwater, also on the I-20, has installed a ton of wind turbines. So it's good to see that the move the green energy is being made in the state.

Demnach hängen 5,2 Milliarden Kleidungsstücke in deutschen Schränken.

Land degradation costs the world up to $10.6tn a year, report says | Global development | The Guardian
More than half of the world’s arable land is moderately or severely degraded, according to a report published on Tuesday by the Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Initiative (pdf). The report estimates the cost of this environmental destruction, not only from lost agricultural production and diminished livelihoods, but also from the lost value of ecosystem services formerly provided by the land, including water filtration, erosion prevention, nutrient cycling and the provision of clean air. [...] “We should look at realigning the incentive structure that we have away from incentives that degrade the land to those that promote sustainable management,” [...] reduction in biodiversity, ecosystems, and ecosystem services.”

The Chemical in Cupcake Wrappers and Cookware Might Be Causing Cancer | Mother Jones
C8 is in a chemical family called PFCs (perfluorinated chemicals)—the same water- and stain-proofing class of chemicals used to make rain gear, pizza box and popcorn bag liners, stainproof upholstery treatments, and those waxy slips that hold pastries at cafes. Dozens of studies have linked PFCs to all sorts of health problems, from kidney and testicular cancer to increased risk of miscarriages. (3M phased out the chemical from production in 2002 due to potential health hazards.) [...] PFC contamination may not be isolated to the Ohio Valley. According to an Environmental Working Group (EWG) report that uses recent EPA data, C8 has been found in the drinking water in 94 counties serving more than 6 million Americans. (An interactive version of this map is available here.) [...] The EPA is in the process of investigating C8's health effects; in the meantime, it has set voluntary C8 safety standards to be used by utility companies. [...] avoid nonstick, stainproof, or waterproof items
