400 care home operators collapse in five years as cuts bite | Society | The Guardian
BDO’s research said care homes, already struggling with debts racked up before the credit crunch, had “suffered as a result of the reduced spending by central government”.

It warned that further pain lay ahead, highlighting research from the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services showing that councils had £700m of social care cuts planned in 2018-19, despite growing demand.

Agency tried to charge care homes £2,700 a shift for workers | Society | The Guardian
One of the country’s biggest providers of agency health workers has been accused of “profiteering” after trying to charge care homes up to £2,700 to supply a staff member for a single shift.

The Guardian can reveal that Newcross Healthcare, already exposed for fining workers £50 when they call in sick, quoted the sky-high charges in a price list sent out to homes looking for cover over Christmas.

Is the NHS's long-term plan workable? - BBC News
Bleak picture
Budgets for public health (including prevention) and training of nurses, doctors and other staff have not yet been set out and, if less generous than the NHS settlement, they could affect the ability of the service to deliver the long-term plan, in the view of the report authors.

And what of the short term? The watchdog paints a bleak picture.

The financial health of some trusts, it says, is getting worse.

Are Andrew Lansley's NHS reforms being binned? - BBC News
But Nigel Edwards, the influential chief executive of the Nuffield Trust think tank, believes a "significant unpicking" of Mr Lansley's reforms are on the cards and in time they will be judged as "one of the most major public policy failures" of all time.

If that is the case, it begs the question: why did the government go to all the trouble of pushing ahead with them in the first place?

New leadership, same old problems - BBC News
new money won't be seen till next year, new winter crisis is coming for sure, and the wait lists will get even longer. - Health think tanks argue that the 3.4% is really only enough to cope with rising demand, never mind improving care.

Hospital sources point out that the new money won't come to the NHS until next year.

Nothing extra so far has been allocated for this winter and the intense pressure seen in the first months of this year is likely to be repeated.

There is every chance that waiting lists for routine surgery will get longer and accident and emergency performance won't get better.

Even with the £6bn cash boost next year, there are warnings that there won't be any rapid improvement. His instincts will be to tell the service to get on with job with the money it has. But that conviction will be tested in the depths of winter if hospitals are struggling to cope. [...] Also plays with part-privatisation of Elderly Care - asking people to take out a private insurance ... or lose their home ...

Council cuts are putting the vulnerable at risk, Tory peer says | Society | The Guardian
WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER. - “We’ve reached a point where councils will no longer be able to support our residents as they expect, including our most vulnerable,” Porter added. As well as problems coping with demand for services for elderly and disabled adults, the LGA says councils are struggling with an explosion in the number of children in care, and a rising bill for 80,000 homeless families placed in temporary housing.

An LGA briefing on the prospects for local government states: “The failure to properly fund these services puts the wellbeing of some of the most vulnerable residents at risk, and this cannot go on.”

NHS failure is inevitable – and it will shock those responsible into action | Jan Filochowski | Opinion | The Guardian
When this happens, as it is now, pretty much across the board, things don’t get worse by 3% because demand has increased by 3%, they get worse by 50% or 100% because there is no slack left to deal with what is only a 3% increase. England and Wales death rate rise linked to longer stays in hospital | Society | The Guardian
The sharp rise in the death rate in recent years could be down to the number of people being kept too long in hospital, inadequate social care and austerity-linked pressures on the NHS, academics say.

About 7,800 extra deaths a year in England and Wales are being caused by the dramatic increase in the number of people being forced to stay in hospital longer than necessary because they cannot safely be discharged, it is claimed.

NHS slams big pharma in High Court row over drug pricing powers
The row is over powers introduced in April giving NHS England the right to ration costly medicines, including if they are expected to cost more than £20m in any of their first three years of use. Previously medicines signed off as clinically effective and good value for money by public drug price regulator Nice had to be automatically funded and made available by the NHS within three months. [...] The drugmakers argue the changes will limit patients’ access to cutting-edge treatments, particularly for rare diseases where the benefits are large but the patient numbers are small. In their claim the drug firms argue Nice acted beyond its powers to introduce the so-called budget impact test and failed to consult properly with industry on the detail of the proposals.

What will cost more than lifting the public sector pay cap? Not lifting it | Faiza Shaheen | Opinion | The Guardian
[finding efficiencies ... ] Let’s start with costs of recruitment and retention. This is a big one. Job advertising isn’t cheap and new recruits take time to settle in. Last year, a study found there had been a 61% rise in advertising spend since 2010 in secondary schools alone, costing £56m in 2015. Shortages in the health service mean NHS Trusts are paying millions every month to agency and bank nurses to ensure there are adequate levels of staff on wards.

Stress-related leave has also increased in the public sector as workers are understandably getting run down working in understaffed schools and hospital wards. This is just staff – what about the costs to our children of being in classes too big for them to maximise their learning or to a sick individual who has an operation delayed?

UN report attacks austerity budgets for growing inequality | Business | The Guardian
Austerity budgets adopted by governments across the world since the 2008 financial crash are to blame for undermining the job security of millions of workers and threatening the progress made by women in the workplace, according to a UN report. [...] The report argued that giving women access to decent employment could only be achieved if governments maintained investment in affordable childcare facilities and care for the elderly. When they make steep cuts in early-years education and healthcare provision they are effectively asking women to pick up the slack, it said.

Alzheimer’s surge adds to burden on NHS of ageing population - The Scotsman
This marks a rise of 33.4 per cent on the same period last year and more than double the 257 deaths that occurred in the same three months in 2014. A further 936 deaths in Scotland were a result of dementia, the figures showed, up 16.9 per cent over the year – although this was said in part to be due to changes in the cause of death coding software.

Overburdened NHS faces 'winter of woe', leading doctors warn | Society | The Guardian
A total of 181,692 bed days were lost in hospitals in England in July to “delayed transfers of care”, when patients are fit to leave but cannot be safely discharged. Prof Derek Alderson, the president of the Royal College of Surgeons, said hospitals’ ability to cope with the coming winter was at risk because so many beds were tied up with such patients. [...] A war of words between local councils and the NHS broke out on Thursday over who was to blame for the high number of patients trapped in hospital. [bc on both sides, money was not spend on care that was allocated but elsewhere to pluck holes] [...] It also emerged on Thursday that the number of written complaints about NHS services in England rose by 5% last year – with GPs a particular target of patients’ frustration.

Moray nurse warns that proposed changes could put lives at risk | Press and Journal
District nurses in NHS Grampian could come under management of GPs as part of changes to the organisation of community care being considered by health bosses.

The board believes the move, one of several options being considered, would result in a stronger link between patients and the GP responsible for their care.

Unions have held talks with management however after some staff raised fears it could lead to longer waits for patients receiving vital care due to piling the extra workload on already under-pressure doctors.

Care homes face 'huge shortfall' in available beds - BBC News
Up to 3,000 elderly people will not be able to get beds in UK care homes by the end of next year, research suggests.
Research commissioned by BBC Radio 4's You and Yours programme reveals a huge shortfall in the number of beds available.
Increasing demand from an ageing population could see that grow to more than 70,000 beds in nine years' time.
The Department of Health said local authorities in England had been given an extra £2bn to help fund social care.
But in the past three years one in 20 UK care home beds has closed, and research suggests not enough are being added to fill the gap.

Unpaid carers save economy almost £60bn each year - BBC News
The ONS links the rise in unpaid care by family members to "a rapidly ageing population and a higher life expectancy".
"At age 65 a man will spend, on average, 44% of the rest of his life in poorer health, and a woman, 47% of her life," says the ONS document.
Women are more likely than men to be informal carers, with women making up 59% of carers. [...] The value of unpaid care outweighs the amounts spent on formal social care, the document suggests.
