Scottish woman and French husband quit UK over Brexit | World news | The Guardian
A Scottish woman and her French scientist husband have decided to quit the UK because of Brexit after his application for permanent residency was rejected by the Home Office, despite him working in the country for more than 20 years.

Emma Pollet said the family had not taken the decision lightly, but were not confident their rights would be protected after Britain left the EU. [...] The permanent residency card was designed for non-EU citizens coming to the UK to live and is not required by law for any EU citizen living in the country.

However, in the absence of any guarantees from the government, many EU citizens have seen it as a route to establish their legal right to remain in the country post-Brexit.

Deported woman's family say Amber Rudd lacks compassion | UK news | The Guardian
Joanna Cherry QC MP said: “This case is another example of the inability of the Home Office to take account of special or compassionate circumstances when required and the human cost of the inflexibility of the UK’s immigration rules. This approach suggests relentless prioritising of the net migration target against a sensible and humane approach to individual cases.

“Following the recent outcome of the MM Case in the supreme court, concerning the particularly harsh spouse visa rules, this action in relation to Mrs Clennell further places the Home Office’s respect for family life under question.” Joanna Cherry QC MP said: “This case is another example of the inability of the Home Office to take account of special or compassionate circumstances when required and the human cost of the inflexibility of the UK’s immigration rules. Senior MPs accused of damaging UK with divisive rhetoric | Politics | The Guardian
Senior government ministers including Amber Rudd and Jeremy Hunt are damaging the UK’s standing in the world with their divisive rhetoric, the chair of the Commons Brexit committee, Hilary Benn, has said. [...] Indicating that such language could influence negotiations with the EU, Benn said making pronouncements about what the government would achieve from its discussions would harden attitudes towards the UK among European politicians and officials. [...] “When I reflect upon a certain week in Birmingham in the autumn, where people of a particular political party gathered and made speeches, I thought that was a disastrous week for Britain’s reputation in the world. Absolutely disastrous.

permanent residency rights after 5 years. // post-tory conference lots realise undertone of hate, xenophobia, brit first, ratio how many foreigners you can hire, ... similarities to 1930 Germany // One of Italy’s leading columnists, Gianni Riotta, said: “Some Italians saluted Brexit as a liberation from the heavy European saddle. Now they realise the nasty undertone poisoning Brexit. The lists of foreigners, the ethnic cleansing of doctors and nurses from British hospitals. They now worry. Many Italians work in the UK, to find a job Italy is not offering them.
